Smooth and Solid

2021 Toyota 4Runner Nightshade Special Edition 4dr SUV 4WD (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Have the Nightshade edition and the highway ride is smooth, the "sport utility" aspect is solid, and it's just an all-around great vehicle. 2021 updates are nice, and it has all the tech I need or want. Only SUV I know of where you can still roll down the power rear window, which comes in super-handy and also allows for some nice airflow with the other windows down.

4Runner great for us, though not for everyone

2021 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4dr SUV 4WD (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

We just replaced a 2013 Limited with a 2021 Limited. The full-time 4WD on the Limited works much better for us in the Colorado mountains. We also use snow tires; not surprisingly, the car is excellent in snow. While this model is not a capable as the Trail models off road, it gets us to trailheads, fishing and hunting spots that a common CUV cannot. And in the winter, most of the controls can be operated while wearing ski gloves... try THAT on all these touch-screen dashboards! The Limited also has a better-handling on-road suspension set up than the others, but sadly has 20" wheels. These do nobody any good... just more vulnerable and needing more expensive tires with absolutely no upside other than cosmetics. We use 17" for our snow set. That said, these things are trucks, and are a dated design in many ways. If a cushy, quiet ride with reasonable snowy-road ability with nimble driving characteristics is the goal, the 4Runner is not your car. Compared to our CUV, it is noisy, rough-riding, less comfortable, and uses more fuel. It is surprisingly good to drive on the highway, despite all this. But, if a RELIABLE, mid-sized, true SUV (my definition includes a two-range transfer case) with very good off-road ability is what is desired there is nothing even close to it on the market today. Add in extremely strong resale value and it's hard to go wrong. Oct 2024, now at about 42,000 miles. Little to report, other than continued good experience. Still no problem areas, only routine service has been needed.

I was hesitant at first but so so glad I decided to go for the venture TRD off-road. I absolutely love this 4Runner!

4Runner

I own two BMWs, and my wife a Subaru Outback. I wanted an SUV with 4X4 capabilities for snowy days, and room to haul the dogs to the vet and lumber from the hardware store. I did not want a direct-injection engine, but rather multi-port fuel injection so the intake valves don’t carbon up over time, and I didn’t want a turbocharged engine. The 4.0L V-6 of the 4Runner met the requirements I had. The only downside is that you can’t get a manual transmission (as we have on all our other cars) on the 4Runner (you still can on a Tacoma, but I didn’t want a pickup). The 4Runner drives, handles and rides better than I expected. Thus far I am happy. M Duane Coyle

Does exactly what it's supposed to do

The only complaint I hear about this vehicle is "it rides like a truck." Well, it IS a truck. That's what it's supposed to be. And since Toyota has been making essentially this same vehicle for 12 years now they've had plenty of time to get it right. And they did. A totally dependable, rugged, bulletproof hauler. This is my second 4Runner of this generation and the only change from my 2012 model is some upgraded electronics and safety equipment. It does everything I need it to do, and it does it flawlessly. After 17,000 miles on my current vehicle I'm totally satisfied. Update at 22k miles: Still no reason to take it back to the shop, except for regular scheduled maintenance, which is still covered by the factory. Not a single problem with this vehicle.
