One Hell of a motor 987K!!
I just got it and the motor still works after 987,645 miles well kinda I bought it off a person I know for $100 and after 3 yeres i still was cranking but did not start one was the fact that the battery was tost but we had jumper cables hooked up and it cranked and cranked and another was the Fact that it was SITTING for THREE YERES i mean what car can start right up after that long and i had no coolent...ya but the transmisson finely went. and to let uall know how it got those miles was going to arazona and back to new mexico and thrught snow too
Peice Of Junk!!
Never buy a Ford or a mercury Sable, only if its the SHO model Ford Taurus. I bought my mercury sable about 3 years ago with 40,000 miles on it. It ran perfectly at first, than 10,000 miles later the transmissions went out on it. So now i bought a 1995 Ford Taurus SHO,I really enjoy it because the motor is made by Yamaha and the tranny is too. Believe me, if u want a headache and alot of stress than buy a Mercury Sable!!
DISAPPOINTED
HAS 83K PUT IN TRANSMISSION,RADIATOR,BRAKES IN 1 YEAR COST APPR. $2000.00. WILL NEVER BUY MERCURY AGAIN.
I'm using it for a dog-house now
After the transmission gave out at just 100,000 miles and the head gasket blew for the THIRD TIME, I'm finished. I can't even get anybody to buy this thing, and I wouldn't sell it to them anyway. The best use for this thing is to let it sit in the barn for the dogs to sleep in. STAY AWAY!!!
Tranny dipstick
After seeing many mechanics, I was told that Ford put out the word that the dipstick is in error. People should fill tranny up to level to where it says ADD on dipstick, as in "Do not ADD..." This requires 2-3 quarts beyond crosshairs on dipstick. Good luck. Yes, tranny and head went out around 75k.
selling my sable
i bought my 3.8L with 100,000 miles and with no ac - after going through half of the winter i realized there is no heat either. when i tried to get it fixed they said there was a leak in the head gasket that would cost me almost what i paid for the car. now starting the car is a problem because its probably burning oil(tons of smoke pouring out the exhaust and smells awful). temp gauge keeps fluctuating even after new thermostat was put in. it does poor in the rain and even worse in the snow.
Ford has no integrity!
The Sable has actually good body design. The 3.8L engine is surprisingly responsive. The problem is integrity. Experienced all the problems this model is well known for: blown engine gasket (replaced with a re-manufactured engine), airconditioner, radiator leak @ 33,000 miles (replaced), electrical malfunctions. Called Ford several times to ask for help, but Ford refused despite admitting having many calls and recalls. Many of the problems are well known. Maybe, Ford is having its problems now because it lacks sufficient accountability for its bad design.
Get rid of it after 100,000 miles
I bought my 93 mercury sable used in 06' with 92,000 miles. I thought it had at least 100,000 more good miles on it since I have a 98 Buick Century with 350,000 miles on the original engine. Soon after buying the brake/shift lock jammed up on me and had to be replaced. After that, air conditioning unit, fuel pump, rear door lock wont work, alternator, check engine light started staying on, dash light bulbs burnt out, key ignition switch replaced. In the first 3 months of 2009 alone I have: replaced motor mounts, tie rods, window went out of track, and now a part in front of transmission which will run about $600. Stay away from this year Sable unless someone give you the car for free!!!!
Good Transportation
The Mercury Sable wagon has served us well. I needed a family car as well as a vehicle to haul things for my business and it has done both admirably. We bought the wagon used and have just made minor repairs. Better ride and handling than our Chrysler Minivan LE had.
NICE CAR
JUST BOUGHT A 93 4DR SEDAN. IT HAS 95000 ON THE ODOMETER. THE CAR RIDES AND LOOKS PRETTY GOOD. THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO SHIFT HARD WHEN PUTTING INTO GEAR. BACK LEFT PASSENGER POWER WINDOW DOES NOT WORK.A/C NEEDS NEW HIGH AND LOW PRESSUR HOSE OFF THE COMPRESSOR. HAS TO BE EXPENSIVE BECAUSE IT IS A DEALER ORDERS PART. CAR RUNS PRETTY DARN GOOD. SMOOTH SUSPENSION. PAID ONLY 1800.00 FOR IT. WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE BUT DO YOUR HOMEWORK. LOOKS AMAZING. NICE STYLE
DO NOT BUY A SABLE! Go with Japanese car
This car started going downhill ever since i bought it in december 2000. Check engine light always comes on, rear view mirror does not want to stay on, starter and alternator are going, sounds like jet liner, also, iwas driving down a smooth road and left passenger vent popped out of dashboard. leaks every fluid besides gas(at least not yet) rear stabilizer bar is shot, and the rear right window doesn't work. the car is nickel and dimeing me to death, you're better off getting a foreign car. AC doesn't work either.
Loved My Sable
Our Sable was a program car with 23k miles. We could go anywhere in that car, which being military happend quite often. Very roomy and comfortable. Excellent gas mileage My husband did all the seasonal maintenance and oil changes. Never had a problem. Was really impressed with its safety when a lady pulled out in front of us and made us T-bone her car. (totaled our Sable) The front end was pushed all the way to our dashboard The dashboard was intact and did not cave in on us. We were able to get out safely. I bought a Taurus thinking I was getting the same type car but have not been pleased with it. Wish I could find another 93 Sable!
Good Car
It is a very good car. It is compfortable but the leather makes it a little hot or cold depending on the temprature when first getting in the car.
Vadym's car
Bought this car from my mechanic after 1 owned. It had some minor accident before. Obviously the guy did some cleanup on it. In 4 months the radiator started to leak -- had to replace it. I use it a lot for driving into school (approx 40 mi/day), so I got around 113K now.The car performed excellent. Had no problems with AC. Indeed the flueds leak: replaced engine gasket, transmission gasket, and recently steering gear assly. Recently CV-joints started to clank on turns. A little bit slow to accelerate (old monny's car), but very smooth and comfortable. Roomy inside and in the trunk. Not a gas saver. But for its age performs decently.
my sable
i like the car. Mine never had mechanical troubles very comfortable and has a nice take off
Great car for the money
Bought this car fully loaded with 43000 mi, now has 89000. Done the usual maintenance, had to get the AC, left rear window fixed. Had no major problems until head gasket broke earlier this year. After fixed still has a lot of pick-up, performs great. Well made for a US car. Friend has similar car and has only run into problems with AC in 80000 miles.
Bernie's Car
Car is in excellent condition, rides well and have no serious problems at all.
no hope for mechanic
Hope you find a good one 'cause no ford dealer will be able to fix it if it's starts stalling in in summer. I'm sorry but no car with only 88k should have had 2 fuel pumps replaced, struts break and go through 2 sets of brakes one set of hoses drive belt and a new transmission.
Mom's Beater Renewed
I got this car from my mother with 140k as a hand me down. so I like say before I get into detail that my mother beats the crap out of cars. So now for my review. I have blown the stock head gasket on my car twice so I have since gotten some aftermarket heavy duty gaskets, new brake, exhaust, cooling, a/c, aftermarket stereo system, suspension, fuel injection system. Rebuilt 3.8 engine. Rebuilt transmission w/ upgrades for a total of about 10 grand. Since upgrades I've had a one slight problem with the temp gauge fluctuating but thats due to the fact thats its a 3.8 on a 3.0 cooling system (plans for aftermarket fan upgrade in works) other then that I have no more problems after 20,000 miles.
Good Car
I bought my car used with 89,000 miles on it. It now has 148,000 miles. I have had to get major repairs on the a/c and some bolts and things only twice, other than routine maintenance, (tires, oil changes etc. and replacing the battery twice in the past 7 years) I have had a very good experience with this car. When I bought it, it cost me $4,000. 00. It took $13.00 to fill the gas tank. Now it costs $35 to fill the gas tank. It is a good car to take on road trips. The sun has done a job on the hood paint.
94 Mercury Sable
I've had this car for 100,000 miles through out my high school and college days. It was towed 3 times, went through 4 starters, 2 fuel pumps, and left me stranded twice. I wouldn't buy this vehicle if it has over 100,000 miles. Otherwise, it's a good car. The power is great, good pickup, and room on the inside is plentiful.
Family Car with a solid feel
Bought new, with less than 80k miles after 10 years, the car is heavy but still easy to maneuver. It is comfortable on long trips, and been very reliable until transmission problems at 75k miles. Rest of car still works fine, but if you need a transmission, suggest a reliable company, but not the dealership, which is more expensive
Not a bad car but!!!!!!
We bought this car used with 110,800 miles on it. We had trouble with the transmition shortly after purchase and found out that this is very common in the Taurus/Sable. They changed our fluid and filter and said to ALWAYS keep the fluid 1/2 to 1 quart OVER filled. The trans is still working strong at 169,000 miles. Other than We have only replaced the waterpump and the powersteering pump because it was getting very noisy but still worked. Had to have a faulty air bag wire traced and replaced $222.00. Biggest repair has been brakes. over $700 for a full 4 wheel job!
Expressions of Excellence
Have been very pleased with this vehicle in all respects. I consider it to be an excellent family car.
Stable Sable
This car has been in the family since new, so I knew all of the history of it. It has always been fantastically reliable with minimal repairs in our 14 years of ownership. Got the head gasket fixed when the recall was announced so no problems there. Handles great, smooth ride, ok economy.
Great Car
Purchased new, put 160k on it. Have only done routine maintenace (oil change, tires etc). We did replaced 2 sensors back in 1999, cost $250 and just replaced the auto antenna. The car has held up well, we mostly go on long trips, we haven't even replaced the original brakes. Yes, we check them regularly. We have the 3.8L engine.
1994 sable LTS
my sbale is loaded and it is very depentible. it every thing stantard
Save The Sables
After the four tires were slit, at a restaurant, with only 750 miles on it. All went well. Extended warranty was a good thing to have when the Transmission went. No problem to get fixed. Recalls were done. No problem. Problem: 'sno go in the snow. Could not bring its self to go in the snow. That was the worst thing about it. Back seat riders felt like they were "floating"
dont buy it too used
Pretty decent car, problems with reliability though. Ford really needs to improve their transmissions. It was rebuilt by previous owner at about 75 K miles, I got it at 100K and within a month it needed to be rebuilt again. Expensive too, they wanted $1500 BASE to fix it. I got rid of it while I could. Don't bother buying it if it has very many miles on it.
1994 Midnite Green Sable
looks perfect. wrecked 3 times (T-boned each side and front end into a ditch once. No putty. New parts each repair). Everything works except the lumbar inflation in the passenger's seat. Has full electronics package. Leather interior in perfect shape.
What a rip off
I should have known not to buy the car when I saw it being fixed at the dealership. All these brand new things they put in the car, and some of them even caused MORE problems. I was back at the dealership 5 days into owning it because the belt broke (and 3 more times broke since then). I have replaced this and that, and things keep going. What a frustrating vehicle to own. stablizer bar has broken twice, muffler - gone, brakes need fixing constantly, shocks and struts, gone. you name it, its broken. right down to the spring to open the trunk. broken. oh, and the gas milage is a joke.
Awesome Car
This car is a wonderful car that drives nicely. It is very safe in the winter. If you hit the brakes really hard on ice the car automatically turns off.
Mecury Sables Are Lemons
I bought a car in 2000. It was only worth 3-4000, on the books. I have paid 11,700.00 so far to keep up the car. Mounts fall off, gase is guzzled down like a drink of water, electrical things do not work, just one problem after another.
Very reliable, comfortable ride
After owning this car for just over 4 years, I can say that it really is a winner. My secret was to buy if from a friend who maintained it superbly. She even had the door chime fixed when it went out! It has been very reliable, comfortable, and safe.

Typical Ford/Merc
Bought new in May of 95, noisy speedo, but no other problems until 80k when head gasket failed, but FORD REPLACED IT. Only Ford backs their vehicles like this as I have had GM and Mitsu cars and when the warranty is over with them, you are strictly out of luck. I also had trans failure @95K, 8yrs old. Had it rebuilt by reputable shop and I will now drive the wheels off this very satisfying, comfortable, powerful vehicle.
Nanna's Sable
Bought car from grandmother in '01 with 41k. Good riding car with good pickup. Have had transmission issues almost immediately, but have never had to replace. Engine still runs well at 122k, but burnt oil smell after 15 minutes of driving. I change the oil religiously every 3k. Annoying problem with driver's side door latch loosening and having to be re-tightened often. Had to replace radiator at 110k. Generally a good car.
What a mess!!!
Car was owned by a little old lady. Have had nothing but ongoing problems since day one. Brakes failed three times, check battery light on constantly and radiator started to leak within two months of purchase. Have brought it back numerous times to dealer/mechanic but I refuse to put any more of my hard earned money into this horrendous pile. Can't wait to dump it. Nothing but a horror show.
Road Car
I have 250,000 miles on odometer. Most hwy miles, 3.8 engine. Best snow car ever driven. Must have best tires. Add Stop-Leak to radiator asap, as radiator and head gaskets prone to leak (expensive stuff). Always change trans fluid every 25,000. Good car, I always look back after I park it. Comfortable seats and ride. Very good suspension with after-market shocks.
