For a Top-of-the line, Expensive car - no value!
I purchased this car when my 19-plus year old Olds Intrigue, which was in perfect running condition, was T-boned & totaled. I originally was interested in the Camry, but when I was told that "for just $100 more" I could own the Avalon, and given that the width was the same (but roomier inside) as the Camry, and just 2 in. longer, I figured this would be a no-brainer. The ride is incredibly smooth. BUT: visibility out the rear window is partically non-existant; The steering is very "soft" and took quite some time getting used to; The built-in GPS system is TERRIBLE ("Turn right" - doesnt specify, if there's more than one road/exit! north or south?); Although roomy, the front seats lack desirable cushioning - on a long drive (90 miles), I found myself continously squirming in my seat; Not enough room between the console wall & accelerator pedal making my foot uncomfortable - again, on prolonged rides. The 2018 Camry had a "Heads-Up" Display. This is supposed to be a step up from the Camry, but Heads-Up Display (which is really desirble - especially since adjusting the controls demand you take your eyes off the road) is NOT available - at all! My almost 20 year old car, one that was heavier, also w/ a V-6 got 21-22 mph, city/ 30-32mph highway. With all the new technology AND an "ECO" position, I am now getting 18 mph, city, & 23-24 mph Highway! TERRIBLE! Even though this is a Top-of-the-Line model, carpeting (interior and trunk) not included/ is EXTRA, as is the cargo net (three things that came with my Olds!). Only at my insistence, did the dealer add these items - no charge- BUT: the first time I used the cargo net (basic groceries), one of the fasteners BROKE! It was made of cheap plastic - again, not what you'd expect from a top model. I brought the car in for repair. The following week, the OTHER fastener BROKE! In 51 years, I have had only 5 cars but I regret that I purchased (via Toyota financing) this car rather than lease! At half the price, the majority (not including gas milage) of my complaints would be (somewhat) moot, but given this model and cost, I expect MUCH MORE than Toyota has designed into its "luxury" sedan (next step up is Lexus?). Bottom line: I'M VERY UNHAPPY and am looking to trade in (at a considerable loss, I'm sure) for something more to my liking within the next few months.

Navigation system is not the best
The navigation system is very hard to see when in night mode. The symbol showing your present location and direction is somewhat confusing in daytime but nearly impossible to see at night because the color does not stand out from the dark background. Also in night mode if you zoom in to see city streets, the streets are so faint they are very difficult to see. Also, the current position indicator will hang up briefly at times and then jump forward.

I Left My Heart in Avalon
It is a fine running machine with very nice interior. It rides smooth, brakes well and handles flawlessly. The one aspect that puzzles me is that when one closes the trunk the sound is not a solid clunk, but a rather cheap sounding click. This is a minor issue but for the price etc., I expected that solid sound. Also it would be nice if the gas cover had a separate switch instead of the "unlock all and then push the gas cover to open". Something else I notice is that the indoor window/lock switches do not light up. My 2017 Camry does light up and it makes it easier to access the switches at night. Overall I am very pleased and would not hesitate to purchase the same model again. Probably the XSE instead of my XlE model, in fact I have been looking at the 2019.

So much luxury for a reasonable price!
Honda Accord driver for the past 11 years. No complaints whatsoever with the Accord. But no more 6 cylinder for Honda : ( so we decided to try a new Avalon instead. Dealership was great to work with. Got us exactly what we wanted. Black on black Limited just like the one featured in the literature. Beautiful car with loads of luxury. So far absolutely no complaints. Quiet understated dependability.

Cruise Control --- Warnings --- Dashboard --- etc.
Toyota 2018 Avalon Limited ... 5,931 miles ... purchased four months ago, Aug 2017 -------------------------------------------------- Cruise Control 1. "Set" the cruise control to 35 mph (freeway construction zone). Accelerate (with the foot accelerator) to 70 mph after the construction zone (do not change the cruise control while accelerating). Set the cruise control. The car hits the brakes and slows to 35 mph. This could lead to multiple rear end collisions. 2. "Set" the cruise control to 55 mph. When traveling on a road that is not perfectly level ... the car brakes ... then accelerates ... then brakes ... then accelerates. The transmission shifts through three gears, up and down (per a service tech who monitored with his computer). It may be an engineering achievement to maintain 1 mph precision, but it kills gas mileage. 3. On a recent trip, the cruise control stopped working. There was a warning light with a message that the cruise control is "not available". The next day the cruise control started working again. -------------------------------------------------- Warnings 4. a) The door is opened, the engine is running, there is no warning sound. b) The door is opened, then the engine is shut off, there is a warning sound. Normally a warning sound indicates something else is wrong. In this case, there is nothing wrong. -------------------------------------------------- Dashboard 5. The gas gauge light is dim. Can barely see during the day. 6. The A/C On / Off light ... Auto light ... cruise control ... etc. ... are dim. Can barely see during the day. 7. There are no knobs (only touch screen buttons) to change the heater / air conditioner. The driver must take eyes off of the road to adjust the temperature. 8. Must take off gloves to change the heater / air conditioner. -------------------------------------------------- Headlights 9. The headlights, in the auto mode, jump from high beam to low beam every few seconds ... even when it is midnight ... and there are no other cars on the road. I suspect it is the reflectors on the side of the road that has curves. -------------------------------------------------- Fog Lights 110 There are no fog lights. -------------------------------------------------- Misc 11. The passenger side rear seat door speaker has a distorted sound. The dealer replaced this speaker. 12. The key fob does not always work to open the trunk. 13. Only two cup holders in the front seat. 14. Too much bass on AM radio ... difficult to understand people speaking (unlike our Honda). Minimizing the bass does not help. -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------
