The Most Reliable Used SUVs

These 23 SUVs are as dependable as they get

Reliability should be a priority when shopping for an SUV, especially a used one, as vehicles become more complex with cutting-edge tech features. Many SUV shoppers are now considering used models because new car prices are among the highest they've ever been.

To help you search for your next used SUV, Edmunds compiled a list of the most reliable used SUVs based on the latest version of the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study. The study is based on problems experienced by original owners of 3-year-old vehicles, or 2022 models. This data covers predicted reliability because the way an owner cares for a vehicle can also impact its reliability, which is a factor we cannot account for. We also link to our used SUV listings for each vehicle so you can see what price you should pay and link to each vehicle's Edmunds review, which is our test team's overall impression of the SUV.

The most reliable subcompact SUVs

2022 Nissan Kicks

The Kicks is the most affordable SUV on the list and is the study's most reliable subcompact SUV for 2022. The Kicks was introduced for the 2018 model year but was updated in 2021 with a restyled exterior design, improvements to some interior materials, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. The little Nissan offers many features for the money, including a generous number of standard advanced driver aids and plenty of available tech on higher trims. It's also very efficient and has easy-to-use interior controls. However, the Kicks has slow acceleration and uncomfortable seats, and it doesn't offer all-wheel drive.

Edmunds Rating: 7.4/10

2022 Subaru Crosstrek

The Crosstrek is a solid choice for a subcompact SUV. Its high ground clearance is great if you plan on light off-roading, and its standard all-wheel-drive system is perfect for inclement weather. If you don't need those features, you'll still enjoy the little Subie's spacious seating and comfortable ride. Another plus is the package of advanced driver aids that's standard on all models. The Crosstrek's base engine is underpowered, so we recommend the more powerful option that's in the Sport and Limited models. The previous generation Crosstrek was built from 2018 to 2023.

2022 Buick Encore GX

The Encore GX is a hidden gem that many shoppers overlooked when it was new. It's nimble around town, and it has a comfortable ride, an upscale interior and offers lots of safety and tech features. The little Buick also provides ample passenger and cargo space for its size. It was pricey when it was new, but used models are quite affordable. On the downside, the Encore GX lets in a lot of engine and road noise and has subpar rear visibility. It's important to note that the Encore GX is a completely different model that replaced the smaller Encore, which was also on sale in 2022.

The most reliable compact SUVs

2022 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota name lives up to its reputation with the reliable RAV4. It's one of the best-selling compact SUVs and the most reliable compact SUV for 2022. We like its smooth ride, fuel efficiency, and generous amount of standard tech. The RAV4 also provides lots of passenger and cargo space. But its underpowered engine and vague driving experience keep it from being the class leader. This generation of the RAV4 was introduced for the 2019 model year, and some used models are still a little pricey.

Edmunds Rating: 7.7/10

2022 GMC Terrain

The Terrain is the more premium version of the similar Chevrolet Equinox, which made the reliability study's list last year. The Terrain's low rating in our testing is due to its below-average cargo space, sluggish acceleration, and high price when new. However, prices for used models aren't that high. On the upside, the Terrain has a comfortable and upscale interior, and an easy-to-use infotainment system. The top Denali model is equipped with a lot of luxury and tech features. For 2022, the Terrain was updated with revised exterior styling and wireless functionality for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A rugged AT4 model also joined the lineup.

2022 Mazda CX-5

The CX-5 has consistently been one of our favorite SUVs and is one of the study's most reliable compact SUVs for 2022. Even though it has a smaller rear seat and cargo area than most rivals, the Mazda is a class leader because it boasts an upscale, quiet interior; sharp styling; and an optional turbocharged engine that delivers robust power. And unlike many SUVs, it's fun to drive. Mazda updated the 2022 CX-5 with standard all-wheel drive, minor exterior restyling and improved suspension tuning.

The most reliable midsize SUVs

2022 Nissan Murano

The Murano is the most reliable midsize SUV for 2022, according to the study. But its below-average rating is mostly due to its age. In 2022, it was in its eighth year of production for that generation, which is a long time. Other midsizers, like the Honda Passport, have newer tech features and more cargo space. But the Murano provides what many SUV shoppers like, including ample power, a comfortable cabin, and an infotainment system that's easy to use. It's also quite stylish for an SUV. Used Muranos are pretty affordable for a midsize SUV.

2022 Chevrolet Blazer

Although boxy off-road SUVs are making a comeback, sleek street-cruising SUVs like the Blazer are still popular options. Chevy's midsizer backs its sporty design with agile handling and a robust optional V6 engine that delivers snappy acceleration. We also like its comfortable ride and straightforward infotainment system. Alas, that sporty design comes at the cost of compromised rear seat headroom and a smaller cargo area than most midsize SUVs.

2022 Toyota Venza

Edmunds visitors save an average of $2879 off their new car. How much can you save?

This is the second year in a row the Venza makes this list. The second-generation Venza debuted for the 2021 model year and was discontinued in 2024. It sports Lexus-like styling and a luxurious interior. Only available as a fuel-efficient hybrid, the Venza boasts a quiet and comfortable interior and comes standard with all-wheel drive. On the downside, the Venza is small for a midsize SUV and isn't rated for towing. Due to its high starting price when new, used models can still carry a premium.

The most reliable three-row midsize SUVs

2022 GMC Acadia

The Chevrolet Traverse, which made the list last year, has been replaced by its fancier corporate sibling, the Acadia. It's the reliability study's highest-ranking three-row midsize SUV. The Acadia isn't much different than the more affordable Traverse, unless you want the rugged AT4 model or the luxurious Denali, which has features you can't get in the Traverse. But like the Traverse, the Acadia boasts a large cabin and a smooth ride. We recommend getting the more powerful V6 over the base turbo-four engine. For 2022, a package of advanced driver aids became standard on all models.

2022 Buick Enclave

The Enclave is essentially a more luxurious version of the Acadia above. Underneath the sheetmetal, they are very similar, so it's no surprise the Enclave is also one of the most reliable three-row midsize SUVs. It shares many of its strengths with the Acadia, including a massive cabin and a smooth ride, but the Enclave is pricier than its non-luxury rivals even though it doesn't have much more to offer. The previous-generation Enclave was launched in 2018, and a new generation was introduced for the 2025 model year.

2022 Mazda CX-9

If you're the type of shopper who doesn't want your family hauler to fall over itself around corners, check out the CX-9. Like the smaller CX-5, it's stylish, sports an upscale interior, and touts sharp handling for such a large SUV. The Mazda also provides plenty of power and a comfortable ride. Shoppers wanting all-wheel drive will be happy to hear that it became standard in 2022. The CX-9's downsides include a third row and cargo area that are smaller than what most rivals offer. The CX-9 was replaced by the CX-90 in 2024.

The most reliable large SUV

2022 Chevrolet Tahoe

For the second year in a row, the Tahoe is the only large non-luxury SUV to make it into the J.D. Power reliability study. Its huge size, inefficiency and somewhat downmarket interior may not be to everyone's taste, but there's no denying the Tahoe's versatility. The Chevy can seat up to nine passengers and carry tons of cargo, and it provides enough towing capacity for most SUV owners. And unlike most of its rivals, the Tahoe offers a fuel-efficient diesel engine. The first model year of the current Tahoe is 2021, and used models fetch quite a bit of money.

The most reliable compact luxury SUVs

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC

If you're in the market for a used compact luxury SUV, the GLC is hard to beat. Not only is it one of our favorites, the Mercedes also received top honors in its segment from the study. In 2022, the GLC was the benchmark in its class because it's quick, efficient, drives well and has a roomy interior. Its elegant cabin is also loaded with top-notch tech and is very comfortable. Our few gripes include a smaller-than-average cargo area and the lack of small-item storage. If you want the V8-powered AMG GLC 63, you'll have to look at previous years because Mercedes dropped it for 2022. The GLC was redesigned for 2023.

2022 BMW X3

Although not as highly rated as the Mercedes-Benz GLC above, the X3 is a great choice and is one of the study's most reliable compact luxury SUVs for 2022. It's a jack-of-all-trades but doesn't stand out in any one category. One of the X3's best attributes is its stable handling and strong engine that help deliver an enjoyable driving experience. But like all good SUVs, it offers ample passenger and cargo space and a wide variety of features and it's comfortable for long drives. The 2022 model year brought several updates such as revised exterior styling and interior revisions that include a larger optional touchscreen.

2022 BMW X4

If cargo space and rear seat headroom aren't a priority, and you just want a sporty SUV, then the X4 with its coupe-like styling might be the perfect fit. The X4 is built on the X3's solid foundation, but it adds a sport-tuned suspension and front sport seats for an even more engaging driving experience. Those who value performance will want to opt for the more powerful M40i model. The X4 received the same exterior and interior revisions as the X3 did for 2022. But you can expect to pay more for a used X4 than a used X3.

The most reliable midsize luxury SUVs

2022 Lexus RX

The long-running RX has been the stalwart of its class longer than most of its rivals have existed. Lexus SUVs are known for their reliability, and the RX grabs honors for the third time in a row as one of the most reliable used midsize luxury SUVs in the study. Shoppers will also appreciate the RX's high level of comfort and elegant cabin featuring top-notch build quality and materials. Our few gripes include a difficult-to-use touchpad controller and the stiff ride of F Sport models.

Besides the standard RX 350, an efficient RX 450h hybrid and three-row RX 350L are also available. The reliability study sampled 3-year-old models from the previous generation that lasted from 2016 to 2022. The RX was redesigned for the following model year.

2022 Cadillac XT5

We've already seen several Chevy and GMC SUVs on the list, so it only makes sense for an SUV from GM's luxury brand to land a spot. Since its debut in 2017, the XT5 has never been a class leader. Many rivals offered superior luxury, performance, comfort and tech. But most folks will enjoy the XT5's spacious seating, smooth ride and easy-to-use controls. It also received impressive scores in the reliability study. The optional V6 is another strong point for the XT5, and most shoppers will be attracted to its low used pricing for a midsize luxury SUV.

2022 BMW X5

The X5 is the third BMW to make the list, and, in the case of the X5, it’s for the third year in a row. The popular X5 is one of the top performers in its class because it offers what most luxury SUV shoppers are looking for: power, luxury, tech and plenty of space. There's an optional third row, but it's small. Our few complaints include limited interior storage space and a few blind spots that stood out to us. The current X5 debuted for the 2019 model year and tends to be more affordable than the sportier X6.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Land Rovers aren't known for reliability, but the Range Rover Sport must have had a good year in 2022. The previous generation of the Sport was in its eighth year of production in 2022, which is a long time in the automotive world, and fell behind many rivals in comfort and tech. However, the 2023 model was completely redesigned. The Range Rover Sport, which is smaller than the regular Range Rover, boasts powerful engine choices, athletic handling and a luxurious cabin. And like most Land Rovers, impressive off-road prowess. There's also an optional third row, but it's very small. As when they were new, used Range Rover Sports still carry a hefty price tag.

The most reliable three-row midsize luxury SUVs

2022 Lexus GX

The Lexus GX earned the top spot in the study's "midsize premium SUV" category. The three-row GX was showing its age in 2022, with a design dating to 2010. It served as the go-to SUV for shoppers wanting impressive off-road capability in a luxurious and boxy SUV. Like most Lexus vehicles, the GX is well built and delivers excellent reliability. But because of its age, it fell behind the competition in several ways. It took Lexus a long time, but a completely redesigned GX debuted for the 2024 model year.

2022 Cadillac XT6

The XT6 is the most reliable "upper midsize premium SUV" in the study. When it was introduced for the 2020 model year, the three-row XT6 was an all-new model positioned above the XT5 and below the larger Escalade. Although it never made much of a splash and runs mid-pack in its highly competitive segment, the Caddy has a quiet interior, roomy third row and uncomplicated tech features. Still, the XT6 isn't as luxurious, high-tech or as comfortable as many of its competitors. We also don't like its jumpy throttle and all-wheel-drive system that needs to be engaged with a button. On the plus side, used models are priced low for a luxury three-rower.

The J.D. Power reliability study focused on SUVs that are about 3 years old, but slightly older or newer models that belong to the same generation will likely be just as reliable. When you find a used SUV that's right for you, it's best to ask the seller or dealership for the vehicle's service records to ensure it's been properly maintained.
