Serious Breaking Issues

2022 Toyota Sienna XLE 8-Passenger 4dr Minivan (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

I purchased a new 2022 Sienna XLE Hybrid in Sept 2022 after an accident totaled my 2014 Sienna. At that time the wait for a new Sienna was 8 months due to supply issues. Dealers had marked up new vehicles 10K - they loved price gouged their customers. There was not even a Sienna around to test drive because they were all pre-sold. Soon after starting to drive the car I noticed a braking issue. Sometimes the breaks will "give" when you are braking to stop. It is very unsettling when this happens. After some research I see that it is a common complaint from Sienna Hybrid customers and a serious safety issue. This vehicle has less space and does not handle as good as my 2014 - which I loved. Today (my vehicle is 11 months old and has 22k miles on it) I will be taking my van into the Toyota shop for the 4th time this year due to a wiring issue. Next week I will loose $10,000 by trading this vehicle in and will never buy another Toyota again.

Literally wouldn’t know!!!

Purchased new. At 960 miles dashboard kept lighting up that several sensors were unavailable. Toyota said my undercarriage was dirty and sensors are sensitive - but they replaced. Couldn’t drive more than 10 minutes in anything other than pristine weather or the sensors shut off (currently in a 2021 Sienna rental and can confirm that this hasn’t happened ONCE so it’s the specific car not the model. At 5k miles car needed to be jumped everyday for 4 days. Toyota couldn’t figure out the problem after being there for 6 hours and sent me home ‘to give them a call if I have to get it jumped again.’ While I was there I asked for assistance with syncing the app to my phone (for remote start/locking features) and to show me how to work the tv. Three people tried to figure it out before leaving it at ‘let them look into it and get back to me.’ Next day car wouldn’t even take a jump and had to be towed in. Day 13 in the shop and they can’t figure out what is going on, and unfortunately because there ‘isn’t a tangible issue found’ they are at the mercy of waiting for Toyota to come up with a resolution. Toyota tells the dealer they need to find the problem. Vicious cycle with no resolution or end in sight for us, no one taking responsibility. Can’t order a new one because ‘everyone is at the mercy of whatever Toyota sends them.’ Such a mess, we are heartbroken after spending the time, energy, and money to purchase a new van.

2023 Toyota Sienna XLE 7-Passenger 4dr Minivan AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

2023 Sienna XLE AWD. Its more of an SUV. The hybrid is the way to go..not only does it do better than the advertised 35 mpg combined, but, contrary to other reviewers it has plenty of power. (The electric combines with the gas motor to give extra hp in the sport mode). It just feels like a safe vehicle..it rides and accelerates smoothly (unless you floor it, then of course, the motor roars). If you want it quiet tho, just switch to Eco mode, be easy on the gas, and its quiet and smooth. I did not find there to be a problem with the so called "non removable" second tier seats. Remember, the "stow and go" seats on the Pacifica hybrid are eliminated as the hybrid battery takes up all the room for the fold up seats. So, those are not removable either. Its easy to compare the Sienna to the Honda or Kia mini vans...the Sienna beats them bad in fuel economy, almost double at 36 (fwd) to their 20 mpg. As far as I know, the Sienna is the only mini van with AWD. Speaking of AWD, I recently drove 250 miles in a Christmas storm when pretty much many of the airports were canceling flights. During my trip, I saw at least a dozen other cars slipped off the road, by my Sienna "never spun a wheel". The AWD makes it safe (not to mention the safety tech, such as adaptive cruise, lane keep assist, airbags, etc.), but the icing on the cake is 35 mpg for an AWD with 7 or 8 passengers. There is nothing else (that you dont have to plug in) that can do that! Its not just safer, its better. Cons: Like many others, the infotainment system is fickle, and "works when it wants to". Oh, and by the way, the foot powered door openers are a gimmick. Best is to turn them off. Yea, they look cool, but, under your car clogs up with road grime and the sensors dont work. Update: While I sold my Sienna, my son bought a Platimum, and its also working out well for him. Downsides: Toyota works hard at making them scarce, and makes too many Tacomas, and others, and not enough Siennas. Then, dealers want to jack up the price, to make sure you are upside down in the vehicle forcing you to drive a vehicle you hate because you cant afford to write a check for 10k that you paid above msrp, because you were desperate and bought into Toyota's artificial supply chain issues. Dont pay over msrp. The Sienna is good, but not that good.

Fantastic mileage and very practical but unrefined

Positives: Fuel economy is tremendous at about 37.6 average over 1000 miles. Power is fine. Not fast but is even fine on mountain grades with a full load. Rides well. Quiet at highway speed. Good visibility. Easy to fold third row. Good passenger space. Lots of cargo space (though less than class leaders). Negatives: Engine is really loud and unrefined under moderate and hard acceleration. We also have a Honda Hybrid which is much more refined. Toyota can do much better with refinement. Backup camera is really low resolution. It is hard for kids to use the levers to access the third row. Honda does it better with their push button system. Wish it had wireless CarPlay. To sum it up. This car is practical as can be and gets tremendous gas mileage but you pay for it with a noisy and gritty sounding powertrain that really sounds awful on steep hills (though moves the car just fine0. Hopefully Toyota improves that and the infotainment on the next update. If they do it will be perfect. Especially if they let you get 8 seats in top trims.

Waiting,. Waiting......Not waiting

Was on the waiting list for a new Sienna to replace a 2008 Odyssey. Wanted the space of a van and the MPG of a hybrid. Didn't want to pay more $ for less space and get a hybrid SUV. Finally had a chance to test drive a Sienna and what a disappointment it was. Compared to the old Odyssey it was cramped inside. Definitely not as roomy, to the point that I would not want to make a road trip in it. I'm not picky when it comes to road noise, so I didn't think that would be an issue, but it was. On the highway it was very noticeable, even to the point of aggravating. Then there was the vibration. My wife and daughter could not stand the way their seats vibrated. My daughter was in her booster seat with a back and I could see the top of the seat vibrating very noticeably. And the vibration was noticeable in the empty third row seats too. After a 25 minute test drive it was good to get out of the vehicle and stand on solid ground. All those issues were even more noticeable when we got back in our 08 Odyssey and drove away. It was smooth. It was quiet. It was roomy. And it was relaxing and peaceful. Needless to say, I promptly removed my name from the waiting list and bought a Honda. I'm giving up some MPG, but it is well worth it. And compared to my 08 Odyssey, the new vehicle is smoother and quieter, like you would expect a new vehicle to be.
