Fun, fuel efficient, sporty. Sentra S Midnight pkg

Forget the previous review on size of tank. It is 13 gallons. We average 44 mpg on interstate and 33 around town. Do the math. Bought with midnight sport package. Wife loves it. As for tall I am 6’1 with long legs , I can sit in back seat and not bang my head. Tried Corollas and others...nada. The pump to raise and lower seat is interesting but it works. We do best eco mode on interstate. Switch when you need more power. Wife’s iPhone and my iPad connects easily. Don’t get the dinky cheaper radio. We got the full screen with rear camera. Dealers tried to sell us a makeshift one on others. Getting used to the cvt. It all comes down to perspective.

We bought this car cause we were in a bind and needed a second vehicle. Makes sure you have decent credit or you be stuck with the car value is only 13k on the car and we owe 21k we purchased this in May of 2018. There decent cars but not made for tall people at all and the paint is chipping in several places.

Engine died while driving

KeithW, 09/09/2019
2018 Nissan Sentra SV 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl CVT)

I was driving a 2018 Sentra with 18,190 miles on it when this happened. I was driving on the downtown main street going at 10~20mph with frequent stops due to heavy traffic. The engine decided to shut down while I'm still driving, of which I'm so glad of the speed I was driving at that time, otherwise, it would be a lot worse than just honk from the cars behind, I could be in a fatal accident. Having to rush to the court, I had to drive an hour to the court with this known issue with lots of anxiety. I got the car exchanged at the rental car company after attending the court and was talking to an old lady who had five Sentra in her life. She was complaining about newer Sentra (after 2012 or so), she also mentioned her daughter's Sentra wheel was locked while driving on the freeway and had to spend three thousand dollars to fix it. I am seriously playing safe to avoid Sentra at all cost. I'm surprised that there aren't that many complaints about this car as well.

I have been driving 2016 Corolla but another family member is driving it..we decided on a 2018 Sentra SV...the interior of Sentra is so much more roomier than Corolla...we are very pleased with Sentra..we are tall folks and the head and leg room is excellent in the Sentra

Cures most of the ills of the non-turbo Sentra

2018 Nissan Sentra SR TURBO 4dr Sedan (1.6L 4cyl Turbo CVT)

About 8 years ago I leased a 2010 Sentra at the request of my wife, who was in love with the basketball color leather seats. It was the lamest car I ever owned (slow, no style, low tech even for then). Forward to 2018, when it came time to turn in my leased 2016 Jetta Sport for a new compact car. We tested the usual suspects: 2018 Honda Civic Turbo, 2018 Mazda3, 2019 Jetta. The Civic was by far the best car, but Honda dealers believe that their cars are made of gold, with diamond accents (first quote for basic turbo sedan, no money down, was $580.00 per month!) so the Honda was eliminated. The Mazda3 was a nice car (I had previously leased THIRTEEN Mazdas over 20 years, so I'm a fan) but didn't really feel impressed. The 2019 Jetta was nicely done, but the weak engine was a turn off. Finally, we went to our local Nissan dealer where we leased a 2017 Maxima (great car) at a fantastic price. My wife again suggested a Sentra, except this time the SR Turbo. A winner! Fast, comfortable, good looking, handles well, fully loaded (premium package with CVT) and much less expensive than all the others.

We bought our first Nissan yesterday, after a lot of research; my wife thought she wanted a VW Jetta, but decided it was too big. We looked at the Honda Civic, but like the other guy said, Honda thinks their cars are made out of gold. I have a friend that put 260K miles on a 1999 Maxima, and another 200K on a 2000 Altima, so I feel pretty confident going with Nissan. My wife loves her new car! And with our $6000 trade-in value, we came out with no down payment, and only financing $9000.....that comes to $187/month with 0% APR. I'm looking forward to driving it myself - I've only ridden shotgun, but it felt tight and composed for an economy car. Our sales woman (22 year old girl) knew her stuff, and was well-versed in car sales; she did what we asked of her, and didn't push more on us than we initially discussed. My wife's demands were automatic transmission, CD player, and backup camera. We've now had this car just short of two years. The gas tank is too small, so fill ups come often, the tires wore out at 25K miles, our dealership - where we get service through their "plan" - seems like they always find something that needs attention when we go in for a "free" oil change. So far, it has needed a four-wheel alignment, brake flush, fuel injection service, two air filters, windshield wipers, cabin filters; you name it, they think it needs replacing. Oh, and the battery already had to be replaced. And they wanted to service the CVT; the service advisor (different dealership) said the fluid in a CVT is sticky, and should be replaced every 25K miles. Funny, they only upsell the wonderful CVT, but don't mention it's pitfalls. It's my wife's car, so I drive it only occassionally, but it seems like Nissan treats it like it's a fine automobile that needs constant tuning (think Jaguar of seventies vintage).....IT'S A SENTRA - we bought it new for $13,999! Personally, I'm disappointed: I can't see me buying a Nissan ever again. Update 2 - we've now had it 2 1/2 years. After changing dealerships for service, I'm enjoying the Nissan experience much more. We pay monthly for unlimited car washes, and my wife's Sentra gets washed about three times a week (her nephew loves it) and the finish is as good as new. Honestly, it's a nice little car. It now has 43000 miles, and runs as good, or better than new. As I stated above, it was the dealership service that had me disliking Nissan; the car itself is quite pleasant. Update at 3 year's ownership: Car now has 50K miles. It runs good, is comfortable on long drives, and gets excellent mpg. Like I said above, it was the dealership that made my Nissan experience terrible - it's a great [not so] little car.

Poor Quality in a Nice Looking Package

JB, 01/14/2019

I have owned this car brand new since February of 2017. So far, the passenger rear window switch has broken 3 times and now there is a metal-on-metal sound under the front passenger side of the car when hitting bumps. The warranty is only 3/36k and the car began to fall apart immediately. It takes full synthetic oil, making oil changes expensive. The gas tank is 10 gallons, so you'll be stopping often. I am now way upside down on the car and having to decide whether to take the hit by trading it in or repairing it. Literally any other car would be a better investment.

Is a great car with a good mpg. But, since I bought my car I had to deal with a few problems. First, the plastic that goes from the dashboard to the roof of the car feel off. Then my front sensor got bad. Now I’m experiencing a TPMS problem and the bluetooth does not work.

Worst car I've ever driven

I purchased a 2018 Sentra SV new and it didn't even make it to 60,000 miles. I don't drive irresponsibly, I don't floor it, and I certainly wasn't playing with the shifter while driving, but my transmission blew out at around 58,000 miles (I believe it was something like 57,240 or 57,260 miles) which is shameful for a new car. The transmission wasn't even the first part to break! My fuel pump went out at 22,000 miles! It was a sign of worse things to come. I was wooed by a 2018 Sentra SR that I rented while having my 2010 Ford Fusion serviced and chose the SV due to a lack of availability in my area. Bad choice! If I had known then what I knew now I would've bought a Kia Optima new instead. If you're going to buy it, at least get it with a manual transmission instead of the horribly unreliable CVT.

Worst car ever

I bought 2018 Sentra brand new with 10 miles on it. Within the first month, it had to have the brake starting sensor replaced twice as it left me stranded with children. It has been replaced two more times since and still doesn’t work correctly. The front radar has been giving me error codes since I drove it off the lot. The tachometer jumps and jerks when I drive on the highway and will not allow the car to accelerate. I now have two malfunction warnings from the radar and after two minutes of driving it starts making this horrible ringing noise and won’t stop until you turn the car off. It it happens every time you drive the car. The AEB light has been on the dash for several weeks as well. Let’s not even get started on gas mileage. A complete fill up says I will get about 400 miles, I had to start tracking g the mileage, bc I would barely get 200 to a full tank. Worst vehicle ever bought. It makes a horrible clunking noise when shifted out of park. Definitely do not recommend. I will never purchase another Nissan. My previous Rogue has major transmission issues, didn’t think that it would carry on into a newer vehicle.

Think twice before purchasing the NIssan CVT

Jim, 12/30/2018
2018 Nissan Sentra S 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl CVT)
17 of 26 people found this review helpful

Buying a car these days is costly. To ease some of the pain it helps to have decent resale value down the road. You won't get that with Nissan's CVT transmission so think twice before purchasing. Our 2007 Nissan Sentra has just 69,000 miles on it and the transmission is bad. You can't repair the CVT. You must get a factory rebuild or one of unknown quality from a junk yard. The cost of a new transmission at the dealership is a whopping $3,900. To but that in perspective, a rebuild on a Chevy Tahoe runs around $1,500-$1,800. The book value on this car is $3,500 so it makes no sense to put in a $3,900 transmission. Nissan knows they have an issue with their CVT's. They extended the warranty to 60,000 miles but we are at 69,000. Madison at consumer affairs in Tennessee enthusiastically states how much Nissan values your business and how they understand how frustrating it must be to have such a major failure of a vehicle at the same time as cheerfully denying your claim. So unless you wan't a "DISPOSABLE" car that requires a transmission which cost a full 25% of the full purchase price stay away from NISSAN and NISSAN Variable Transmission (CVT).

Definitely not second to its competition

CG, 02/10/2020

Ok, I rented a Sentra for three days. For its class, it beat Hyundai Accent, Elantra, corolla, and Chevy Cruz, the others I’ve also rented. I’ve also driven the mazda3, I don’t know about Honda Civic or Subaru Impreza, except all Honda’s I’ve driven are simply rough riding and little else. I’ve driven Subaru SUVs, and nothing to write about comfort or handling there. The corolla, like all lower end Toyota’s is simply rough riding, loud cabin noise, with unimpressive cornering and handling. The Accent was rough riding, noisy cabin with lack luster steering and handling. The Elantra was a more comfortable ride, and worthy handling, but it simply could not speed up on the highway when it needed for passing or if you needed a bit more go. The Cruz wasn’t a bad ride, but the Japanese cars beat GM steering and handling all day. The mazda3 is the most fun of all to drive in it’s class, the nice responsive Japanese cornering and handling, but this Sentra is competitive too, with the days of yesteryear responsive cornering and handling of Nissan brought back, a comfortable ride, quieter cabin like a pricier sedan, don’t feel vibrations or the road like the Accent, corolla, and RAV4. This Sentra had plenty of acceleration, for a 1.8L and beat all the above. I did not feel threatened on the highway. In short, I liked it best of all, amazing comfort and performance for that class of car! What holds me back from buying, is Nissan has not been made in Japan for quite some time and the QA will suffer. I can imagine problems galore. Nissan has fallen from grace due to its corporate leaders, and The CVT is not my preference either, even if this Sentra ran fine for the brief time I was in it. I owned a 90s era Maxima and Infiniti with indomitable power trains, a combination of both comfort and performance, lost in the modern blend of today’s low profile rough ride tires , smaller engines, and CVTs unreliability. The little Sentra does bring back a bit of the nostalgic ride of its forerunners showing me Nissan still has what it takes to be a leader. I’ve missed them!

What was Nissan thinking

Steve, 09/19/2022

I’ve driven many of these Sentra’s on road trips unfortunately and I’ve got to say it’s probably one of the worst cars made within the last 10 years. It’s noisy, slow and extremely uncomfortable. The fuel mileage isn’t great for being a small sedan. The CVT is awful. Interior is cheap, heated seats don’t do anything. Sound system is garbage. Need to overtake someone? Better plan ahead and make sure you have a massive passing zone. I would own or drive any vehicle besides this generation Sentra. I currently own a 2009 and it’s much nicer, much more solid feeling and has comfortable seats. I’m trying to think of things I like about the 18’ Sentra. It has the Nissan 370Z steering wheel, and the armrests have lots of padding. That’s it. Seriously guys, if anyone is considering one of these DON’T. Mazda 3, Honda Civic, Corolla, Jetta, Forte & Cruze are all much nicer vehicles and don’t suffer from transmission issues.

Make sure you get what your paying for...im use to a jeep and this is so compact that I feel like I'm on the ground. I wanted a SUV or pick up but this Nissan sentra was what I was offers with no say so. Don't get me wrong I give thumbs up for this car if you like small cars.im a big guy they should have suggested a bigger vehicle and for what I pay ...i should of been more demanding on what I want. But I hope I could refinance and never missing a payment I should get my pick up..but the car is great.

While my daily driver (2016 Mini Cooper S with 6-speed manual) was in the shop for body work, I had the great misfortune of getting a CVT-equipped 2018 Sentra as a rental. If you're used to a responsive car, this thing is utterly infuriating. It's hard to say what its worst feature is. The slow, numb steering? The pitching, wallowing ride? The gutless engine? The buzzy CVT? Or maybe it's the absurdly bass-heavy sound system that causes all the flimsy interior plastics to vibrate? Do not drive one of these things if you're in a bad mood -- you'll want to drive it into a phone pole to put it out of its misery.

I have leased three Nissan Sentra SR's. 2013, 2015 and this 2018. All were made in Mexico.I bought out the lease of this car in Nov. 2021 with 30,000 miles. All three have had the premium package. All three have been good cars, with few problems. Granted the first two were turned in to Nissan with less than 36,000 miles. I take care of my cars but really nothing out of the ordinary has happened. My current 2018 did require a new battery at 3 yrs. That was premature, but I live in florida and heat kills a battery. Pluses are - nice styling, good fit and finish, great gas mileage (40+ highway running air conditioner), quiet, smooth ride, large interior and trunk, doesn't break. Negatives are - small gas tank, squeaky rear brakes (all three vehicles), possible CVT transmission issues. I was part of a class action suit regarding CVT failures. Nissan extended an 8 yr, 80,000 warranty to me as compensation. It's important to follow Nissan's recommended transmission fluid changes to prolong transmission life. I just had my fluid and external paper filter replaced at 45,000 miles to avoid future failures. Be sure to replace the filter. Three dealers stated it didn't have a filter, it does. I'd buy or lease another one.

Bought a 2018 Sentra SV with 22k mi in March of '21. Has more room than the 2000 Civic I had. Not a bad riding car either. Could use a little more ooomph on the engine. In the 3.5 yrs of ownership the only high cost repair item was an electronic sensor. Everything else is regular maintenance. No issues with the transmission. Just perform the maintenance.

I knew I should’ve got a ford but went with a used 2018 Nissan Sentra SV and it did have high mileage around 90k. It hasn’t even reached 20k miles and the transmission is slipping! There should be a recall and new transmission replaced for free. I still have car loan and they want almost $6,000 to fix it when the car is only worth around $9,000 if that since you can’t drive it. I will never purchase another Nissan and I’ll let everyone know the problems. My brother also got a Nissan truck and it has already broke. Whatever you do don’t buy a Nissan!!
