Lousy Gas Mileage
I have always liked the idea of the early Highlander Hybrid; Compact, sturdy, Full Sized spare tire and great gas mileage. However we always needed a larger vehicle (minivan) for family use. Last year we realized we needed an extra car and I found (what I thought was) a good deal on an '06 Hi-Hy. Fast forward to 1+ year later and I have been getting a constant 17 mpg (city & highway) no matter how easy I go on the pedal. The electric motor never stays on for more than a few seconds, no matter how hard I try. I have been to 2 Toyo dealers in 2 states and both say everything is working properly "according to their diagnostic computers". My 2014 Odyssey gets bad mileage also (the same 17.0 mpg) but it weighs almost 1000 lbs. more. Has anyone else had a similar problem or did I just buy the worst Hi-Hy ever made ????
This is the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned
If you want the room, storage and hauling capability of an SUV combined with good gas mileage, this is the vehicle for you. While the average mpg is not better than a more recent vehicle such as a smaller sedan, it's wonderful to know that the hybrid engine makes for cleaner emissions. And I love the quietness of the drive, and the awesome acceleration when you need to pass a vehicle. I have offered to give this Highlander to a daughter who is driving an old Cavalier. It's going to be such a step up for her.

Great SUV
Love my 06 Highlander Hybrid. Bought in 08 with 93k miles for $16K. Now have 125K and all is GREAT. NO problems, no issues great gas mileage 29 mpg around town. When and if the hybrid battery goes out it will be no brainer to purchase a replacement.
Mixed Feelings
I feel the advertising and the sticker on the window promised MUCH better mileage for a hybrid SUV than it gets in reality, even while driving with Toyota's fuel-ecomony tips. Overall, I like the car, how it handles, acceleration, interior & exterior (decent length for an SUV). I have had it since Oct 2005. But we paid a lot for it & I am still upset about the low gas mileage. I know it's an SUV, but much better mileage should be possible.
Best all purpose suv out there
It tows, it goes fast, it is fun to drive, it is a lot more comfortable than our RAV4 on long trips. There are a lot of complaints about gas mileage, but I average 28 summer and 24 winter.
