it's maybe Average
Average meaning I would not buy another one. At 75k miles it leaks oil and needs a rear seal ($3,000), it uses oil on the highway, it has an odd whistling noise that no one can find (when going against the wind on the highway), the gas mileage is NOT good. The only reason we still have it is because my wife likes it.

Lemon or Bad Luck???
I purchased this vehicle new in 2001. As much as I would love to say how great this SUV is, it isn't!!! I do however love everything about it except it's reliability. Soon after the warranty ran out the engine began to have problems with the check oil light coming on when I checked the oil (which was changed very regularly more often than recommended) it was completely dry on dipstick. Took it to local Toyota dealer to check for "sludge" as far as they could tell none noted hum! Continued to drive and add oil before & after long trips. Not leaking just lots of white smoke. Last week check engine light came on probably need new engine or valve seals? In the shop now. Very disappointed!!
Time to get rid of this thing
I have owned my 01 Highlander for about 2 years. Overall it is an ok SUV, although my wife loves it. We bought it used with 45000 miles and it now has 113000 miles. We have had to replace the tires, brakes, and oxygen sensor ($200!). The heater broke and was stuck on hot for several months, the dealer told us it would cost about $1000 to replace the heater panel. After a long search I found where many others have had the same problem and fixed it. Turns out to be broken solder connections, I resoldered them and it now works for FREE! The rear axle is leaking fluid and was told by the dealer it was the axle seals...$350. Time to get rid of this thing!
Great SUV. Why Edmund uses "Wagon"?
Great SUV. Ride like a car. Smooth, powerful. Better my BMWs.
