I love this vehicle! 2003 Pathfinder

I can't say enough good things about my Pathfinder. I purchased this vehicle two years ago and it has been one of the best economy SUVs I have ever driven, and despite the hell I've given her, she has treated me spectacularly. It's certainly not the nicest, nor does it have a lot of bells and whistles, but it has grown on me in a way no way any other vehicle has. I got lucky, and after totaling my last vehicle, a family friend sold this car to me for practically nothing. It currently has 278,000 miles (yes, two hundred thousand), but boy, did this engine get taken care of. No out of the norm replacements engine-wise and the transmission is insanely smooth. No strange sounds or weird misfires, just the sweet sound of 6-cylinders combusting fuel. I have had one major repair since I bought the vehicle, but at this mileage, I can't complain. (it was the fuel pump, not very expensive) The engine is POWERFUL for the mileage. When I say for the mileage, really, just in general, this car is pleasant to drive. This engine gets up and goes with a 3.5 V6. I absolutely admire the acceleration! I ride to work every day on the interstate going 85mph, and it has no problem getting up to high speeds. It barely fights me to even surpass 100mph, and for an SUV with this mileage, that is wonderful. It handles marvelously, and sometimes I forget that I'm even driving such an old vehicle. Quiet interior, well-kept. I love that the seats in the back fold down for extra cargo space. Slap some blankets down in the back and its great for camping. It's not the roomiest vehicle in the world, but it gets the job done, and has never left me stranded or worried that something may break. I have taken several road trips that attest to its reliability, and it never runs hot even when being driven for 4+ hours. On the same note, I had a venture 1 year ago involving getting it stuck knee deep in water and mud, water in the cabin, and I have had no issues following the incident. (except a cumbersome mildew smell for a few weeks...) In fact, we pulled her out and went right back to mudding afterward. My only complaint would be poor exterior paint quality. The paint is tremendously faded, and it chips very easily. The MPG may also be a deal breaker for some, as I average about 12-13 MPG. However, I have test driven a lot of new vehicles recently, and haven't quite found a rugged SUV with the smoothness and power that this vehicle offers. I test drove a 2016 Toyota 4Runner, and I was honestly disappointed with the lack of power and ride quality that it provided. (dashboard MPG was reading at about 12 MPG on the interstate on top of that) In all honesty, I may keep this vehicle and just restore the paint and add some aftermarket features. Ultimately, I would recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a used vehicle with an excellent ride. If me assigning my car a gender in any way attests to the fact that this vehicle will grow on you, I have done my job here. Kudos to Nissan for manufacturing such a great vehicle, I sure wish the market would return to the SUV glory days. Pro Tip: fill her up with premium gas and you will see a huge difference.

Purchased used from a work aquaintance in 2006 with only 17,000 miles. Now has 58,000. So far, so good. Same issues, CD skips when cold, leather around seat adjusters cracked a bit, heat shield rattle, evap leak - check engine light has been on for about 4 years now. For those with same issue, I would try a new gas cap for a potential fix. Also, use Maguire's leather treatment - works great & eliminates the golden retriever smell. Had new oil pan, etc. installed in December 2011 for about $1,000. So far cost of ownership is as expected - we live in Vermont & the winters are brutal on vehicles.

I've always been a Nissan Pathfinder fan, till now ( I hate the new body style) I've owned my 2003 for 5 years now. I live in Utah and it's the best 4 wheel drive I've owned. I've had a 1989, 1990, 1997 pathfinders and now the 2003. I have never had it strand me or had any expensive repairs. I do all the recommended maintenances though. The gas mileage would be my only "con" but I wouldn't trade better gas mileage for the power it has. I do love the power and control this car provides. I think for the money this is a solid, reliable, well built car. I see lots of 2003 Nissan Pathfinders with over 200,000 miles. I think that says a lot.

I purchased my 03 pathfinder a year after the new body style came out. At the time I didn't need the 3rd row seat but now wish I purchased that instead. shortly after purchasing I brought it back in because I had a heat shield loose and exhaust leak. My service engine light is always on, I have it shut off and after driving anywhere from 60-200 miles it turns back on because an evap leak. I recently had a smoke machine hooked up to it and was able to find the leak near the gas tank. I have removed almost all the heat shields and replaced my muffler twice and had it fixed once.

I've always loved the pathfinders since seeing the first one back in the late 80's. my wife and i needed an suv but without the nightmares we had when we owned a jeep. We purchased a 2003 SE with 54K on it. As of today 5/25/11, it has 124,000 miles on it. Gas mileage SUCKS. i'd be lucky to get 17mpg mixed overall, but the vehicle weights over 5000 lbs. Aside form routine maintenance, and a few ware/tare part replacements, the vehicle has been a sound performer. It's not big, but its comfortable to drive. It's been through hell and back the past 4 years, but it keeps on ticking.

Great first truck for a new driver

My son's first car (truck). Paid $3500 for this well maintained LE with 4x4 having 119k miles. He wanted a 4 Runner or Cherokee, but they are almost double for a nice one. It performs well: powerful, shifts smooth and is quite comfortable having leather and a sunroof. Now after 1 year and 130k miles it's done well with only about $300 spent to keep in good running condition. This includes replacing the rear suspension for just $140 (Amazon + our labor) and a few dollars for oil, minor parts and a couple of sensors. He lifted it 2 inches along with new AT tires, but this is a separate cost. I like that it has front and side air bags for safety. It does have a minor RMS leak, but so did all five of the others that we looked at. This is almost a given for most vehicles this old. It will cost >$600 to fix, so we are putting it off. MPG is 17, this is ~80% highway, about as advertised and expected. Oh, if you are looking to buy any of this generation (R50) be sure to look for rust in the front wheel wells as this has been a big problem in areas using road salt. If you see any rust, best to pass on it. Update: now at 139k miles. Everything is still good. Spent about $300 more on repairs ($600 total in 20k miles) on a new starter and front axle shafts. The boots on the shafts failed, but this is probably due to the lift. Still has the RMS leak, but we've been catching the drips in a rag that we replace every 2-3 weeks. A great first vehicle for an active kid, except for the poor gas mileage. Update: now at 147k miles. Still runs strong and reliable. Just oil changes and we replaced the front brake pads.

I bought my '03 Pathfinder in Aug '05 and ever since it's been wonderful. Yeah, the gas mileage isn't anywhere near a hybrid --but if that's what you're looking for then buy a Civic. But my Pathfinder is great!! I've never had any mechanical problems. The only problem I had was with the heat shields. They became rusted and was removed, but that's what I get for living in Chicago. Let me tell you, I absolutely HATE driving in the snow, but the 4WD helps a lot. I love the bose, heated seats, 6CD changer, programmable driver's seat, & everything else! My boyfriend was mad because I made the decision of buying this car without him, but he (being the car guy he is) even admits it was worth it!!

I originally had a used 2000 Pathfinder and put over 170K miles on it and never had a problem with it. I traded it in (only because I wanted something newer and sportier) on a 2004 Maxima which turned out to be a piece of crap car! I went back to a Pathfinder this time buying a used 2003 Pathfinder and love it so far. The only real issue so far has been a cosmetic one; I believe the paint quality is poor. Keep in mind it has 130k on it but I've never had a vehicle's paint chip like this one does. Besides that, I have no complaints other than of course the sh-tty gas mileage but fortunately it does not require premium unleaded.

Bought new in sep'03 and have 120,000 miles. Comfortable, dependable, good power. Replaced one front wheel bearing, battery, brakes at 60,000 miles. Dealer fixed catalytic converter at 70,000 miles under warranty. Replaced front struts, shocks at 110,000 miles and belts at 50,000 and 100,000 miles. Original bridgestone tires replaced at 35,000 miles. Went to Michelin and replaced them at 105,000 miles with Michelin. Get 19 mpg driving from stop-and-go to 80 mph every day to work (40 miles each way). Cd skips when cold. Driver seat leather getting rips near controls. Steering wheel radio controls are becoming finicky. Cup holder lid hinges.Towed trailers on several 2000 mile trips

I drive my cars til they die. I'm 50 years old and this is my favorite vehicle. Whether driving around town, going skiing or heading out camping this is the best rig. Of course I wish it got 25 MPG, but I'll settle for 19- 20. Seats are great. Hate the 2006+ models..uncomfortable. Powerful engine. I've had it five years, drive 25k per year and very few issues.

When it came time for our family to buy an SUV, we looked at all of the options. We narrowed our choices to the Lexus RX300, Acura MDX,Infiniti QX4, and the Pathfinder. All had similar engines and cargo space, so my decision was based on reliability and value. The Pathfinder had all of the options that the competition had, except for the MDX's 3rd seat. I interviewed other owner's and they both had many great things to say of the Pathfinder. However, they had the older engine that wasn't up to the task of the mountain passes here in Colorado. Nissan has fixed that with the new 3.5L VQ engine that makes 240 hp.

Owned a previous model 98 same problems as with new. At 75,000 replace exhaust. At 78k front wheel bearings and belts. Good in the snow, cramped seats in the back. Overall never left me strangled anywhere but keep in mind check engine light will come on once you hit 75k Evap system leak just like my old one. Nissan just cant get that system right. Gr8 for carrying stuff from home depot (sheet rock, plywood etc...) not the best for long trips as seats are not comfortable especially in the back. I don't know how those people are claiming to average 24 mpg hwy and 20 city the best I manage is 12 mpg city and 17 mpg hwy. Transmission is going at 84k and front suspension needs work again.

The day I picked up the Pathfinder I experienced a stalling/idling problem. The problem continued to get worse and the first time I used it on the highway, the vehicle would not upshift forcing the engine to redline at 65 mph. The dealer made $1500 worth of torque converter warranty repairs. The parts took a month to come in and the vehicle was completely unreliable to drive. This appears to be fixed now but the windshield stress cracked at 6 mos due to improper installation. I enjoy driving this Pathfinder I am very concerned about its long term reliability. I have another 30 months on my lease and that scares me.

97' SE to a 03' LE. The added horsepower is great. Truck is 2 weeks and it needs a new power sunroof motor. Otherwise, the overall design and features of the LE model are well worth the price, invoice that is. Gas mileage could use some improvement but it's an SUV what did you expect. Our final decision came down to the Pathfinder vs. the Lincoln Aviator. The Aviator had all the bells and whistle's, but it's still a Ford product and resale value compared to a Nissan will make you realize that eventually. I would definitely recommend this truck if you are looking for a reliable vehicle that's fun to drive and holds it's value.

Poor quality, lousy/noisy brakes, stereo broken from start - replaced 4 times! Poughkeepsie Nissan is the worst dealer around. The front bumber was damaged & poorly repainted prior to taking delivery, dealer denied responsibility and refused to fix damage. Seeking legal help to get a full refund. Nissan customer support offers no help. If you still want a Pathfinder stay away from this dealership.

Other than a minor negative experience with the dealership (who hasn't had one of those?), I absolutely adore my Pathfinder. I bought it brand new, even though my logical side was telling me not to take the big financial hit when I drove it off the lot simply because I loved it so much, I couldn't stomach the idea of having one that was pre-owned. It's been a wonderful addition to our family so far.

Since the deals are so good out there right now, I looked into buying a new SUV to replace my 1996 Ford Explorer. I test drove the Highlander, Explorer, Tribute, 4 Runner and Xterra before deciding on the 2003 Pathfinder. This vehicle isn't perfect, but it's a very nice combination of reliability, price, styling, handling and features. It rode better than any vehicle except perhaps the Highlander, but I found it more comfortable (no captain's chair's arms) and with many more small nice features such as lighted vanity mirrors, fog lights, compass and opening rear window. My model is loaded, mainly due to the Nissan packages required to get side airbags.

I go to the beach a lot and it has no problems traversing heavy, loose sand. Interior build quality is excellant....no "cheapo" feel here. Folding the rear seats is simple...who said it was difficult???

My 1990 Pathfinder is a stick shift with 225,000 miles. I had taken very good care of it and had just replaced the A/C and timeing belt. I thought it could go at least another 100,000miles but I really was getting tired of the stick shift so I finally decided to let my son have it and get another car. I got another Pathfinder, 2003 4WD SE, cloth seats, Popular Package. This car is absolutly superb in everyway. The comfort level is outstanding. The performance is fabulous. I can't say enough about this car!!!

I currently own a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder SE. It's RWD/4WD and I have absolutely no complaints in terms of performance. It's pretty comfortable for a truck. Haven't had many issues for storage. It has some pretty good features in it for an 03. HOWEVER, I've had this truck for 4 years and I've spent almost as much in maintainence as I spent purchasing it. The biggest problem is the 3-speed automatic trans. It stopped shifting past 2nd gear about a year after I got it. So I bought a brand new, $800, trans for it and now it barely shifts and it won't go in reverse. I'm not saying all Nissans are crap, but all they're Pathfinder models don't seem to be worth it.

So my toddler is bleeding from the head and we are on the way to the emergency room in my bronze Nissan Pathfinder. As we pass a silver Infiniti QX4 he points out of the window and says "Daddy's car." Now if even a concussed two year old can see through the exterior shiny trim of a QX4 that hides the Pathfinder beneath, where's the snob value in buying the Infiniti? Buy a Pathfinder and save yourself $5,000. By the way, he's fine...

This is vehicle steeped in its own tradition, one that has ebbed and flowed stylistically and mechanically with the various SUV trends. Simply put, it is a very well-built, reliable vehicle that has had a few sputters along the way - in 03-04 it was a bit of an identity crisis, with two main flaws: poor fuel economy and bad rear seating. However, it makes up for it with excellence in other areas. Recently I passed a semi-truck on a snowy road at 120km/hr, something I just wouldn't do with every vehicle - it's got plenty of zip, traction, overall quality. Just think twice about how much that back-seat is used by adult passengers, and be willing to pay 20% more for gas than a car.

This is by far the best mid-size SUV on the market. I drove them all, and the Pathfinder has the most bang for the buck, great acceleration, and decent towing capabilities. The back seat could offer a bit more room, but it will be fine for 2 full size adults.

Replaced a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, there is no comparison. The Pathfinder rides and performs better than the Jeep and the reliability is no contest. I would recommend this truck to anyone. The ride is more like a Maxima than a truck.

This is my 4'th SUV and By far my favorite. Driven a 4runner, wrangler, and 2 Grand Cherokees and none of these even comes close to how much I enjoy driving this Pathfinder. Just wish that I had test drove one sooner. Also able to knock $4800.00 off of the sticker.

This has been by far and away the best vehicle I've ever owned. Fast, sturdy and air tight..I honestly do not have one squeak. The families growing so I'm looking forward to a fullsize SUV from Nissan (rumored anyway).

If you haven't yet driven a Pathfinder you are missing out. The vehicle has excellent power, is very comfortable, etc... The 100+ Watt BOSE stereo system is amazing. After I installed a small subwoofer, I was blown away by how great it sounded. The gas mileage sucks although. I only get about 15 MPG on average.

The 2003 Pathfinder LE has the BEST styling of any PF ever built.( Now Nissan is going to change it!) It is also a safe vehicle since you are surrounded by air bags and side curtains. Good visibility. Drivetrain (2wd)offers power and reasonable mpg. The PF feels car-like in a parking-lot. An enjoyable vehicle to drive!

I bought this LE 4x4 sept 2002. It is a great suv. Everything is perfect, except the interior could have l'il more spacious (just a little, not as bulky as Acura MDX. The leather seats are great (even the smell of it), sound system is superb, handling and driving is fun. The engine was quite quiet, but after 4weeks I noticed the it has become noisy and screams like a u-haul truck. Not sure if this is standard or I should take it to service...

My job is seling cars on-line. When it came to buying my next car, I did the research. Checked out all the 30K-40K SUV's available. When the research was over, the 2003 Pathfinder won hands down.

I had done alot of research before purchasing my 2003 LE and all signs pointed to it being the best SUV in it's class. After one test drive I was hooked. The interior is extremely classy w/ heated leather seats, 6 disc in dash cd player and climate control. The audio controls on the driver steering wheel are extremely appreciated. It also has reclining back seats which will have all my friends wanting to take long trips in my car. The pickup on this vehicle is amazing. It handles bumpy roads and turns with graceful ease. Outside noise is also very limited.

This is a great vehicle that is hampered by some annoying flaws. It's powerful engine and rugged off road capability make it fun to drive. Highway driving is decent and the gas mileage is about as good as one would expect. The exterior styling of this model is perfect and it's a shame that the newer models changed this. The interior is spacious and relatively comfortable. My two main complaints are the stock tires and the in-dash stereo. The tires offer terrible traction particularly in poor weather conditions and need to be replaced. The CD player is useless and was obviously made with a cheap laser which constantly skips.

Fun to drive and practical at the same time. Best bang for your money. If you are looking for a status symbol get an X5. If you are looking for something economical, practical and still fun to drive. I love mine.

the edmunds research was dead on. we test drove all the mid-size suv's on the market. this one beats them all in design, quality, ride, sound system, braking, acceleration, reliability, comfort - you name it. don't bother with anything else. this is a truck you will be able to drive for a long long time.
