Great Car- "The Eichmobile"
A friend just inherited another vehicle from a family member, so he gave me his 1990 Sable, which was given to him by another mutual friend of ours when the same thing happened to her, and it was given to her by another family member when she went to Bible College in Chicago. So it is sort of a congregational heirloom? Well, I have only had the car for a week, and I already own an 03 Taurus, I actually like the old Sable over the Taurus. It has a fine Cadillac ride to it, and the motor runs like new. The transmission needs some TLC, which I will soon take care of. The paint job is shot, but I am hoping to fix that next year, if the car makes it through the brutal Iowa winter weather.
Was the best family car!
I've owned this car for 9 years now, bought it in 97 with 96,000 miles on it and used it a lot for camping trips through the years. At 240,000 miles now it just now started breaking down with major mechanics problems. It was THE most reliable car I ever owned. Recent mechanical works were: waterpump & thermostat, wheelbarrings, front & rear breaks & lines, starter, alternator, muffler sytem. Biggest issues now are catalytic converter, flywheel, power steering and fuel injector going out, but that after nearly 1/4 million miles and the car is 16 yrs. old. The paint job is gone and it has some rust by the doors. This car has never seen a garage in it's life. It was built to last and that it did.
Best Car Ever
I bought my 1990 Merc. Sable in May of '98 w/76K miles. After 7 years and 100k later the car runs like when i first bought it; EXCELLENT. I have performed the maintenance religiously (changed oil every 3K, etc.). The only things I have replaced on the car are the rack and pinion, front struts and new tires. The car has never broken down and it is the most reliable car that we have compared to our other cars who are always visiting the shop for repairs.
My Mercury Sable
My sable is the first car that i have ever had. yes it is an older car but it is more durable than some of the newer cars. i have been in 3 wrecks since i got it and only the last two have done significant damage although only one of them was my fault.
great ride for all sumer.winter.
I got this 1991 sable from my friend 5 year ago. I drove tough 10,000 a year, 125*F 5 passengers MAX A/C up hill +full load in AR.From reno 1,900 trip. -15*F... E brake on snow jump 3-4feet high (try to have anew car) but it still run great. After all that full 1 year abused.I replace 4 strut, tire rod ends, end links and 1engine mount and I start to loving it. And I still drive it more than my subaru wrx STI -comfordable for long drive -roommy -good in snow -good connering -good brake (never lock on dry or wet) -smooth on speed bump rough or off road ONLY one thing I don't like slow acceleration hard to get up hill. But can't compare to my 300 hp STI.
Good Car
This is a good car and very reliable. I've had one other Sable, a 1991 Sable Wagon, and the only reason I had to get another was because it got totaled in an accident. The only bad thing about them is that it is true that around 100,000 miles the transmission goes out. This does pose a problem, but once you replace the tranny you can get a lot of use out of them.
Mecury Sable
158,000 miles and still runs like new. not one mechincal problem except from normal wear and tear. custom made cold air intake realy gave it some power. easy to work on. expect to get another 50-100k.
Excellent car if properly maintained
I have driven my 1990 Sable GS from 68,000 up to 140,000 and it is still going strong. A/C, engine sensors, water pump, and fuel pump had to be replaced between 100,000 and 140,000 but these are minor expenses compared to the decline in value of a new car. Properly maintained, the engine, automatic transmission, and drive systems will continue to perform smoothly. I expect to keep this car for many more enjoyable miles.
Although the Engine runs forever
Although the engine of this vehicle runs forever, it doesn't do much good because the rest of the car falls apart. Case in point: New CVs, new inner&outter Tie rods, Ball Joints, rear shocks, rear passenger door hinge is broken, bad 02 sensor, the list goes on and on. My car now has almost 200,000, which is great for the engine, but the rest of the car falling apart.
I love my car
Ive only had this car a couple months, but so far i love her. She has about 190000 miles, and still runs great. The paint is bad, and there is a lot of rust. but i want to invest to fix her up. i have had no major problems with her, but there are lots of small things i want to fix. Shes a very comfy ride. my friend and i refer to is as lazyboys in a car. haha.
Reliable
I have found that my sable is one of the most reliable cars from the early 90's (as most ford cars are.) It gets good highway miles for a sedan and if maintained regularly is quite reliable in everyday transportation. I have had little or no major repairs nor did previous owners.
Nice car but brakes down a lot
I bought my car to drive to work that is 35 miles away. And it seems that as soon as you get one thing fixed something else brakes.I have had to put in new struts. All kinds of motor work.Trunk would not latch it was the inside cable relese.Casette Tape dont play any more .Air condishining compressor pump froze up after 3 monyhs of use . Oil leak to expensive to fix.its the rear seal and you have to pull the motor to repair.and there is a lot of road noise .It may have been a nice car when it was new.I get 27 miles per gallon.
this car rocks
sables rock they just rock. sable power is amazing. this car kicks a** if you know what i mean
I like it!!!!!
i have owed my merc for 7 months now and it last longer than any of my other cars so far and i am hard on it so this car is built to last.
happy as you know what
I bought this car used with 80000 miles on it. it's been a wonderful car so far and has a terrific little 3.0L engine. I have 165000 miles plus on it now and it's still going strong. over the years ive only done minor ordinary repairs such items are stuts inner tierod ends fluid changes tires belts hoses. ive gotten as much as 28mpg with it but now am still happy with a repectable 24 at 165000 not too bad huh.
Horrid
There have been numerous problems with power, every month something seems to need to be replaced.
Another 3.8L Ford Head gasket "Blown"
This is a great comfortable car. Runs, drives and rides good. I bought the car used with over 100k miles. Just spent over 20 hours and 400 dollars replacing head gasket (what a pain). I understand that blown head gaskets are typical on these cars. Other than the blown head gasket, hole in the radiator, new starter and new brakes.....this is a wonderful car.
the worst car I have ever owned
This car has never been reliable in the 3 years that I have at it I have poured in thousands of dollars to fix problems. No problem is minor if I am able to go 2 months without a problem it just means the next one is going to be bigger than the last. Nothing is to specs none of the parts I buy fit even windshield wipers. Now that Im trying to sell it no one will even pay 800 dollars for it running telling me that it was the worst sable ford ever made I recomend no one to buy this car after 120 k miles it falls apart completely even with regular matainece
Dorrie's Mercury Sable Review
The car was reliable, except when turning right. There was always a loud rusty noise and popping sound and I was told that rotor was welded to something and that made the noise. The front passenger tire was always blowing out and needing replacement.
Ford SUCKS
Does Ford know how to make a car that's transmission doesn't crap out by design? Does Ford know how to make 3.8L engines that aren't so poorly designed that most all heads crack before 80k miles???
Crap
i had an '89 sable, but they're basically the same through '94 the head gasket went out at 90,000 miles transmission was completely shot at 110,000, after many months, and $1000's fixing it. do yourself a favor, avoid any Taurus/Sable prior to a '95 model.
Still Amazing after all this time
My car was purchased new at the end of 1990 by my grandmother. After she died in '99, it was purchased by my neighbors. They did a few minor repairs to it, nothing major, and then my parents bought it back for my first car. I've been driving it for nearly 3 years now and I totally love it! It's very reliable and comfortable (all of my friends are glad to catch a ride with me because of the comfort). My only complaint is that it isn't exactly the cutest thing for a teenager to be driving around! Gas mileage is great, even with over 130,000 miles on it and 12-13 years of wear and tear, only a few minor repairs and what not.
