It grows on you
I bought this car from the dealership my brother works for. He found and researched it for me, decided it was a decent choice for my current situation. Thank you bro! It's already payed for itself in more ways than one. Great buy for the money and reliable as can can be. No problems so far other than the check engine light (duh, check everything and if nothing's wrong ignore it, it's just a new light on your dash) great gas mileage, decent handling, gets through snow awesome for some reason (have a 5- speed) and can do a 1 turn on a one way street (or side walk) get it? Don't feel wronged if you purchase one. Just check your fluids and you'll be fine, just like any maintenance car work.
98 tracer
over 200,000 miles still going strong
195,000 as still going
This has been a great car. It has great mileage. It is easy to service. It handles well in snow.
Great Car
My girlfriend bought it on her own. I was very impressed from the beginning. She gave it to me after 3 years when she bought a Toyota Corolla as the Tracer was no longer available. The interior and exterior still look almost brand new. 5 speed manual. 28 MPG once, 45 MPG once, 34 to 37 in town. I get 39mpg at 75 to 85 MPH w/AC on the Hwy. 170000+ miles. The repairs have been power steering hose, recommended timing belt replacement and recently the alternator. Oh After we had the car 1 day the r headlamp receptacal had to be replaced, and replaced 2 more times. The headlight housings started turning opaque after the first year. Would like station wagon w/5 speed manual.
It's been my baby
This was also my first car...I've had it for about four years now. I agree with all of the other positive reviews. This car has been almost totally reliable and have had few and far fetched problems with it. Overall its been a great car!
Love my little car
My car was a demo when we bought it. It has been a very good car and I plan on keeping it till the wheels fall off. It's fun to drive, and it has enough of power underneath the hood that I can have some fun with it. It has been a tough little car and as long as it gets me where I need to go then I will continue driving it.
100,000 and still going strong!
i have owned 5 cars before, and this tracer is my first american car, i was a bit doubtful when my friend told me that this was a very reliable car, so i did some research and he was right! JD Powers and MSN both say the same thing! this baby just keeps going! the only major repair i've done is a $30 outer tire rod replacement plus installation.
ugh, this car
Ok, i've had this car for a few years now, engine wise, short of alternator and serpentine belt, no problem. Gets good mileage on highway, starts when ye need it to, maybe a little grumpy about it in the winter, but starts. body wise, problem problem problem, to the point of safety issue, and i mean brakes. My emergency brake gets fixed (at different garages) a couple times a year, it hangs up, locks the tire, breaks, etc. Most recently my other brakes froze up, causing yet another expensive repair. If you have a thousand a year to spare to keep this car in safe running condition, go for it.

This is a excellent Car.
1998 tracer wagon 5spd
I bought this 1998 Tracer Wagon new in 1998. It has been one of the most economical cars I have owned. It had a few items fixed under warranty. The only non warrantee items I have fixed are the PCV valve and hose, an alternator and some normal maintenance items such as plugs, shocks, tires 1 set of brakes. The car now has 180K miles and still runs strong. It burns no oil, and still has the original clutch. It never got less than 30 MPG, it would average 33 and occasionally would get 40 mpg if you drove a whole tank at 55 mph. I would still be driving the car but a large tree fell on it. I did jack the roof back up and put a back hatch on it and my daughter still drives it. The only complaint I had with it was the cabin noise was a little high, but not any more than any of the other cars in its price range. It was a great car and I was sad to see it go. I bought an 2006 Infiniti G35 to replace it and while it is a fine car, I have spent more on maintenance on it in one year that I did the 12 years I owned the Tracer.
Not a quality vehicle
I bought my Tracer used with 75k on the clock in excellent mechanical/physical condition confirmed by a trusted shop. By 96k the car was dead and I'm far from an aggressive driver nor do I abuse my vehicles. A/C went at 78k as did the Idle Air Valve, timing belt went at 83k, tie rods went at 94k etc! This was with me ensuring regular maintenance, oil/lube, tire rotations the whole lot. In the end what killed this car and my wallet along the way was build quality and bad engineering. The final nail in the coffin for this car was when it dropped a valve seat which apparently they like to do around 100k due to "an engineering defect". Thanks Ford this is now why I drive a Nissan! :-)
Good Car
Great car with great gas mileage. I have only 27,00 miles on it, and its still going strong. Only minor repairs needed, as standard maintenance.
Tracers are Good
I have had my Tracer LS Sport for nearly a year, and I have no problems with it. It performs well enough for a car that isn't supposed to perform well. It gets me where I want to go, and does a good job of it.
Great Dependable Transportation
My family has owned this car since 1998. first my dad, then my sister. It has always been dependable, economic transportation. nothing fancy, but very good on gas, very easy to maintain and with few repairs over eighteen years.

Just Right
I just bought my third Tracer. Obviously, I love these fun to drive, , get great gas mileage and reasonable to maintain, autos. I bought a 1998 with 68000 miles. In the last four years, I've driven a Fiesta and owned Sable. Truly a case of too small, too big. Back in "Just Right." Also, I love Mercs. With the cancelation of the line, I will give diligent attention to my Tracer. Maybe drive into the sunset....

OK
I bought this as a used car. The sensor is going on it which makes it really frustrating. It was very nice until the engine light came on and the sensor was the issue. Seems the sensor thing is an ongoing issue for most owners. I have 1 child and we need something reliable. Hope it all works out with a good mechanic.
pepsifancar
great car love to drive it good gas mileage!
a lot of car for the money
A super car. Does everything it is supposed to. Cargo area can hold larger items than all small and some medium suv's. Completely reliable.
Outstanding value
Ownership of the Mercury Tracer has been a near flawless experience. This vehicle give great fuel economy, ride comfort and handling.
Top Notch Reliability
I bought my 1999 Mercury Tracer GS at the end of 1998. It's 2006 and this little car is still running flawlessly. I've logged just a notch under 100k and never had to put a penny into repairs. 36 mpg on the highway -- not too bad and the acceleration puts the new 2006 Toyota Matrix or the Vibe to shame. I don't know about the reliability of the other American cars, but they hit the jackpot with this one.
Summer
This car is very comfortable. Has air bags and a cd player along with am/fm radio. I never had any problems with the other than a loose ground wire and my heating leaking at one time. Both problems were fixed. It's still in excellent condition on the outside. On the inside, it's got a few stains in the floor carpet due to my heating core.
Reliable
I bought this former loaner car from dealership. Dealership lied, it had been in rear end accident. I paid cash and bought this as a "beater" car for on the road sales. I never intended to keep it long. But, this car has been awesome. NO problems. I have had a love hate affair with it since purchase. I am now looking to replace it, and as much as I want a new vehicle, I will miss this car due to its reliability. It owes me nothing and delivered far more quality for the $ than I ever expected.
My First Car
My first car!!! I love it I wanted something different that no other guys had. When I drove up in it the guys kind of laughed, but when I put 13x7 inch wire wheels on it with a 1200 watt system in it they gave me respect. It is good on gas, very reliable, and pretty quick for a 4 cylinder.
Tracer LS (4 spd Auto)
Bought as a repo for $500, at the time it was 3 different colors and had almost no muffler left. Had the car for over 2 years, and stuck a ton of money into it, but overall its probably the best car for the money I've ever owned. Acceleration sucks, ride quality is below average. Love the blue color and styling. Averaged about 33 mpg, once got 42 mpg on the hwy. Although it defined the word "beater", the car served me well through 2 WI winters, and the h*ll of a teenage boy driver, and it will be missed
1999 Tracer Wagon
This car is fun to drive, can park anywhere, and it has get up and go. Great gas mileage, 38 miles per gallon. No problems with this car, only neg thing is the seats are not comfortable for me since I have back problems. Otherwise this car is great!
Mercury Tracer Seat Problem
This car appears to be completely satifactory except that the seats are the most uncomfortable I have ever experienced. I cannot drive it for more that 1 hour without suffering severe pain in my posterior!

Excellent! Love my Tracer!
Other than paying more than true market value I love my Tracer! I primarily purchased my Tracer for fuel economy. And I have to admit...color. Red! I don't understand why consumers didn't like the Tracer!! It's a great little car! The designers could have done better with the leg space in the back seat. Very poor there. But all and all I give it a thumbs up, a high-5, and a 10! Thank you Mercury!
