Used 1992 Pontiac Grand Am Consumer Reviews
worked great for the first year
I bought this car in march of 2001. Good thing it had a warranty, because 2 days after I bought it the lifters went. A oxygen hose sensor also broke, and just recently (about 3 months ago it blew a headgasket. This was stemmed from the car overheating due to two faulty coolant fans. Luckily I did the work to this car myself, and saved myself about $2000.00. When this car runs, it runs great, but if it starts to break down, look out. It is a very sharp looking car and turns all the ladies heads, but the Quad 4 is a total peice of junk!! This car should have been a total recall.
Glad its gone
Replaced transmission, brakes, 4 alternators,3 distributors, steering, ignition,4 batteries, steering wheel lock, 2 clutch, fuses for horn and lighter continually blow, outside rubber panels on the side of the vehicle paint is gone, Leaks into the inside the car Placement of the engine makes it hard to work on without removing the manifold
Do not buy one of these
I have had absolutely no luck with any grand am i have owned two of them and poured money into both of them they are still worthless and are not reliable in any way shape or form I have kept up the maintenance on both of these cars and then have left me stranded dozens of times literally hours and hours from home not a good buy no matter how cheap you get it
92 Grand Am gt
This is a awesome car, if you ever get a chance to buy one of these cars, then definetly go for it! the 3.3 litre engines are the best and these cars are great on fuel!!!
Money well spent!
The Pontiac Grand Am is definitely well worth the money. I bought the Grand Am in 1992 and anticipated having it for about 7 years. I have had it for 10 years now and is currently at 126,000 miles. It has been extremely reliable with only having minor repairs such as replacing brakes and normal maintenance.
High miles, still goin'
I've had my Grand Am for a while, what a workhorse. Im currently sitting at 203,000 miles and counting. This car will not die!
Engine is junk
Engine had to be rebuilt around 110,000 miles even with excellant mileage.
Not much
Once you get 100,000 mile, get rid of the car. Maintenence will kill you.
Ten Years and Still Going
Great ride, lots of extras were standard. This was the first year of the redesign that is still being used today! V6 is a must! Would recommend purchasing another one.
good ride
I just got this ride it is fun to drive and it is in really good shape.
Fun little car!
I love my little Grand Am. We just need a bigger vehicle for taking long trips in.
Good Investment, but occasional hangups
I've had my car for 7 years. Biggest problem was the head gasket. Some problems with the electrical coil. Actually runs well on 3 cylinders (due to coil malfunction). I really love my car. It now has 203,000 miles on it and runs very well. with so much miles you can bet on some problems, but the car has never broke down and left me stranded. It also starts on little juice.
3300 engine. Great Experience, first car
I was given this car for my 16th birthday in the early 2000s. when I got it it had around 75,000 miles on it and I drove it up to 130,000. Car has been a great car, no major repairs needed. I have been in 3 or more low speed accidents with it and it has kept me safe and keeps on rolling. Gas mileage was around 26mpg averaging highway and city together. I kept up on maintenance and oil changes and the car have been great!
Not bad
A great car all around
Love it!
Extremely reliable. I bought it with 91,000 miles, and now it's up to 151,000, with only minor maintenance required. It needs a new fuel injector, new plugs and wires, but other than that, nothing fancy. I will admit, it's hard on alternators at times, as well as brakes. Also, the paint has blistered terribly, but I think this is either a recall issue, or a poor quality aftermarket job. Overall? Incredible, fun car! I love it!
92 Pont Grand Am - excellent 2nd car.
I have owened this car for over 8 years, purchased used in excellent condition. The car now has 100,400 miles on it, mostly local, stop & go driving. It is highly reliable. My most expensive repair was under $300 and very, very few repairs were ever required. The car still looks and performs like new. Absolutely no rust and the finish shines.
Quad 4
I bought my car from a friend. I've always wanted a grand am, and let me tell you I will never buy a pontiac every again. The day after I got the car it was leaking anti-freeze a week later i spent 300 more dollars for plugs, breaks, and other small repairs, now this week I found out I need new fuel injection and there is a small leak in the head gasket. This car was a waste of time and money. I suggest buying a V6.
Greatest deal ever!!!
I bought this car for a great price and have had it for 80000 miles. It has been extraordinary and i have no complaints. I brought it in for a few minor repairs, which paid off in the end. Im now upgrading to a 98 grand am and can only hope for the same results.
Cheap buy.
I bought the car for $650.00. The people I bought it from lied about a lot of "work" they had done to the car. Brakes, and the cooling system. The brakes went a year after I got it and the radiator and water pump went about two weeks after I got it. Other than that Its been a great car. Always been a Pontiac Kid and will stay a Pontiac Kid. It has 173000 and still going strong!
Engineering disaster
All is well, except the foundation. How can you enjoy the vehicle if it leaves you on the road side five to eight times a year. At 95k everything starts to break. Fuel pump, transmission, starter, alternator, transmission again, electrical system, ABS, and so on. What if it is actually an engineering miracle? - Cleverly designed to fall apart at around 100k. Some idiot engineer thought that then the consumer is going to buy another one. Never happens.
Wanda's Review
Car has been good to us over the last 1 1/2 years. The steering is a little rough, and a little squeaky.
Money eater...
Ok I had the car for 1 year before all the chaos started. I ended up replacing for starters the alternator about 6 times in one year. I also replaced the battery, computer chip, radiator, water pump, had it tuned up twice in one year because it was missing/skipping (seemed like it would cut off)...did not run smooth. I was breaking down about every 3 months or so and the money spent on trying to maintain. it was unbelieveable, because every item replaced was impossible to get to. Probably will not own a pontiac again. Fixing this was very taxing...
Only Car I will ever drive!
The Pontiac Grand Am will be the only car I will ever own. This car is very dependable, very sporty, has a great interior design...its just a great car! I brought it used with 99,000 miles on it and it is worth every penny. I would recommend a Grand Am to anyone.
My good luck!
I purchased this car new and have driven the wheels off it. I have changed the oil faithfully every 3000- 3500 miles. Other than a head gasket about every 160,000 miles, and routine brakes about every 70,000 miles I have had nothing but superb reliability. After 340,000 miles I still have original clutch, stater, master cyl, fuel pump, all signal and brake bulbs, air conditioning still functions as new. I wish all of my cars could have been this reliable. The only breakdowns I have had in all those miles is a failed crank sensor ,2 times.
good car
I bought this car about 4 years ago and have had only minor trouble with it brakes, tires, etc. at 140,000 miles car is still in good condition. I have no regrets about purchasing this car
Still sucks
I have owned this car for 8 years now and the thing is still a piece of junk. At 25,000 I had to have the trans rebuilt. I am on my fourth set of tires and brakes. The car currently has 99,000 miles on it and it has a broken window track, auotmatic lockup torque converter is stuck (makes a great grinding noise!), something is wrong with the electrical and the engines idles up and down, and the car locks it's doors when it feels like it.
was nice at start
bought car new in 92'. It works fine now because every part of the Quad 4 engine has been replaced. The computer chip has gone out, new engine, alternator, torque converter, etc... It's got about 140,000 miles on it now, and we're looking to buy a new car b/c the repairs are costing more than what it's worth!!
Good car, minus annoyances
I bought this car about 3 years ago, it had 160,000 miles on it. Since then, no real problems other than an oxygen sensor went on me. It runs fine, gets pretty good mileage, and is reliable. The only problem are small things, like it leaks water when it rains, coins easily fall into the lighter and blow fuses, the front passenger door stopped opening, and my rearview mirror fell off at one point. It's annoying stuff, but hey the car runs.
Won't give up
If you don't mind forking out $800 a year on maintenance you can keep it going for 235,000 or more. I commute (for 12 years) 28 miles each way (I know, I know, should move closer to work) & this car has never left me stranded (knock on wood. I drive in - 30 degrees F in the winter and have never had a problem. I guess I got lucky with this series of 4 cylinder engine. I run with synthetic oil. Hope it makes a difference. Engine burns no oil. Yes, be prepared to have your brakes replaced every couple of years or sooner.
Grand Am
Excellent vehicle. Has been reliable for over 7 years. Just now starting to give me problems. After 168000 miles, the transmission (original) is occasionally slipping. The radiator has developed a slight leak, and the power windows up front don't always work when you want them to. Engine is still purring like a kitten. Overall, a great buy. Many years of enjoyment and reliability.
Grand Am Gt
This is a great car! I enjoy the ride it provides, the low maitanence engine, and the air conditioning! I think that this 3.3 litre V6 is a great motor which should not be taken for granted!! I would suggest this car for people that want one heck of a car!!
Bad engine
It's a great car with an awful engine. The Quad 4 is infamously unreliable. Granted, it's a great engine when it's working, but since it's such a pain to work on, it gets expensive when something goes wrong. They're notorious for blowing head gaskets at around 120,000 miles. Mine is leaking, and it's currently at 130,000. It's about $1,100 if you just need a new head gasket, and about $2,400 if you need an all new head. Also, GM put iron rotors on the car, replace them with steel ones, and they'll be less likely to warp.
good ride
I just got this ride it is fun to drive and it is in really good shape.
Never buy a Grand am with the Quad 4
In april of 2003 I turned 16 I started to look for cars. When I finally found a nice car i got it. It was in great condition with 120,000 miles. It was a 1992 Pontiac Grand am SE with the crappy quad 4, which I didnt now about at the time. I had it registered for 2 weeks, then the headgasket blew. Then I found out it's going to cost $1100 to fix. They definitally should have had a recall on the quad 4. Its a nice car with a bad motor, there very unreliable. After I get it fixed it's going up for sale. So if you ever get a Grand am please do the smart thing and get the V-6 (Like my cousin did).
Bought it for $600.00
Saw an ad in the local Craigslist for a 1992 Grand Am Coupe, 5 speed, with the SOHC..had 126k original miles and was an original owner car, it needed interior and paint, and tires, ran well so the deal was made...have since redone the interior with black vinyl, redid the headliner, and had a MAACO $1000.00 paint job done in the original red...so now have about $2800.00 in it and am surprised with how it all came together! Had it up to 90mph on the freeway without any problem...so for less than 3k dollars, it seems to be a great little car...it has lasted 27 years so far, may last another 27!
