Nice, but I like my 2005 better
I have a 2005 Forester that is the 2.5X Manual version. I bought the 2009 for my wife, with the Auto. It is the Premium version. As a summary, I like the vehicle, but the fuel economy is crap. We get about 20-22 mpg on average, whereas my '05 gets 26-28 on average. If we really baby the gas and drive ultra conservatively, we may be able to get 25 mpg, but that is a huge IF. As for Snow driving, I will take the '09 over my '05, granted, my '05 is more fun to drive. The '09 is like a tank in the snow. We are in the market for a replacement for the '09. Our family is growing again, and the forester is just too small. Perhaps if it got better fuel economy, we would reconsider.
Excellent Small SUV
I've owned this car two years now and this car has been nearly flawless. I love the low end RPM power this car has. The torque curve is very flat on Subaru's 4 cyl engine. driving in snow is great. Heater and air conditioning is simple to operate. Wiper controls are fantastic and make sense. Cruise control on the steering wheel as well as radio controls are like a a more expensive car would have. Changing your own oil is a breeze as the oil filter is vertical and you can get to everything without driving the vehicle on ramps. Visibility when backing up is best in class. Paddle shifting manual mode transmission is handy holding gear downhill. For ~25K out the door a fine machine.

Cant find a downside to this vehicle
Did not know SUV existed until I read Consumer Reports. They rated this #1 in small SUV category. I test drove also small SUV Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi, Toyota and the Forester out classed them all. I bought it used from the Subaru dealership (Jax, FL) and they had the Carfax. Took it to my mechanic and he said everything looked great! Wanted something that seats 4 & back seats go down so I can carry wood for my woodworking projects. Took it on a couple of long drives already and nice smooth ride. Car accelerates well given it is a 4 cylinder. I bought the SUV because of its reliability history and price. I read all the reviews on Edmunds.com and almost everyone liked their Subaru.
Great for tall drivers
I bought this car for 2 reasons 1. Head room,I'm 6'5 2. AWD Over all happy but a few issues to note 1.The car has an uncanny ability to suck in the exhaust from other vehicles, and it has nothing to do with the in cabin filter. 2.The design of the front seats. As the driver its almost impossible to reach under the seat to grab anything, and there is a cable that runs directly from the underbelly of the seat to the ground that eliminates passage. The passenger seat sits so low that even I feel like a kid in a car(I'm 6'5) 4.Rattles. have fun going back and forth to the dealer getting all the rattles in the body panels shored up while under warranty 5.Transmission issues at 70K mi 6.Sterio
The one and only
Bought this car new. Meticulously dealer maintained first 4 years. Excellent independent mechanic last 4 years. First surprise, we had to replace the front suspension lower gel-filled fittings at 50k miles cracked=$500.00. Second surprise, replaced right front brake caliper three times over time. Third, transmission cooling lines failed, go figure. Fourth, head gaskets $2000.00. On the plus side, tire wear has been good with Yokohama Geolanders. Exhaust system has lasted a long time (except we had to have all the heat shields cut off), unbearable rattling. This is the one and only Subaru we’ll ever own. Love my “Subie”? Give me a break. Going back to Toyota and Honda. Please save me! As of July 2018 we’ve reached 108,500 miles. We had to replace both mufflers. No complaints with that. But.....The car now has a mysterious antifreeze odor in the cabin and when you exit the vehicle. No visible leaks. According to the Subaru Owners Blog this is a common problem with this engine. Buyer beware! Both mufflers finally wore out. Replaced them, then both rear wheel bearings failed. Last straw! We traded the vehicle for a Honda CRV in March 2019. Interesting note: The well known dealer in our area resold the Forester for $3000 more than trade in value. It sold in less than a week! I wish the best to the poor soul who bought it.

2 year update
Have owned now for almost 2 years, and still am impressed by what a sound, competent SUV this is. Through 2 winters now, tracks like a goat-no way to get it stuck, and rain is irrelevant due to great visibility, wipers and traction. Body quality is high also-survived a nine inch wide, 12 foot long tree branch falling on it and grape sized hail without a dent or scratch. Plenty roomy (I'm 6'4" and comfortable front or back) and practical (carried everything I ever asked it to, much more than CR-V or RAV). Turbo makes it a VERY competent performer, and I think the handling is a great compromise between comfort and performance. Critics need to keep in mind that this is a Subaru, not an Audi
HEY! It's our 3rd Forester
What is most important to you if you are considering a new or replacement vehicle? As stated in the title, we have owned 3 Foresters. Should speak for it's self. We live in Nebraska, that too should speak for it's self:). My wife's car. She drives from our rural home to Omaha five days a week about 80 miles RT. Rain, sleet, snow well, you get it. Our ownership is based primarily on three factors. 1 Value for dollar spent 2 It does what we need a vehicle to do (and then some) 3 Our overall personal standards and ratings of similar vehicles keeps us going back to the Forester. No bling factor involved just dependable vehicle for - dare I say - practical people with a true sense of value.

Mostly great car. Now if stuff would stay attached
This was my first Subaru and I've enjoyed owning it, with a few reservations. The pros: I like the styling and the comfort of driving it. Although this vehicle is a SUV I LOVE that it's small. (I can actually fit into "compact car" spaces!) Even though it's smallish I like that I can haul stuff in it and that I can haul stuff AND people without trouble. The cons: The biggest gripe I have about this car is that I feel like I'm driving a tin can. The detailing is rather utilitarian and STUFF KEEPS FALLING OFF! For example, the seatbelt holder thingy on the backseat just came off one day. It'll cost a cool $125 to re-attach it so it won't fall off again. Various screws and knobs fall off of things or come out of where they're supposed to be attached. Every time I complain about this to the mechanic he says he can fix it and he does -- by just putting it back in again (thanks I can do this myself and do...often) or he says it'll cost me usually in the range of $125-200 to fix. This is an all-wheel drive so mileage isn't great. In the city I average about 22.5 mpg and on the highway I'm at around 25.5 mpg.

The Fun Mobile is dead, the Adventure Wagon lives
After retiring my beloved 1998 Impreza to project car status, I needed a new daily driver. I travel about 50% for work, so a big car payment just didn’t make sense. The 2009 Forester was redesigned to be more SUV than wagon, and is all the better for it. With the turbocharged boxer, it is as quick as you want it to be, but with gentler driving, does quite well on gas mileage. Driver’s seat is incredibly comfortable, and the first car I’ve driven in a while that I don’t HAVE to get out and stretch after driving 90 minutes. Back seat is comfortable and has TONS of room. Headroom for even the tallest folks, and a sizable cargo area. Lots of comfort, but nimble and a ton of fun to drive. Subaru owners become very loyal, very quickly. I’ve driven a lot of winters in 4x4 trucks and SUVs, and Subarus are the head of the pack, hands down.

2009 Subaru Forester did the job!
That it is a very reliable car and will be a great deal. Traded it in on a 2018 Forester in July 2018. Main complaint is when rapidly accelerating in automatic, the gears don't always engage properly and it acts as if in neutral. Dealership was unable to resolve. Disengaging the accelerator pedal was required to resolve the problem. Otherwise, the car served me well for ten years.

major engine repairs needed at only 45,000 miles
It had just over 45,000 miles on it when there was a knocking noise coming from the engine, so I took it to the dealership. They told me the short block needed to be replaced, and quoted me almost $5,000 for the repair. When I asked about a trade in or what my options were they asked me if I had driven the car without oil in it or something! I doubt they would have asked my husband if we had driven the car without oil in it. We have taken good care of maintaining the car, that is how we noticed that it was using way more oil than it should. They told me that without the repair it would only trade in for $3,500. I told them we needed time to make a decision and they did give us their loaner car for the weekend which was nice. When I returned the loaner car they said they would split the repair cost, they pay 70% I pay 30%. I did some research and found several other reviews of 2008-2009 Forester's needing the short block replaced. I plan to fix it then trade it in before anything else goes wrong.

Bad Subaru Story
This past April, I purchased a 2009 Subaru Forester from Byers Subaru, Dublin OH and eagerly anticipated the ownership experience Subaru promises and proudly bases its reputation. Contrary to the Subaru promise, my experience over the first 3 months has been a nightmare. The first service was performed within a few weeks of purchase ($700). A month later the vehicle stopped running and required a tow to a Subaru dealership. Initial thoughts were a timing belt failure. $600 dollars later, we learned it was a timing belt pulley failure and would require extensive engine repairs or an engine replacement ($2500 to $6000). The timing belt was not due to be replaced for 10,000 miles. Continuing saga .....check engine light came on.....traced to faulty brake booster 300.00 repair cost. Does this kinda of crap ever end? Subaru is selling the public snake oil regarding how reliable their cars are!!

The Bru' is true
This has been a very dependable, safe car. We've had it for 70k miles and it is very cheap to operate. I really have no complaints of a seriuos nature. the sound of the opposed 4 cyl motor with it's 4 spped automatic is less than inspiring but that's a minor thing. the fuel economy has been around 23 mpg around town and i suppose it could be better, but everything else has been so cheap to fix that I really don't mind it. All in all it's been a good car for short trips and grocery getting, etc. a good grocery-getter, no excitement though. a sue bore rue'

Solid car--not splashy
I bought this Forester used several months ago. I have driven 8500 miles. Here are a few observations: It is obvious the car is well built and, if maintained, will be around a long time. The mileage is fair. Hwy is 26.2 City is 21.5 The all wheel drive gives a nice feel in tight turns and in wet weather. The engine has some pep, but I do not use it as a sports car. The interior is somewhat spartan or utilitarian. It will not be mistaken for a luxury car. It is all functional. The seats are comfortable, but not for extremenly long travels.
Great small SUV
Very comfortable seats and roomy rear seat. Decent acceleration and great snow traction. Highly rated crash tests and very good resale.

Decent car, when it was working
We had numerous problems with this car. Around 72k miles, the car failed suddenly while driving the kids to the beach. The diagnosis and repair took nearly 6 weeks, during which time we were operating on one car (with 2 kids in school and 2 working parents). The problem turned out to be two major electronic components, the Vehicle Dynamics Control Module and the Automatic Transmission Control Module both failed. Repair cost was around $3000. A year later, also on a family trip, the engine seized. Turns out there had been an oil leak, but of course no warning lights whatsoever until AFTER the engine seized. This occurred only about 2.5k miles after the most recent oil change. This time, the repair cost was about as much as the car was worth, so we junked it. At 83k miles.

Great Car at the Time for the Money
I bought this car in 2009 when it had been awarded the Motor Trend Car of the Year. It is a great car for the year I bought it, and I've loved the AWD feature of Subaru that lets me drive this car with equanimity through rain and snow and ice (like a postman :) Of course, over time, other SUVs have come up with improvements. I can think of two things I specifically miss on this car: 1) A true GPS map system that doesn't require expensive DVDs to replace new street information in developing neighborhoods (critical for a REALTOR); and 2) a video rear-view camera for backing up (I've put a few dings in my bumper and fenders along the way). Other than, I'm satisfied and will probably drive this SUV to 180,000 miles!

The car I really wanted to love
I decided on a Subaru Forester after extensive research, and bought a 2009 model new. It had flaws in the beginning- the ipod adapter didn't work well; the stereo in general was not very impressive, the driver's seat was uncomfortable, the mpg was consistently on the low end - but I didn't regret my purchase until the big problems started at just 29K miles, within weeks of the bumper to bumper warranty expiring. Between 29K and 38K miles the car has had the engine coil replaced, the brakes replaced and now the transmission. It's not my driving, either - my last car went 9 years and 80K miles without a single repair and I've never spent this much in repairs on any car in 20+ years.
It is what it is.
Manage you expectations. It's a crossover. So it doesn't do anything exceptional. The insides are unremarkable. So is the exterior. We have 2 little kids. So we need lots of space, with two car seats. It has a reasonable amount of space, but we can't fit everyone in--and the dog. I like the head room. Also, it has pep in the city for local driving, but with only a four banger, it is gutless on the highway. Maintenance is OK. Go under the wire for the warranty on the AC and replacing the rotors at 3 mm. 46K miles so far. So if you want something with more room, get a real SUV (We have a Sequoia for long trips). If you want a sports car, get something with more guts.
Very Pleased
We have had our Forester about 3 weeks now and I am very impressed with the whole vehicle. It`s very comfortable and quiet. It just feels solid when your driving and, has great response in steering and breaking. We love everything about it so far. Have had compliments on body style and color, (sage green). First tank of gas avg. 24.3 mpg. combination city and highway. Also pleased with that. I was also surprised with the pep of the 4 cylinder after driving V6`s &V8`s. No need for the Turbo in my opinion. If you are looking for a great compact SUV this is the one.
It's always something new......
From purchase at 117,000 miles to now at 134,000 miles, this Forester has needed: Oxygen sensor, new catalytic converters, re-wired transmission speed sensor, two sets of head gaskets (six months apart), timing belt, water pump, thermostat, and rear pads & rotors. The transmission in this Forester is jerky & extremely rough. I have records from the previous owner, and it was babied and taken care of very well. I maintain this car as well as I can, and I just hope that it will last another five years. The engine pings horribly while running up through the gears. Detonating or "pinging" is absolutely horrible for an engine, yet Subaru claims that this is normal. I love Subaru's, but wow.......
big disappointment
I bought my 2009 Forester brand new with hopes it would last at least 200,000 miles with no major issues.when it hit 90,000 miles it started leaking oil out of one of the head gaskets unfortunately it was no longer under the factory warranty and I was going to have to pay close to $3,000 to have it repaired. This was my first and definitely my last Subaru that I will ever own.

Ruby the Subaru
overall a comfortable car that holds the road well in all weather types. The cost of long term repairs is it extremely high, I most likely will go back to Toyota. Nothing is inexpensive about repairing this vehicle. ***Update*** Dumped it, took a loss, and bought a Honda.

Bought it new and babied it for all 6 years I owned it. Regular dealer servicing throughout. No major issues until transmission completely blew at 132K. Too early for an automobile to blow a transmission.

Overall a fun and capable Subaru
I purchased this car used for about $8k with just about 161K on the odometer to replace a totaled grad present thanks to an inattentive freeway lane-changer. I loved it the moment I saw it, but dreaded the notch-y first gear. For being a younger male driver, I want something practical and safe, yet fun but wanted some comfort for occasional long drives and never could find a car i liked that didn't cause minor back aches even on a short test drive, except for this one. If only it had a few more inches of trunk space and more factory stereo options as the 80w preamp is barely enough for the 4 main, let alone the opt 6 speaker set, and I've read the NAVI is not at all user-friendly
Up to 200,000 I hope it goes to 300,000
I’m a stay at home mom so I picked this car because it has one of the safest ratings. I don’t drive very far with it. I mostly do short trips. We had minor problem nothing big. I have two kids so it feels like the car will be too small if we have another child. I would like to try to make it work if we do have another baby because I think if I keep doing normal maintenance on it I will get to 300,000. My husband is a Mr. Fix it guy so he maintains and tune ups the car and our Mechanic is a very trustworthy man and never over charges or makeup stuff when we have a problem my husband can’t fix. Overall impressed with it. I just wish it was a little bigger. Don’t go to dealerships or commercial chain mechanics !!! We’ve been lied to so many times. Find out a good local guy or someone that knows how to fix cars. YouTube is always been our best friend because they will tell you everything about your car.

Good basic utility SUV under $20000
Bought this after test driving CR-V and RAV4. Did not want to pay more than $20,000 for a new car and needed an SUV. New 2009 style was ok and 4wd system is very good. Mileage is as good if the mechanics tune it right. After 1st service mileage got better; after 2nd it went down and 3rd now has gotten better again. Got 30 mpg to Chicago and again to Cincinnati recently from Rochester, NY. Gets about 22 around town and overall around 25 mpg. have had no rattles or mechanical problems. Quality is excellent; have had Toyota mostly until now. Only thing I don't like is that it seems a bit sensitive to high/cross winds; could be the tires though.
Great car.
We bought our Forester Turbo at a little over $26k USD. The inside is amazingly spacious, enough legroom for 4 decently sized adults. Turbo hits hard from like 2500RPM-5000RPM, which is more than necessary for normal driving. Yeah, it could use a 5th gear because the high RPMs feel dead, but it's really not necessary. It goes fast enough. Tiptronic is nice. Your mileage will top out at about actually 27mpg for 100% highway driving, no AC and windows open at a constant speed of 60MPH (2100RPM). The XT WILL embarrass any other 4- cylinder car (with the exception of the really high end ones) and it will most certainly keep up with the 6's and 8's. Adequate trunk space. 5 star crash rating.
It's about love
I could have paid less for my Forester if I had been more patient but it's about love and the extras I might have added for the same price were not terribly interesting or involved trade offs (standard, turbo) I wasn't willing to make. I have no problem with stereo volume but the plastic/felt interior, goofy high chrome exterior trim, engine high speed 'rev' and blind spots exist. I am not thrilled with the armrest, but my dog likes it and I have issues with the ipod integration kit. But that's it, other issues are more industry-wide technology-style issues than Subaru's 'fault'. 15,000 miles, 6 major road-trips from the snow to the desert and its still all about love.
Impressed first time Subaru owner
I am a first time Subaru owner and have been very impressed with this vehicle. I drive an average of 30k miles per year and have not experienced a single problem with this car (knock on wood). PZEV is not noticeable and it is nice to be able to reduce emissions so effortlessly! 28mpg on average (20% city/80% highway) mostly at 75-80 mph in the mountains, goes anywhere (deep snow, snow packed roads and ice) and it is comfortable. The 5-speed manual is essential as the non-turbocharged automatics are sluggish. Have had it on mild off road trails and the clearance/traction combination is great. As long as you take it slow, it will make it with flying colors!
My Perfect SUV
This is my 6th Subaru, but in between I've owned Toyotas and Chevys. Before Subaru I've owned just about all makes of mid-priced cars. This Forester (my 4th) has great styling, a comfortable well put together interior, and best of all, full time AWD. Once you own a Subaru you always wonder why you'd buy anything else. The cars starts easily, drives flawlessly and is greatly admired by people at work and on the street. A black Forester with black leather and dark tinted windows is one classy ride. Storage room is great, the stereo system is clear and easy to use and the huge sunroof is a pleasure. One thing I do know... all future cars for me will start with the word Subaru!
A great car for little money.
Owned & drove one for 9 years & was amazed how much value remained when I recently sold it with 102,000+ miles on it. Built like a tank. Tough, dependable, great in all kinds of weather. Enjoyable to drive 5 Spd stick.

Should have gotten another car
The car has a non turbo 4 and it has very poor performance and gets dismal mileage, 15 to 16 in the city, 20 to 21 on the highway. It rattles daily, the carpet finish is poor, it takes 3 to 5 turns to start in the rain and the nav system is not only hard to use it is very bad at getting you from A to B in the easiest way possible.
Want to love this car, but...
I like this car, but can't get excited about it. Overall handling is very good and the turning radius is the best of any small SUVs that I've driven. It's a very stable drive, and it's been good on rough roads and in the rain. I have no problem with the sound system as many others seem to have, but I'd love to have more power, the lack of which is sometimes downright dangerous when trying to enter the freeway or pass slow cars on the two lane roads in the desert where I live. The car has been fairly trouble free for three years, except for the A/C going out last summer in 100+ weather here. But Subaru took care of the problem and I have to say that they've been very good overall.
Fun, Fun, Fun
Only 300 miles, but here are first impressions. Would rather have V6 than turbo due to premium gas. Arm rest are very low on left side, unsecure on right side. Would love better seat adjustments. Move panic button from back of key to front, I always seem to hit it when I'm unlocking the hatch. It is fun to drive. Road noise is pretty loud at hwy speed. Love the room! Much better than others After test driving almost everything, Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, MBenz Mclass, Acura, this was the best choice. The Acura has more comfortable seats and armrest for tall people like me, but cost $15K more. Just couldn't justify.
Repair nightmare
This has major maintenance issues. You will spend thousands of dollars repairing everything! The gaskets, the catalytic converter( there is more than one in this vehicle),tire sensor, . exhaust....The maintenance department will RIP you off.
dont buy xt
The engine on this car (turbo) blew up in a remote location late at night in a snow storm. We had kids in the car. BAD experience. Totally unacceptable for a car with 9600 miles on it. Subaru paid for the rental car for the time my car was at the dealer; plus got them to pay me $1000 for my hassle and pay for free scheduled maintenance on the car for the rest of the lease term. I was told by dealer that turbo engines have an oil piping problem. The turbo gets starved of oil. The result is mechanical failure of turbo. Metal pieces somehow get into engine. Bye-bye engine.
Junk
I trusted the Subaru name, unfortunately it does not live up to. No power, poor interior design, below average mpg. Had to put a new engine at 120k miles, replaced all 4 wheel bearing because they were rusted out. Can't wait to get rid of.

Side mirorrs
We have 2 Impreza and a 2009 Forester. The side mirrors are set to high. they block 90% of the side vision when you entering another side road, you cant see nothing. Are there that can give me an idea if there is any other mirrors that I can on it instead the original ones. Also stero sound very poor at the back, front seats uncomftable. Thank you.
Worst Car I've Ever Owned
This is the worst car I've ever owned. In less than 3500 miles, it's been in for service on five separate occasions. Im not sure whether Subaru needs to redesign this vehicle, improve assembly procedures/training, or conduct more thorough testing, but I do know that somewhere along the way, Subaru lost sight of its commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. I will never purchase another Subaru and would never recommend one, as I feel that I simply cant rely on this vehicle. Wheres the love, Subaru? P.S. - Subaru Customer Service more hindrance than help. They simply don't care.
Best small SUV out there now!
We've had small SUVs/CUVs since the first ones came onto the scene. This time it was between newest CR-V, Outlander, or Forester. Didn't like weird styling which sacrificed utility/visibility on new CR-V, couldn't find right color/options/price combo on Outlander, but we instantly loved the simple, stylish, and useful design of the new Forester. Even in "base" trim, has the features you need and many you'll want -- all at a great price. Peppier with manual shift, and improved in every way. Great interior room and visibility, nice style inside and out. More mainstream than ever, but better for it!
Second Subaru owner
I Loved my 2005 Subaru Legacy Sedan, but after my son totalled it (oops) I knew I wanted a second Subaru. Spending more than I ever expected, I purchased the L.L. Bean edition 2009 Forester. I do love the car, but have three concerns. The plastic panel which covers the radio is not clear. It makes the numbers sl. blurry. Also, and of greater concern is that I experience a slight sideways motion when going over bumps. Will contact the dealer. Gas mileage not as good as I hoped for. 22.2 mpg. Sounds like I don't like my new car, but I love the reliability of Subaru. It's a beautiful car. As impressive on the outside as a Lexus.
Damn good car
Bought my first Subaru because my brother and his wife said it was thee car to drive. Bought one and I really enjoy it. Neighbors love the looks. They always ask me about it. Live in upstate NY where winters are brutal. Forester will go through anything. Stock tires are not that good. When stopping in ice/snow car would skid too much. Also tail end slips out a bit in snow. Replaced them with Nokia all weather tires. Also had hood rust or chipping away situation. Dealer repainted roof. Same thing with side drivers door. They repainted that too. Love the back lift and fold down seats;very versatile. Back seat room is great, not a "fake" back seat but real room for adults. No rattles.
Subaru Newbie
The Forester handles well at all speeds. It is peppy and climbs hills well especially when in sport mode. Is relatively quiet. The gas mileage has been good so far. I got 28-30mpg driving speeds around 55-65. Cabin is both roomy and comfortable, except for passengers seat. Visability is excellent
Little dissapointed
I bought my 2009 Subaru based on safety rating and new design. I'm mostly happy with my purchase but several small improvements are needed: Three separate windshield cracks within the first six months! Most of my driving is done on I5 Hwy. I owned a Jeep for 10 yrs, and Jeep windshield are even more upright than the Subaru and you do get plenty of dings, but it didn't crack instantly. The paint is too thin as small rocks from the road takes chunks of paint off and I now have several rust spots on the front grill/hood area. Interior silver coat on the plastic interior door handle, etc. are easily scratched and same with exterior paint. Stereo and AC is weak.
Susie Subaru
Great car and without a doubt one of the best cars I have had the pleasure of owning.

Ecstatic!!!
As a first time Subaru customer, I purchased this Forester on 6/30/08, after reading all of the reviews here, as well as on other websites. My wife and I traveled from Columbus, OH to Cleveland, OH (140 miles), with luggage and the A/C on, this past weekend, and averaged 29.1 mpg! We picked up my in-laws and their luggage and drove to Rome, NY, (an additional 370 miles) again with the A/C on, and for that portion of the trip, as well as the return trip, we averaged 28.2 mpg's! Now you know why I'm ecstatic - this Forester isn't even broken in, and it's getting excellent fuel efficiency. By the way, our Subaru is a PZEV (partial zero emissions vehicle).
Don't Touch My Baby!!!!!
I love my 2009 Forester LL Bean Edition, we have gotten a consistent 25 mpg and have had zero issues in the almost 3 years we've had it. We have three reasonably big dogs who fit easily in the back with the seats folded down (and lots of rubber matting!!) and have driven for over 12 hours at a time with the dogs extremely comfortably! I love the "driving for dummies" addition of letting me know my tires are low which has eliminated the need for me to check them and the heated seats are a gem! The driver's seat is my favorite, I can raise it so I can have a panoramic view as I drive and it's sleek design makes it easy to park even in tight spots.
Good Value-and Fun Too
The 2009 Forester in base trim provides a ton of utility, capability and safety for a fairly low price. I am a big-tall type and most vehicles don't fit me well-the Forester has plenty of room and big, wide opening front doors for easy entry. Excellent visibility and driver sight lines. Negatives- Seat cushions are too short, pedal space is tight for size 14E shoes and the seat cloth and carpet are cheap feeling. Biggest complaint INTERIOR RATTLES!! The clutch is smooth, but the drive-by wire throttle hangs revs-coupled with a notchy shifter makes smooth shifting challenging, however, the stick allows you to make best use of the high revving flat four. Handling is nearly sport car class.
Dissatisfied
This is the 7th Subaru that I have either owned or leased (5 owned and 2 leased) and this the worst experience I have had so far. The initial concept is good, but the end product definitely needs improvement. I drive 30,000 miles a year in MN. Poor windshield wiper design (front and back), build quality needs to be upgraded (had a water leak in the vent system and now I have major mildew problems. Poor placement of heated seat switches, auxiliary outlet plug, and IPOD plug. Heat is either off or on with poor modulation. Poor design on center storage/cup holders. Needs a five speed transmission; hunts for gears all the time. Buy an Outback. Forester missed the mark, at least for now.
