02 Camry....not too thrilling

Goob, 09/27/2004
2002 Toyota Camry LE 4dr Sedan (2.4L 4cyl 5M)

We purchased the 02 Camry to replace the 96 which started to have problems and was getting older. We typically keep our cars until around 100k. I always go with a used car off a lease as we save big $$. We loved the 96 and it drove so nice and smooth, it was no thought to look at another make as my wife really liked it. The quality of the 02 is no way as good as the 96. The materials on the inside are cheap feeling and already show wear after 25k miles of use. We take very good care of our cars so it is not from abuse. the brakes are AWFUL. Toyota shoule be ashamed of itself.

"You're Gonna' Want One!" How True...

I went to a Toyota/Nissan dealership intending to give the new Altima a test drive but ended up test driving the Camary instead. The overall quality of the Camary is on a much higher level. When I closed the doors, for example, it was a solid sound not the rather "tinny" sound I heard from the Altima. The interior is well thought out and rather "handsome" for lack of a better description. The Camary drives and rides like a dream. Good pick up with the four cylinder and good milage too. I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a top quality mid-sized sedan. Drive it and you'll want one.

This car has an incredibly smooth ride. I drive from Orlando to Miami(450mi) round trip on a regular basis and the car is just flawless. The more you drive it the more you like it. I've had Acura Legends, 3 Series BMWs and a Ford F150 longbed pick up truck. This car is by far the best value.I'm sure the Honda Accord is due for a serious update and it will be fine too, but if you have to choose between the two of them right now- Go with the Camry. The handling is excellent, the sprited 4 cylinder should be plenty for mature drivers that don't do a lot of hill climbing.I only wish I had purchased the Naigation system.

Our Toyota Camry SE (4cylinder) has 85,000 miles on it currently. Here's what I've had to replace over the past 5 years of ownership: 1) air conditioning condensation liquid leaked into interior cabin of car -about a 1/4 gallon of water leaked after each drive resulting in damaged carpets and sound deadening material. 2) Original tires wore out in 6,000 miles!!!! 3) Rear wheel bearings replaced 2x. 4) Reset engine light ($90) because gas cap was left off car one time after fill up.

This is a great car for its class, except that for some reason, Toyota decided to ugly it up some. It looks like a whale made out of Jello. A friend actually bought one (not me), but I think I'm going to get a used '01 Camry. Obviously, the assorted sqeaks, rattles, and vibes that some people are getting are due to the new body design (and doors, trunk, hood, etc.) not having been widely tested yet. The inside will be as quiet as a mouse next year. : )

THE ONLY PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE WITH THE AM BAND OF THE RADIO, WHICH IS FULL OF STATIC. I WONDER IF THE WINDOW ANTENNA IS THE PROBLEM OR JUST A LOOSE CONNECTION. FIRST TANK GOT ME 30 MPG

I have owned many cars at many price points (eg Chrys 300M, BMW 325I, Cadi STS, VW Passat) most brand new, this is by far the BEST value for your buck. I have owned this car from the start, no problems what so ever NONE. Original tires went 90KM, everything else is 100% original and have well over 150km (95Miles) and not a penny spent. Change my fluids, and treat the car normal. I expect well over 400KM like a friend has. I totally would re-buy again. See you in another 5-10 years Toyota!!

This is my 5th Camry. All others have been great cars. This one is one of the worst cars I have ever owned! Engine cut-off problems, transmission problems (replaced), bad front-end alignment, suspension rattles, loose sunroof components, fender-well liners loose, numerous interior & exterior trim pieces warped-loose-falling off, defective seat tracks----and the list goes on and on!!! Toyota's Arbitrator ruled against replacement. This car is certainly not representative of Toyota's claim for quality control!! The dealer service personnel try valiantly to fix things as they "pop- up" but they can't rebuild the car! It is so unreliable we are hesitant to take it on out of town trips.

I've purchased all my Camrys used. This one was three years old when I purchased it with 34,000 miles. I'm almost at 95,000 miles and I've had no problems at all! Always go with the Certified Used Vehicles with a good warranty because you never know if the previous owner took good care of it or not. If you're looking for a reliable, comfortable, economic car, go for a Camry.

Let's face it, the Camry is not a Ferrari. It's a reliable, functional sedan. I bought this car with 118k miles, now passing 122K and overall I'm happy. I can fit a 9 foot long board in the back with the seats down, and tote my 3 dogs around in it everywhere. It's pretty vanilla, I definitely don't turn any heads driving it, but 5 people can fit in there comfortably. I currently have a catalytic systems issue which has a check engine light on, and causes the car to lose some power. Otherwise it's very reliable.

I gave up my 4-door pickup for fuel mileage, and picked a great car w/my Camry! The pickup this little engine has blew me away..engine sounds and feels strong. After switching oil and tranny to Amsoil, I'm now getting around 26 city and 36 highway! Roomy back seats ..even for long trips. Decent looks...(came w/rear spoiler) I considered a Honda..(no offense intended Honda) but after getting "into" this car for a while, I KNOW I made the right choice. Purchased used w/48,000 miles on it, yet car still feels "tight". A few small upgrades/improvements could be made, but if you want the best of aboth worlds, GO GET YOURSELF A CAMRY!!!!

We bought this car new and have put 73K miles on it in 3 years. Only 2 negatives: we've gone through 2 sets of tires, and the A/C has started not working lately. It is roomy and has great acceleration for a 4 cyl. I accidently drove this car over a median once in a blizzard and it kept on truckin' with no damage. Later, the road became undrivable and we had to sleep in the car! It still fired up the next morning. In the end, this is the car we pick when we have to drive cross country because we know it will not leave us stranded on the open road.

I set out to buy a Saturn L200 until the salesman had us test drive the Camry and Nissan Altima. The Camry won hands down. Wow, what a difference, for $4K more. This car wraps around you and holds you in its quiet grip as it hurtles you down the highway. 4 adults just took a 2200 mile road trip in comfort. Our fuel economy ranged between 28 and 32.5 MPG. Great with gas cost between $1.53 and $1.60/gal! This vehicle has the ability to get you out of a bind on the interstate. The sound system is sufficent. Smart door locks are a little too smart. Trunk is awesome. We carried everything we needed for a week, with room to spare.

Love everything about this vehilcle except: Poor functional design of the drivers seat. Seat is too short, so it does not give support under thighs, seat is not tilted upward enough, and most importantly, seat will not go back far enough to allow enough leg room. My 89 Civic LX has more legroom and a more comfortable seat. I expected more from a car this much larger that my Civic. I'm dreading taking this car on a long trip where leg room is very important to me.

I passed my wonderful corolla down to my mother-in-law in December. I was attracted to the new design and spaciousness.I love my car...hope its as reliable as my 93 corolla! I also noted the rotten egg smell. I only have 4500 miles and recently had my first oil change. The windshield chips very easily. The brakes do take a getting use to. It rides great on the road. I live 2 hours from my sister and it does 70-80 without a problem and gets 34 mpg on the highway. Most of my driving is city traffic and it gets 23 mpg. So far so good...reliabilty and future problems are my number 1 concern when buying a car.

Two Times Disapointed

I bought a Camry for its reputed quality. I was sadly disapointed. I bought this car new and have had numerous mechanical problems. First the back tires were chewed up within the first 7000 miles. Then the brakes developed a terrible shimmy when applied. Next the computer freezes the the electronic dashboard displays locking out all electronic systems, e.g., ABS, airbags, traction control. Next the transmission is failing. You might think this is a fluke, but I also owned a 1999 Camry that had may of the same problems. I thought that car was a fluke. I will not by another Toyota. If I am going to have problems with a car it will be an American car.

Bought the car new and it's never been in the shop, with over 77,000 miles on it, and I am a lousy driver and a rotten caretaker re: maintenance. This is my fourth Toyota and will stick with them forever. Got the base model and got every feature I wanted. It's pretty too. Still looks like new except where I've banged it up hitting mailboxes, etc.!

I went from a Ford Expedition to my Camry because I couldn't afford the gas in the Ford anymore. (My gas mileage is wonderful, consistently around 33 mpg.) I have owned the car for 5 months and have only one complaint, the radio doesn't pick up most stations very well. Other than that I love my Camry! I definitely would recommend this car.

My 02 Camry LE 4cyl has been a great car. Fuel mileage is awesome, interior room is great, and the overall quality is tops. My big complaint is the brakes. They require a lot of pressure to operate them, and even though the stops, it feels weird. I've heard that other owners have the same complaint.

What can I say? This is one solid automobile. The words refined, substantial and solid come to mind. It rides better than any car I've owned (over 20), and so far, overall mileage has been around 20 mpg (mostly NYC driving). Got it with 19,700 miles on it and it's like new. The engine is extremely quiet and responsive. Interior is well thought out, with many storage areas. Even the stereo (JBL upgrade) is a killer. May it last forever!

I bought my 97 (previous 1st year model) with belief that Toyota would take care of me. Boy was I naive! There were usual bugs: shrieking steering wheel, loose driver's seat, bad strut towers, chattering brakes, multiple dead bulbs, and safety recall. Krause's service manager gave hard time on everything but the recall. Found myself actually forgiving the problems and buying Sienna... until Toyota refused to extend any goodwill on head gasket leak 5 days out of warranty. In a round-about way, I'm glad I was too busy last month to finish negotiations on that Sienna. Now I’ve bought an Odyssey. Check out Townhall for how Toyota has treated owners who've developed problems.

We loved this car when we purchased it. However, at 4,000 miles, the starter/engine caught fire. Toyota has not notified any of you as to this problem, have they? We are on the third set of rotors and brake pads and are also experiencing all the rattles, etc. We have had it tied up for 23+ days in just under a year. Have been to arbitration but no accountability by Toyota. Per Toyota, "That's what the extended warranty is for." Toyota couldn't possibly have any lemons?!?

I just bought the new 2002 6 cyl Camry two days ago. Great to drive. Lots of power. I test drove the 4 cyl, but the 6 cyl is more smoother and has more power. The day after I bought the car, however, I thought I smelled a very faint odor like rotten eggs when I turned on the heater. It was very brief. I keep thinking that it's all in my head, but I'll wait and see. The only other thing I've noticed is the Camry's too long braking distance. Otherwise the car is roomy, and I love it! I got a great deal, $3000 off the MSRP.

Aside from a few expensive annoyances, the SE was fun to drive. Toyota makes a great family car with the sporty look, but it needed some tweaking. Based on prior Camry ownership, I'm disappointed in the '02 SE. Major repairs on this car were a bit more frequent than I expected from a Toyota. Maybe the new '07 comes with better results. I may give Toyota another try.

I went from a '99 Accord V6 to the Camry SE 4cyl. The SE V6 with all the option packages that whomever adds (dealer or manuf.), was out of my price range. Although not lacking in power, the quality of the vehicle in general stinks!,Squeaks, rattles, groans, fit and finish issues, etc. Beware of the "performance tires". They don’t like cold and snow.I ended up spending $600 for new tires. The dealer told me to call Toyota in CA. who basically told me that no, the tires weren't designed for snow and ice conditions and told me that I didn't research the technical data on the car and refused me reimbursement! Toyota's customer service motto should read, "Buyer Beware"!

This car has changed my attitude about cars. When I was younger I used to get excited about cars, couldn't wait to see the new models. As I cot older and accumulated experience thru the 70s, 80s, 90s, my passions faded as one car after the other dissapointed me. After going thru a period of buy American and accept mediocrity, I have returned to feeling excited about cars and the Camry is the reason why. I love to drive this car.

Great commuter, but not much else. Surprised and disappointed at the blue book value of the car. Lower resale value than our older civic with manual Windows.

I have been a loyal Toyota buyer since 1982. I traded in my 1999 Solara for this vehicle. This car is a disappointment because of the rattles, squeeks, creeks coming from the headliner and front dash. I took it to the dealer 3 times and on the third time they told me the car is in "normal" range for noise. I guess Toyota has lowered their standards to American made vehicles for rattles. There are serious inerior quality issues with camrys. I have not experienced the surging/jerking at 50 mph when releasing gas pedal with this car but did with my Solara, which is why I dumped it.

Great car except that I can never get fully comfortable in the driver's seat (even though it has electronic adjustments) and am always adjusting it. Also the V6 engine is not as smooth as I expected. Sometimes I can actually see the tachometer drop slightly and then come back up a gain without altering the pressure on the gas peddle. I also had one problem out of the showroom. A heard a "rattle" from under the hood at highway speeds. After bringing to the dealer twice (and a little pushing) they found that a bolt holding the power steering motor was "not torqued to specification" and tightened it up. The rattle is now gone.
