Reliablity is questionalble????!!!!!!
After the 3RD/ 31k miles service I noticed the engine light is on and I took it to the dealer, as per dealer diagnose result ' misfiring or cylinder misfiring'. I been following the manufacturer advice in terms of maintenance and using premium 91 gasoline. The adviser from the dealer(since the car is still under warranty, I took it to the dealer) blamed the ARCO premium 91 gasoline(verbally no written statement) and advised me to fix 'cylinder misfiring' which cost me $1,262. Which does not covered under manufacturer warranty. After 31k miles a major issue like this in the engine of VW I was shocked. I am wondering that's all VW can do in terms of manufacturing quality cars. In my experience the cars which are considered to be lower grade than VW are doing far better.....my last Honda Accord started giving major problems like this at 100,000 miles. ******************RIGHT NOW I REGRET MY PURCHASE OF VW TIGUAN*************************

Feels very premium and is fun to drive
I bought a 2014 Tiguan SEL 4motion and it is the best car I have owned to date. I have owned other crossovers such as the Nissan Rogue and the Mazda CX-5 and they cannot compare to my Tiguan. The Tiguan's engine is really quiet and smooth and works really well with the transmission. I leave the car in sport mode most of the time and acceleration is quick. The new upgraded Fender stereo is amazing. One of my biggest issues with my Mazda CX-5 that I traded in for this car was the terrible stereo. This stereo is truly a premium stereo with perfect surround sound. The inside of the car has a very premium feel, the seats are very comfortable with excellent lumbar support.

Quiet Comfort
Traded a Sportwagon TDI that I've had for 3 1/2 years due to poor accessibility and road noise, loved the mileage though. This vehicle achieved both with high marks. My trade offs were loss of fuel mileage (46 mpg) but achieved a basket full of other options and positive attributes that I think more than made up for the loss. The vehicle drives better than my sportwagon both in ride and cornering which was a surprise in the latter. The 4Motion is just flat out amazing compared to my two other current 4X4 vehicles, both Fords. The handling and breaking on snow and ice is far superior to both, F250 and Explorer. The back seating area is larger then the sportwagon but the overall cargo space is less. This was not important to as we have our rear seats down most of the time for our pooches, both large dogs.

Happy New Owner
I bought my 2014 Tiguan SE only about 10 days ago but first impressions overall are favorable. The car feels much bigger on the inside while driving it than it does from the outside. It is quiet, smooth, has plenty of power, and handles well. *Update* I drove the Tiguan for 3 years now and there isn't much I would change to my initial review. However, I will add that I have had zero problems with it. Around town it zips around and parks easily. On the slightly negative side it feels a little darty on the highway at speed. I think it's the short wheelbase and the higher seating position. At first it feels tippy but you eventually get used to it and realize it is actually quite stable. Ive watched youtube videos of them on a race track or dirt course and they don't tip over. Never heard of problems either in Germany and they drive them fast. Just be aware of that feeling I described when you test drive one. Your confidence in it will grow over time. Also, fuel economy is not the best. I probably average about 22mpg overall. Small price to pay for the peppy engine though. Better engine than any other reasonably priced small SUV on the market. This generation Tiguan is still built in Wolfsburg Germany and the build quality is excellent. Better than any of its domestic or Asian competitors in my opinion. The fit and finish, materials quality are a cut above. Also, it has a standard height adjustment for the passenger seat. This can be very important for shorter or taller people. No Asian small SUV has one.

Sporty high-end feel
I've had the Tiguan for about two months now and am happy with the purchase. Coming from a Camry, the taller height and tighter feel are welcomed. The build quality and cabin design are excellent, and the pickup is great, especially in Sport shift mode. I do find that the tighter feel can create a bumpy ride on rough roads. I don't have enough experience with other sporty cars to know if this is just what you get, or if it's unique to the VW. It's not enough to outweigh the pluses, but I notice it.
The Tiger that Guzzles
Updated Review after 10 months and 10k miles: My earlier review of this car remains unchanged. Its great at cruising speeds but horrible in city and stop & go traffic. The accelerator lag, the unsophisticated shifting of the transmission, and the fuel milage are still my strongest disappointments with this car. I'm surprised more owners are not complaining, since this model has been around since 2009. Here are few additional quarks: There are no USB ports. The cruise controls are on the blinker knob - not as convenient as on the steering wheel. It has an electronic parking brake that I rarely use because I'm nervous it will fail. The fuel door locking mechanism sticks and I need to pound on the door with my hand to release it - otherwise you can't open the fuel door! The first thing the info system does when it links to your phone is it starts playing the last song you were listening to in iTunes. And if you prefer listening to the radio, it requires you to push the radio button twice! Also it has 10 FM station presets but when using the station change button on the steering wheel, it selects the next station available station NOT the next PRESET station. On the plus side: I've had no drivetrain problems. It has a Siri type voice option that's convenient for making calls. And you can make and receive calls with the info system off. Unfortunately to me the stuff I don't like outweighs the stuff I do and I plan on selling it soon. If this car represents VW technology then I won't be considering them again. I bought this used Tiguan 8 weeks ago primarily as my commuter car - and for this purpose its been okay. The ride comfort, handling, visibility, and interior controls are great. It cruises nicely on the freeway; and with conservative driving I'm averaging around 30mpg, better then the advertised 26mpg. The engine is peppy when needed. So far no mechanical or electrical issues. But there are 2 things that have really disappointed me. From a standstill there is a brief lag (about 1 sec) between the time I step on the accelerator and the car reacts. And it happens often when shifting from 2nd to 3rd and from 3rd to 4th in slow moving traffic. Its produces a mini whiplash. Its incredibly annoying. My wife hates driving it. I took it to a dealer to ask if there was an adjustment or program tweak that could eliminate this - "sorry that's how they're made." The second thing is city driving - this car gulps premium gasoline. Shortly after purchasing it I took a 40 mile round trip drive on city streets in Los Angeles and it consumed 4 gallons of premium - that's 10mpg! No where near the rated 21mpg. I was shocked and since then I've been monitoring my street driving and the milage is unacceptable. My combined MPG is misleading cause I drive 80% on freeway. Buyers beware if you plan on driving city streets. It needs premium fuel and in Los Angeles that's expensive.

New to VW - pleasantly surprised
Our family of 3 needed to get out of our Saab for mileage and reliability reasons, so we leased a Tiguan as VW has some really good lease deals and I wasn't ready to be married to a VW. We've been pleasantly surprised at how much we really like the car, even though it barely meets what we said we wanted - a SUV that gets at least 20 mpg in the city. It has much smaller cargo capacity than the others we looked at, but feels much larger in the rest of the car, especially in the back seat when extra cargo room isn't needed (most of the time) and the seats can go all the way back. Its got a nice, compliant ride and feels nimble. Has a much more premium feel than anything else in its range.
An Overlooked Gem
Just got my 2015 Sel 4Mo, First off I got a great deal, money interest rate, great time to buy. We looked at some new ones on the market and so old. We just could not find anything that had the handling, the simplicity of controls and the bluetooth system. We looked at some that were a total distraction when it came to using the Nav etc. Now the Nav system in the VW has not been updated and will soon however if you are not an overly techy person and want a system that works, has one of the best sound systems (fender) excellent pick-up, comfort, Car-Net instant connect for help, directions Etc. GET THIS CAR! The CarNet is excellent. You can set it so you will know if someone exceeds MPH.
Sell Before You Hit 60,000 Miles
At approximately 60,000 miles, the engine started missing and the Check Engine Light (CEL) came on. Dealer told me that it was "due to a problem with the fuel injection system, the valves become coated with carbon causing the misfires." Cost to clean the valves was $600.00 plus tax. At approximately 92,000 miles, the car overheated and had to be towed in. Dealer found the thermostat had failed. Unfortunately, the thermostat is built into the water pump and the entire unit had to be replaced. That bill was just under $1,300.00 plus towing and three days of car rental. At 122,000 miles the CEL came on and the misfires started again. While driving to the dealer, the EPC light came on. Dealer reported that not only did the valves need cleaning but that the "shaft pulls out of intake manifold for the intake flap". That's exactly what they wrote on the service description, just jibberish". Whatever it meant, it required a new intake manifold. The entire bill was $1,360.00 plus two days of car rental. Picked up the car and drove off the lot when the CEL started flashing and the car stalled. Limped it back to the Dealer. Dealer called the next day to report that the spark plugs and ignition coils needed to be replaced. Cost $365.00. When I told the rep that the plugs had just been replaced, I was told that sometimes spark plugs fail earlier than they should. I requested that they replace the coil and the spark plug for the cylinder with the misfire so that I could limp it off the lot to the nearest Honda dealer for a trade-in. My last two cars were Hondas and I drove both of them right up to 250,000 miles without a single failure in either car. I'll never buy another VW. For the record, I found out that not only do the valves need regular cleaning but the rear seals frequently fail on these engines so watch for that expense as well.
The Tiger Iguana is the Heat! so I thought
Not sure why other review companies have given mixed bag of average scores...this SUV is the bomb! The acceleration, the comfort, steering, drive dynamics are all top shelf. If someone is seeking an urban cross over sized SUV, this is the one!!! I had a Forrester that was great, and plasticy. The solid driver confidence inducing ride is a joy. Very pleased with our decision. And after 3 years, having to replace the intake manifold, it cracked. Thank God for a service plan!

Buyer beware
The tiguan is a nice little car until 3 days after the warranty is over. Mine started leaking coolant over the Christmas weekend. It was still under warranty however by Monday it was three days over. Volkswagen said to us sorry now you have to pay because we were closed for three days. 869.00. Nice

Just Sold with 180,000 Miles ! Still great car
I had the car since 20k miles and put 160k more on it. I had to replace the ignition coils several times which is normal and not costly. Replaced several brake parts along the way and that’s about it. The engine is still like new. You have to keep the oil changed and do the maintenance. I spent about 4K over 3 years. If you do this is a great car. I would purchase again. I wish the steering tilted more but that’s it. I had the 2.0 TSI 4motion

Nice except for annoying engine vibration
I've had my Tiguan for just over a year. It's a nice car in many respects, and is more stylish and peppy than its competitors. The main problem is that, at certain speeds, the engine vibrates and causes an irritating, moaning noise. VW told me there is no solution because they program the automatic transmission to run at low RPMs as a way to improve fuel mileage. It's annoying enough that I really don't enjoy driving the car and will probably trade it in for something else.
1st VW and very Pleased
Love this vehicle all around its true Volkswagen thinks of everything. I don't feel or hear this engine vibration so not concerned at all. Ride and build quality is superior to anything else we have owned. will it hold up to the test of time? we will see so far 16.000 miles and like new Very happy. UPDATE,,,,we traded this vehicle some time ago but it was a excellent SUV while we had it.

I LOVE my TIGGY! FLAWLESS RIDE!!
They call it a GTI on stilts. If you like the VW GTI, but want a more refined, higher sitting ride, look at the Tiguan. This SUV is often overlooked, and I just do not know why! This peppy little vehicle has made me so happy! The interior is well thought out and intuitive, and for a 2015 model, is quite better than adequate for the technology it has. The interior room is amazing - it looks small from the outside but when you look inside, it seems cavernous! The 2017 model added 11 inches to the length, so if you need more room look at that model. The ride is solid and quiet, and this car is VERY responsive. Mileage is average, but I do alot of stop and go driving - highway driving is always immensely better. Since I use it for work and carry a load of heavy tools, my mileage is not that of the average owner - you will get fairly decent mileage like all the ratings say. My only problems were the gas cap - the gas station guy kept getting the tether stuck in between the cap and mouth of the tank. This caused the check engine light to come on which is an easy fix. Other than that - no problems in the two years I have owned this awesome SUV. Keep the oil changed and tires filled correctly and your tight thanks you by running smoothly. Plenty of amazing turbo power that confuses those kids that wanna race, and never a mechanical problem - NOT ONE! Comfort and a markedly luxurious feel in the fwd model I have, I love this car! The only reason why I would get rid of it would be for a newer one or an ATLAS or TOUAREG! If you are looking for a small (still has LOTS of room) SUV - try a TIGUAN test drive. You will be pleasantly surprised glad you tried it.

Irritating Vibration
The Tiguan a nice car in many respects, but the automatic transmission shifting is awful. It frequently shifts into too high a gear causing the engine to lug and vibrate. Then it shifts back down, only to try shifting back up again later. It was benign enough during the test drive, but the vibration noise and constant shifting becomes really annoying over time. This problem persists in newer models because it's VW's way of reporting better fuel mileage than the car actually gets under real world conditions.

Expensive but worth it
Bought our 2014 Tiguan R-Line and love it! The rear cargo room is a bit small and I was super nervous about rear leg room if the trunk was that small but it was more roomy than a 2014 Escape! I was amazed! Leather seats are comfy and the memory seats are great too! Off the line, there is about a full second of turbo lag but after that, it's gone. Engine sounds throaty and has a great exhaust note. We got 19mpg on mainly hwy driving which was disappointing but it's -10 where I live and I do accelerate hard on occasion, it also doesnt help that its not broken in! Paying 40 grand is a lot especially when it doesnt have a backup camera or sat/nav(extra options) but still a fantastic CUV
Upscale features for a compact SUV
I have owned my 2015 Tiguan for about 1 month and find it quiet, smooth and nimble. My biggest complaint is the seriously under powered stereo system on the SE with Appearance model. There is an upgrade to the stereo system but only for the SEL and R line option packages. The instrument panel is also very dated. The gauges and instruments look just like the 2010 Jetta! In a world where electronics technology is constantly evolving and getting better, the stereo system and instrument panel are antiquated and need the immediate attention of the VW engineers.
Tiguan 2014-2015 Review
Tiguan is handsome European crossover SUV. Pretty fast with a 200 horsepower strong engine, great visibility, amazing suspension I ever see. Tiguan go through any bumps smooth! Fun to drive and nice precisely handling. The smooth ride gets offset by a somewhat noisy engine when accelerating hard.
WV Tiguan great little SUV
Overall this is a great SUV when compared to the competition. The performance of the 200hp engine is strong, turbo spools up well and it has some great acceleration, only downside is the fuel economy is a couple of miles less on the highway than some of the other small SUVs. Goes good in the snow, very reliable I have put over 40K on mine with no issues, good room in the engine bay for maintenance.

dissappointed
when this car runs its awesome, let me say again when it runs this is the first new car i've ever purchased and within the first year i was having problems. Almost every 6 to 8 months something was breaking or failing on this car I've owned it 5 years and that NEVER changed i was trying to keep it cause its payed off but I'm over it. In all fairness i live in las vegas and I went to an outside mechanic not the dealer for once and he said its cause a lot of their parts are plastic and don't do well in our heat so maybe just you desert inhabitants go in a different direction.

base model but still upscale
I am leasing a '15 S 4Motion; the only options are heated seats, Monster Mats and wheel locks. Even though it's the "old" 2.0 Turbo engine, there's plenty of kick and I love playing with the manual shift feature of the 6-speed automatic. I'm a fan of German cars in general and have owned at least 10 VWs, so am a bit biased too, but I do feel a bit special on the road in the company of so many ubiquitous CRVs, RAV-4s, Equinoxes, etc. The only other crossover I even considered was the Mazda CX-5, which is neat but which can't match the Tiguan's performance. Plus there are great deals to be had now. It's comfortable and unusual in a sea of sameness.

Gas guzzler, but a freakin'rocket
I love how premium the car feels. I get in a new Tiguan and they feel incredibly cheap compared to this model year (granted, I do have the SEL trim). The engine is phenomenal and when you bump the shifter over into manual mode, shifts are quick. This car is definitely best when driven a bit aggressively. It's also very comfortable. I drive 7 hours pretty regularly and have no real complaints about seat comfort. Noise isn't great, but the ride overall feel pretty refined. it's much closer to an Audi than a ..Subaru..? in terms of overall ride quality. One more awesome thing: the sound system! Fender is definitely one of the best on the market. I've listened to Harmon Kardon in newer Mercedes models and the Fender is significantly better. A couple gripes about this car though... The screen is TINY! I'm glad it has navigation and all the features of a modern car but my phone is about 2 inches bigger than the screen. I would love for it to be a tad bigger and tilted toward... somewhere other than the ceiling. And finally... the mpg. It's absolutely godawful. And likes premium. And don't get me wrong, I'm not hot rodding this car non stop. I actually do my best to drive conservatively most of the time. But in city driving, I can promise you will NEVER see that 20 number. I've rolled in the driveway with 10 mpg for my trip sometimes. On the highway, if its a warm day with the AC off (bad combo but I was trying to max it out) driving 65 mpg you can get 30 on the highway. But in normal conditions, it sits around 25 mpg highway. A CR-V, CX-5, RAV4, basically any competition will destroy that. This is going to be the main reason I get rid of this car. I'd really like to be a bit nicer to the environment, and I think I'm going to sell this and purchase a Kia Niro PHEV to make up for all the damage I've caused the environment over the past few years.

Three items that are not state-of the art
The VW Tiguan drives and handles very well. The whole family loves it. I would surely buy it again.
First impressions
Have a car for a week (after driving used Lexus RX3303 for 6 years) and have first disappointments I test drive SE model but bought SEL with more options and to my surpirise has discovered that -- as fas as VW think power seat is one that out of 4 adjustments (up/down, lumbar, fwd/back and recline) it is enough to have only ONE powered and three manual. Only recline function is power - be aware. -- in a fully loaded car in 2015 VW did NOT make lights off automatic! This is such a surpise (and annoyance) to remember again to switch off lights when you leaving the car.
Very Dissapointed
I had a X5 BMW for 10 years, EXCELLENT car, no problems. Decided to replace it with Tiguan 2014 after reading great reviews. I've had it for 2.5 years and been having problems with various issues/malfunctions. My car is kept in the garage and during the last cold winter, the windshield 'exploded' while the car was in the garage. The dealership said it's from cold, my son has a Mazda SUV, kept outside and his windshield didn't get shattered. Had issues with the tires, one and soon after another one blew up. There was no wholes in it, seems like a poor quality of tires. Yesterday, the airbags malfunction happened while I was making a turn. I heard a slight crack in the steering wheel and the he airbag cover on the wheel popped up. It's good that I was nearby as driving with the popped up airbag cover and no horn is not safe. A good car but with a lot of malfunctions, which I attribute to inferior quality than other German cars.

VW Tiguan is a great SUV
The VW Tiguan is good, attractive design inside and out. Seats fit great and feel tight and safe. Visibility from drivers seat is good. Built very well: materials and design are excellent for the price of the SUV. Performance of the TSI is superb. The only thing I do not like about the VW Tiguan is the road noise when on most highways going at 60-70 MPH. Ride is great and comfort is great. VW intentionally has more road noise because they do not add the extra weight that comes with sound proofing their autos. The weight causes gasoline milage to go lower so they opt for better milage.

Nice SUV but mileage is really poor
Yes we have the AWD, and really wish VW had an option to switch in and OUT of 4WD. Gas mileage is the poorest I have seen in a small SUV and one of the few that doesn't have electric seats. For the money it should. Would not buy another one.

List of problems with Tiguan
Here are the problems I have had with the Tiguan over the past two years which together make me believe that the car is unsafe to drive. The worst problem is that even at the highest setting, the windshield wipers are too slow. This makes the car DANGEROUS in a heavy rain. It is also tricky finding the shut off setting on the wipers and so it generally takes at least a couple of tries. To add to the problem the headlights are too dim. The dealer says they are okay but they aren’t. The visibility to the right is poor if you are tall. The seat does not go down far enough and so your view is obstructed to the right. And if the backseats are in the up position, the rear view mirror is worthless because the head rests are too high. So we have the mid-section down all the time to see out the back. But that kills a lot of space. The head rests do not appear to be removable. All headrests are not comfortable for people who are 5'4" or 6'0" and they are hard and so even though the seats are otherwise quite comfortable, for a long trip, the car is not comfortable. The back seats only go down to about a 30 degree angle which means you lose a lot of what you thought was space for cargo. Turning off the turn signal turns out to be a trick; you go all the way left and all the way right and eventually find the middle which turns it off; bad engineering. The gas pedal is overactive and so there is a tendency to lurch forward. The keys to the car have automatic locking (sometimes). My car has been robbed twice because I thought it was locked and we come back all the time to find it is unlocked. Again, the dealer could not find a problem. The turning radius is pathetic; more like a truck. Like other cars, the automatic windows are annoying because it takes an effort to open a window a crack (going all the way down and all the way up). The red security light when the car is off is a tip off for car thieves. Brilliant feature. There is a ticking noise in the back that the car repair guys have no idea what it is but it is annoying on a trip. The backup system is out of date already; not bad, but not good either. The radio has Sirius and is otherwise too complicated. The Bluetooth no longer works. The gas indicator is fairly uniform until you get to the red zone. Then you have 20 miles, but it looks like ¼ a tank on the dial. Learned this the hard way. The gas door rusts very easily. You have to clean it every time but it is still rusting. The rest of the car has not had that problem, but we don’t get salt on the car. You have to go to a dealer to reset the warning messages on the dash even if it’s an easy fix. Also some of the messages are big brother watching. In the front seat console, the slots are too deep and narrow. So you have to rent a 3 year old to get stuff out of there.

Didn't last long before trouble prevailed!
Bought 2014 Tiguan in May. Have driven 9700 km in 3 mos., mostly hwy driving. Previous 3 yrs drove a JEEP Grand Cherokee Overlander. Disliked it lagged when speeding up to pass a car. My 2004 Toyota 4-Runner had awesome pickup! Tiguan's has good pickup. I drive 13 hrs, & found I couldn't stretch my legs, so my left knee would stiffen & bother me. Putting my seat back, made me too far away. I'm 5'3". Vehicle went in for oil change Aug 6. It drove perfectly prior; after it shakes like I'm driving in an earthquake at 80 km/hr and gets worse by 100 km/hr (60mi/hr). It feels dangerous to drive now. Taking it back in Monday morning to rectify whatever is the problem.
Goes through shoes like Imelda Marcos!!!
Don’t buy one. (that’s period). My Ram Ecodiesel gets 5mpg better, still has original tires (Tiguan is on third set of $1500 Michelins at 47 k). Rear window spontaneously blew into thousands of pieces last summer (I was standing behind it, had been in parking lot in tx summer and parked it in our garage; exited vehicle and heard a “pop”...just disintegrated!). In the state of TX, must get car inspected prior to registration each year...took it to vw lewisville @ 47k to take care of inspection and 50k service. Dealer called to say upper contol arm and bushings shot at over 500 bills per side. Tigger has had four thrust alignments due to my concerns about tire wear (wondering if it is four motion related), but each time alignment is “green”. Going to open a lemonade stand and wring this damn car dry!

As a 5 year old car with moderate miles so many issues. Timing belt, main computer, and gas line all had problems. 5k worth of fixes later it is running and still acts weird sometimes. Wish I could give a negative star review. For the initial price and having problems would not buy again or recommend at all!

This really needs to be recalled cause it causes customers to be strained with no gas cause of this issue!! I had to call AAA to help me. Buyers beware google it its all over the internet!! VW fix this small major issue.

Was fine until it hit 55k then issues started. Timing chain replaced but major issue stated was car started to Stall WHILE driving!! Dealer could not figure out fix. After doing 3k in dealer recommend repairs And it still was stalling while driving, I had to sell - it was obviously something electrical. I will never buy a VW again. 2014 , SEL Motion,48000 highway and local suburbs miles ONLY-all warning signs popping over the dashboard , very carefully driven, not an everyday car use....ball bearing down, WSS sensor down....brakes and rotors need to be replaced....$1100 + tax ball bearing and sensor, &+ tax brakes and rotors, $130 oil change(from $80 since the last time) -dealership costs....my Nissan Rogue-138,000 miles-oil change-$35, never had a problem with sensors or ball bearings, rear brakes and rotors replaced after $80,000 miles, front brakes-after 125,000, costs much less too....guess it speaks for itself....simply does not pay...

Very nice but too small
Great SUV but the cargo space is quite lacking compared to the competition (50% less space!). The wheelbase also makes for a choppy ride on rougher roads. Wish that VW would make the Tiguan longer so that it would give a more comfortable ride (both in interior space and road manners).
Tiguan beauty
The car is perfect sized for my needs. Great gas mileage. Very comfortable. The turbo was a minute to get used to. I will be adding a backup camera as it didn’t come installed. I’m pleased with my car! Thank you Edmunds!

Clock Spring Issue - Had to Retire Car - no parts
The airbag clock spring on my daughter's 2015 Tiguan broke in June this year. The car has a warranty extension for this failure, but there are no parts available. It has now been 2 months and neither Hendrick VW in Frisco, Texas nor VW Customer "Care" are able to help. There is not even a date available. I don't want my daughter to drive a car without horn / airbag. Also, the registration has now expired, as the car can't pass Safety. Car is now just parked until further notice..
