Seems better than the 2016 I owned but not by much

2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4dr Double Cab 5.0 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
I just bought a 2018 TRD Sport. The transmission is not much better than the 16 I used to own. I love Tacomas but abandoned them when the 16 model just didnt live up to its previous reputation. Bought a Frontier, which was a good truck but smaller and less fuel efficient. After speaking to other new 2018 owners I decided to take another chance which I hoped would be for the best. … Bought with the technology pkg. and a few cosmetic extras like step bars, all weather pkg., etc. Right now it has 350 miles on it. The first fill up at 185 miles averaged 23.5 mpg with combination highway and city driving. The Inferno color looks great with the tinted windows all around. The ride is very comfortable. The one complaint is getting in and getting out. I am over 6 ft tall so it is a little awkward and I wish the steering wheel had more vertical adjustment to it. Overall I am still not very satisfied. The transmission still hunts for gears and downshifts all the time. Dealer says to stop that you should engage the ECT button but why should you have to do that. I don't think this lives up to the Toyota reputation. Maybe they don't care because they sure have heard a lot about these transmission issues. this has been sold.
The awful transmission overshadows all the good

2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4dr Double Cab 5.0 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
I have now driven it for 18 months and still feel the same . The ETF button helps to a degree but it still disappointing that this one issue really takes away from the whole impression of the vehicle. I work with Japanese firms every day and they are so picky about the details I can't believe this type of performance was acceptable to the Toyota engineering people.
So much good stuff … between the looks and the technology goes down the drain because the thing can't figure out what gear it wants to be in !!! Some days I feel like driving it off a cliff. Shame on Toyota for allowing this to happen and shame on me for not test driving a Ridgeline. After 9 years in a 2009 Taco I trusted that Toyota could not mess up such a great vehicle. Make sure you take a very long test drive and are convinced you can live with this very noisy, balky constant up and down shifting.
maybe i got a bad one

2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4dr Double Cab 5.0 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
when at dealership before talking finance and deal be sure to get your trade keys back.the dealership would not give them back to me after asking several times,at first they did not have a truck that i was looking for, after 5 hours they produced a truck that I liked and sold to me.i have 3666 miles on my Toyota Tacoma and have been pleased with product.for the money great pick up.fuel … mileage I have been averaging 28.6 mpg.i believe that the way I take care of cars this truck will last me a good 20 years. I do recommend this truck for a person wanting a truck will all the features you want for a great price.

Which Tacoma does Edmunds recommend?
If we were putting down our own money for an off-road-capable small truck, we'd opt for the TRD Off-Road V6 4WD. It provides an impressive amount of capability without the sticker shock. The cabin is equipped with enough creature comforts (heated seats, a 7-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone charging, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and a sunroof) to make it an acceptable companion for a daily commute.

Driving
7.5The Tacoma steers and handles with quiet confidence on the road, but the V6 engine and its automatic transmission don't always respond quickly to inputs. All 4WD Tacomas benefit from Toyota's off-road design emphasis, but the TRD Off-Road is particularly capable when the pavement ends.
Comfort
8.0The Tacoma has an agreeable ride quality, and the seats are accommodating. But the high floor tends to make tall drivers wish for more adjustability.
Interior
8.5The interior is nicely laid out, with easily understood and effective controls. The cabin has plenty of space up front, but tall folks might disagree. The biggest shortcomings are the relatively tall step up to the cab and an odd driving position.
Utility
9.5The Tacoma's composite bed has lots of smart cargo management features, and there's a decent number of places for items in and around the cab. Its tow rating isn't quite class-leading, but it isn't far off the mark. Child seat fitment in the crew cab favors forward-facing seats and boosters.
Technology
We generally like the touchscreen audio system because it has large virtual buttons and employs knobs for volume and tuning chores. Supports smartphones with a proprietary Entune app instead of the more universal Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Lags behind Honda Ridgeline in advanced driver aids.
