I know no one cares about this 15 year old car, but I own it . So far I;ve put 300,00 miles on my 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera with NO major problems. OK, the struts go out annually, it has an exhaust manifold leak, I replaced a radiator, power window motor, water pump (twice), alternator, stereo, and a few windshields. So what. The car fires up in -20 temps., gets over 26 mpg., and WORKS! The 3.3L V-6 engine w/4-speed OD tranny has to be one of the best combo's ever! This car is truly outstanding!

This car is truely the swiss army knife of cars. It has 8 seat belts, and the back seats fold forward to make a nice flat surface. you can slide a sheet of 4x8 plywood no problem, once I carried 13 sheets of sheet rock by removing some trim. I just drove back from cape cod to NJ and got 27.8 mpg. This car has 275,000 miles with the original transmission "tmh440". One problem, it's 20 years old. This review is for all the yuppies driving a $50,000 car that gets 12mpg. maybe these type of cars will come back in style?

Not the best looking, but reliable

I am a rural mail carrier for the postal service. We must provide our own vehicles and I have been through several in my 12 years. Cars like the Ford Taurus can't hold a candle to this Cutlass. I've bought 3 of them now. One was a wagon (the best one so far) and sold it when the A/C compressor went out at about 135K. The second one was a sedan and sold it at 120K when the computer wouldn't reset. The third was a '94 with the 3.3L V6. In my opinion this is the best engine you can get from Olds. Forget the 4 cylinder, this one has great power and reliability. The interior is spacious and comfortable. All the gadgets work, it rides smooth and can take a beating. I would recommend it.

Very dependable, low maintanence. Very good handling on the road and comfortable. Only problem is I had to replace three alternators over a 14 years of ownership. I am currently replacing with 156,000 miles + and if I could purchase the same vehicle today (new), I would not think twice about it.

I bought this car from my uncle, and it is the best thing ever. It's my frst car, but I give it a perfect 10 in every respect. For some reason, I was attracted to this from a Pontiac Firebird. I guess its because of the economy.

this is my 2nd cutlas and love it. i put an average of 40,000 miles on my car each year, and this one is still goin strong at almost 250,000. only problems i have had with this car are a small oil leak (no burning), the seam on the gas tank leaks, and problems with the struts (due to all the potholes and bad roads i drive on)and i'm looking forward to getting my gas milage back once i get the tank fixed (before the leak i was getting about 500 miles per tank on the highway)

I bought this car three years ago (with 150k miles) for $500, thinking it would last me a year or so. Three years (and three Western NY snow belt winters) later, this jalopy just keeps on going. The looks, ride quality, vibration, noise etc. are pretty bad but the basic powertrain is still solid. The 3.3 V6 and the tranny are in great shape - the acceleration is good (for a family sedan) and it still gives me 24 mpg on open roads (with zero oil burning), which really impresses me. I'm going to drive this thing till it falls apart!

We purchased a SL Ciera Wagon in 8/02 for another basic vehicle with better fuel economy. We also had a 99 Tahoe and 01 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT P/U. The Ciera wagon had 173000 miles on it when we purchased it, but was in excellent condition inside and out. It now has 194000 miles and is going strong. We are averaging 25 mpg and have had no problems. Not bad for $1000 dollars. The oil gets changed every 3500 miles with Quaker State Higher Milage oil. Compared to our other two vehicles, this one has already paid for itself in gas savings alone. Of course it doesn't have the luxury items the Tahoe has, but it is still the most used vehicle in our household.

Bought this thing with 82,000 miles on it for 1,700 dollars in 2003. I drive long distances for service work (fits my 6 foot ladder right in back) and other than a replaceing a wheel bearing at 188,000 miles and the starter at 212,000 miles, i havent done anything to it other than regular maintainance (breaks, hoses, spark plugs, oil changes, tires). i work on my own cars, so I figure this car costs me about what 1 car payment would per year ($250) plus gas of course.

Bought for 600 bucks and required a few fixes. Parts are extremely cheap and car is easy to maintain. It has a few occasional quirks but all in all a decent car. When I bought it, I replaced (with new parts). rotors, caliper, water pump, fuel pressure regulator, new exhaust system, spark plugs, tires, added a cd changer, and numerous other mechanical fixes to get it up to snuff and still have not (including sale) invested over 1K for the car.

I had this car for about 1.5 yrs. and it was ok. The dashboard started to come apart from the car which worried me, the air conditioning went out, costing about $1000 to fix and update, the back seat was uncomfortable and the trunk leaked a lot. The window cranks kept falling off the doors and the door handles started to seperate from the doors making it hard to open from the inside. The car was pretty much reliable but wouldn't own one again if it was given to me, there was just to much to fix on it.

The Cutlass Ciera that I owned was a 4 door with the 2.8L and auto trans. The A/C was great, and the car was peppy and fun to drive. Great gas mileage and room for my family of 5 (2 adults and 3 children under 10yrs). The major problem I had was a head gasket that popped out the side of the engine that would leak antifreeze. The seats were of poor quality and had to have pillows to support the back. The front bench seat was uncomfortable on long trips, and the dashboard was very loose and rattled on interstate trips.

It has been a very well built, reliable vehicle, that we drove for 145,000 miles of its 194,000. Only problems have been with occasional need to replace radiator, replaced cruise control, and some brake concerns, that were never a safety issue. At less than $7000, it was a fantastic buy for us. It wasn't washed enough so it has some rust issues.

My Grandfather bought the car brand new in 1990. After his death he handed the car down to my parents. Few years later I recieved the car. It has lasted 13 years in my family and there has been no major problems. the biggest repair that was done to it was merely new brakes, and that was just a few months ago. This car is always dependable, it hasn't failed 3 generations yet.

I bought this car for $600. Bought it because my girlfriend didnt want to buy a car so i bought a cheap one to replace the car i had sold her for the same price, which was also an olds cutlass ciera. Best investment i ever made, twice. Both were used and abused before i bought them and both just loved me because I have had only a few problems. always started. the biggest plus. used it while in my band and hauled equipment all the time with no signs of fatigue. even helped a buddy move, packed the car, 4 people and 1 baby, and most their belongings. able to drive 80,(tops off at 85) for 4 hours and 80 4 hrs back home straight with no signs of fade or pain.

I got this car at 42,000 miles from my Grandpa Angelo in '96, and the car has been running great since then(118K now). Very few problems with this car- had some fuel injector minor issues at 60K, and the thing has never really had great brakes. Motor mounts are starting to fade and just last week my driver's side front power window relay switch panel stopped working. Other than that, it has been a joy- couldn't ask for a more reliable car!

I have had the car for 1 year and 8 months now. I bought it with 80,000 miles on it in January of 2002. It currently has more than 112,500 miles and is still running in great order. It is more reliable than any other car I have owned(a 1993 Ford Taurus and a 1993 Dodge Shadow). I'd also recommend it over the Camry and Accord(I have friends with both of those cars and they have not been as satisfied as they hoped they would be).

A Car that Continues to Impress

Willie, 03/05/2007
1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera S 4dr Sedan
0 of 0 people found this review helpful

Where to begin...my parent bought the car in 1992 and gave it to me when I got my license at 96,000 miles. I have been driving it ever since. Now, at 211,000 miles, after 3-4 hail storms (the largest with hail the size of baseballs) and storm chasing, a deer running into me, this car just impresses everyone that has experienced it with me. The 3300 V6 and 3-speed auto transmission have given me surprising fuel economy as high as 31 mpg, and once with 18 during cold, city driving winters. I consistently get 25 mpg in a mix driving. I replaced exhaust, water pump, heater core, harmonic balancer all because of age, not defects. I have religiously performed basic maintenance and wear items were replaced. I need new window motors, but I can't complain for what it has done for me.

One radiator, one fuel line, one harmonic balancer, one front axle, and a radio that hated below 20* F weather. Front and rear shocks/struts once or twice. A couple of brake jobs. Drove car from when it had 106,000 miles until 332,000 miles. Wiring to vanity mirror lights was brittle and as well as wiring to driver door power window motor. Trusted every day commuting vehicle with a good amount (not great) of pulling power / torque. Overall 26 MPG on 33/33/33% city/rural/highway driving. Ended up getting several typical repair/maintenance issues converging upon inspection time so we retired the Ciera at that point.

We bought th wagon with 80,000 miles on it in 1998. Since then, we have driven it a huge amount and it has managed to withstand the beating. At 120,000, the original engine threw a rod in the cylinder, and we replaced the engine. The car hasn't always been kept up to date with oil changes and tune ups, but it still manages to run fairly well. Other than that, the main parts we've had to replace are the hoses, sparkplugs, the fan belt, and some wheels in the engine, and the muffler. It currently has 207,000 miles on it and is doing well.

Purchased at 100,000 miles. Had been well used, but maintained. Service engine light on, local GM dealer unable to provide a reasonable cost estimate. Rear brakes binding to drum, no holes in backing plate to loosen the shoes, needed to rip drum off of car, added to cost of repair. Driver's seat springs broken, have had other vehicle in excess of 200,000 without this problem. Power window wires all broken at bellows on L/F door. Common problem with GM cars. Expensive repair ($200).

This was a great car. With the 3.3 v6, this car had very nice acceleration. It was comfy inside, looked very nice. The outside looked nice, with only a little rust in a couple spots. It lasted a long time, until i got my 16 year old hands on it a year ago. I drove it until the transmission started having problems a couple weeks ago, then died completely, and i think that smashing the gas pedal to the floor all of the time took its toll. Other than that, it ran great, no engine problems, everything worked, except the inside drivers door handle, which for no apparent reason broke as soon as i pulled on it. With my driving, you'd imagine that my mpg wouldn't be great.
