Used 2002 Toyota 4Runner SUV Consumer Reviews
Almost perfect, but not quite
The 4runner has a lovely ride. It's not at all truckish. However, it's no car. The 4runner is smooth and quiet on the road. It doesn't have quite the pep I'd sometimes like, but it's improving as the miles increase. The gas mileage is also a little disappointing, although we do manage to get an average of about 19 mpg around town. There is lots of room in the 4runner. We can have two kids' car seats in the back and not have to have the front seats forward. The room behind the rear seats is enormous and we have never needed additional space. In the winter the 4WD capabilities and additional electronic additions such as ABS, VSC, etc. really helped and gave a sense of confidence.
02 4Runner a sweet deal
Bought new from my local dealer in March 2002. The vehicle is the SE model and has been a real value. This was the last year Toyota built the 4Runner for American sales solely in Japan. That is a real plus! Great in the snow and fun to drive on vacation. Overall a great value and would do it over again.

Still the Front Runner
The 4Runner epitomizes the definition of SUV without sacrificing the comforts of a luxury vehicle. This is my 2nd 4Runner and my 5th Toyota. You can't ever go wrong with Toyota, their quality, reliability, resale, and overall prices are untouchable.
Excellent Reliability & Utility
I have 2WD Sport Edition in Thundercloud color. Bought used w/135k. Now have 145k miles. It's been totally reliable, except for one minor 4Runner weakness - that darned power antenna! I replaced it myself for about $25. Otherwise it's been perfect. Can be a bit bouncy on rough roads, but it is a truck after all. Found the seats a little uncomfortable for my legs the first 2 months, but now OK. The utility is perfect for me & love open-air feeling. Size is perfect for me, but might be tight for larger/heavier people (somewhat narrow vehicle). Nice seat fabric on Sport Edition! MPG avg: 20city/24hwy. Rides on Michelin LTX tires.
Not for gravel roads
We purchased this vehicle because we live in the mountains and need a lot of ground clearance and off road handling. The only area in which this car has disappointed me is in it's off road handling, which unfortunately in our situation, is a huge chunk of time. When we purchased this vehicle we were aware of it's "truck like chassis" but this car is downright scary to drive on our gravel (sometime washboard) roads. I'm not going any faster than 20-25 miles per hour, usually less. This car fish tails or skids over the slightest washboard. I have talked to other people in this area with the same problem.
