New 2021 E-Class with MBUX is a Great Car

I drove the competitors BMW 5, Audi 6, Lexus ES 350 and this new E Class is really something special. I had the other cars via a Subscription Model including the 2020 Mercedes so I have recent experience for weeks at a time driving the cars. The MBUX is a great user experience. Buy the Premium package because of the 360 camera and the upgraded audio system. The other add-on stuff is fun but not really needed. You will use Android Auto and not the Mercedes Navi if you want accurate directions. The Mercedes Navi is very pretty but useless for directions. The Augmented Reality is fun, once, and may impress your friends but is more of a distraction than a help. The Driver Assistance package is interesting but the distronic cruise control is the only thing you will actually use from this package. This is a truly comfortable car with the latest electronics. Note if you never have had a Mercedes you will need a good independent mechanic to do your A/B Services (Oil Changes) if you want to avoid the the dealer. You must log all service in the electronic service log which all of the good independent shops will do. Note the Lexus is the best value if not boring, with regular gas and standard oil changes, but I think with the 2021 updates the Mercedes E 350 is more fun than the Audi 6 (watch for recalls) or BMW 5 (needs updating to stay competitive). Obviously you should compare similar versions of each model. Update 2 years later: Well the car is still great. I only have 7,350 miles and just dropped the car for a B Service. So far no problems except for a few early glitches with the cameras that resolved after a restart, Note the dealer costs for A & especially B Service is nuts. I was quoted $1,529.74 for a B Service at the dealer. I am trying a local specialty place that charges $450. I guess I will see. Last year another specialty shop charged $250 for an A service which was fine compared to $595 at the dealer.

I’m so glad that I used the Edmunds new car pricing tool. Because of the tool I was able to get 9.6% off the retail price. Which was a few hundred dollars less than the suggested price. Of course , I had to do some serious negotiating because of the included options but it was worth it.

Caution - recall waiting to happen - front bumper

Joe, 03/10/2023

The front bumpers are getting torn off just by parking at a traditional parking lot cement barrier. Apparently, when riding, the car automaticly rises. And when you park, it automatically lowers. Unfortunately, if the front number is in front of the cement barrier when you park, when you return to your car, turn it on and put it in reverse, the car is still lowered and so putting it in reverse, tears the front bumper off. And Mb is refusing to fix it. This is clearly a design flaw. This happened to me. A friend witnessed it. And the next day saw the exact same thing happened to someone else.

Phenomenal tech, smooth as glass engine and decent fuel economy make the E53 a must have. Definitely worth the few $$'s over the E450. Get the upgraded steering wheel to allow fast changes in and out of sport or sport+ mode. Love the touchscreen and smooth trans. It is a bit tight on the interior though.

The more I drive this thing the more I love it. Sub 4’s 0-60 despite the official 4.4, awesome exhaust note with the performance exhaust, and more customization for the driver than you could dream of. The interior is hands down the best interior in autodom, and as one of the best looking cars on the road you have the perfect combination of luxury and sportiness.

Great looking car, ride pretty smooth, annoying noise from sensors when back up(can turn if off!). Car has gas tank sensor defective after 8 months of ownership. Still under warranty and the entire tank had to be replaced at no costs, but car had to be at shop over a week! Rear seatbelts recalled, checked for proper functionality! Car is a show piece because of the beautiful color. Feeling like the metal is thinner because the rain drops make big noise on the roof of the car! My old Benz did not do that at all! Still less than a year of ownership, hopefully no more problems !

Solid, comfortable, quiet, powerful and beautiful inside with wood accents and ambient lighting. Great styling with all led lights and great looking AMG 18” wheels. Intermittent problems: instrument cluster goes dim, right rear directional light warning, volume on radio jumps up when changing to presets, volume decreased on its own, back up camera displays inoperative, even with optional air body control, the ride is not as smooth as advertised.

The car is phenomenal. I have a 2023 e450 4Matic cabrio. The air suspension option makes cornering perfect as there is no “roll” in the car and it smooths out any bumps so the car feels more like my former S560 coup. All controls are intuitive, as are the plethora of safety features. The interior is beautiful. The sound system is fantastic. Really happy with this purchase.

Caution for Older Buyers

UPDATE: I got rid of this car after about seven months. The technology was just too much a pain in the neck. Far too many functions are controlled by either the touch screen or touch buttons on the steering wheel. The Hot Spot Drive internet connection never worked properly...and Hot Spot convinced me the problem was with the car, not their network. Mercedes was either unhelpful or downright unresponsive in dealing with this issue. I finally asked myself why should I continue to own a rapidly depreciating asset that gave me far more frustration than pleasure. I gladly sold it back to another Mercedes dealer...substantial loss, of course, but better than had I grtted my teeth with it for another year or two. I replaced it with a 2013 W221, the S550, for half the price. And it's easily twice the car. All real steering wheel buttons, no touch buttons. No annoying touch screen. The car's ride, handling, and power are all superb. Now...here's my earlier review of the miserable 2022 E450: The superlatives about the car's ride, handling, power train, and overall quality are spot on. Nothing new to add. But the technology (MBUX etc) presents a very, very steep learning curve for those who are not really comfortable with touch screens et all, primarily older people, I suspect. Despite careful study, I haven't been able to figure out the navigation system or the voice commands. Sometimes stuff works and sometimes it doesn't. The owners manual is all but worthless...full of what are probably government-mandated warnings and cautions...but very light on specific operating instructions for these complex systems. So if you're an older buyer and want a magnificent driving, riding, handling car that is beautifully designed and built...go ahead...have kind of a final blowout automotive fling ...but expect a lot of frustration and annoyance with the touch screens, touch pads, fussy steering wheel buttons, etc. Maybe I should go back to a W126 diesel! Or...forget about the technology and just enjoy driving the car. Mercedes pretty much dumped the telematic features on my 2016 W212...so in five or six years they'll probably drop the MBUX system in favor of something better. My W212 still ran like a top, however, so the new W213 probalby will too.

The MBUX System Gets a D Grade

My wife recently purchased a 2021 E350 with the Prestige Package because she wanted the Surround View Camera system. This was the fifth Mercedes-Benz vehicle we've purchased over the years, but we are both greatly disappointed with this car. The MBUX audio and navigation system is complicated, not very logic-intuitive and at times downright frustrating. The Surround View Camera requires two steps to activate. After pushing the camera button on the center console you then have to select a specific camera view by touching the far right side of the dashboard screen -- a potentially far stretch for some drivers to reach. The sunblind does not automatically close when you close the sunroof; you have to manually pull the blind shut, a rather cheap thing for a "Prestige Package." It appears the Owner's Manual was written by lawyers more interested in repeatedly warning about not sticking heads and arms out the windows than in providing easy-to-understand "how to" information about the car and its functions. Overall grade: a "D" as in disappointed. Update: we were so unhappy with this vehicle that we traded it in after just three days and only 68 miles to purchase a 2022 Genesis G70.

Great drive, handling, features. Still learning which of 4 diff options to use to control features (Nav, radio, AC/heater, lights, ...) your can 1. Use the steering wheel buttons/touchpads, 2.. Use the buttons/touchpad (mouselike) on the console, 3. talk to it, 4. Use the dash touchscreen. Which to use and when will be a 2-3 month study. Can't give it a 5 until I see how reliable these are. Already found problems with them: 1. Using console touchpad to scroll through a list skips two entries instead of 1 like it should; 2. Voice output questions vary in volume - some get so low you can't hear them.

This is our first Mercedes. We are in love with this beautiful car. The build quality is amazing and the station wagon drives much better than any SUV. We drove 7k miles and really enjoy the agility, silence and comfort. The engine is strong and very good on gas. We get around 30mpg on every long distance trip which results in a 600 mile range. The safety tech is amazing. In general it took us a couple of days to understand how to operate the Mercedes MBUX system.

I purchased the 2023 E350 and have been having a problem with the easy entry exit feature. I have been to the dealer twice and they could not fix the problem. they came up with some lame excuse about the parameters were set correctly from the factory. I will keep trying and holding Mercedes accountable until they problem is resolved even if I have to file a claim for compensation.

Surprise, not what expected

I just rented this car for several weeks, while mine was getting repaired (after some a-le dropped something on its roof and drove away). The model I got was E350, which likely accounts for most of the difference between my experience and that of Edmunds testers. In short, I was surprised how I disliked this car. My friend's E500 I tried in the past was an excellent car; the C300AMG was also great, but this one was a disappointment. While I liked the mentioned cars, in the end I felt they were not exactly perfect match to me and selected BMW440 (not the bucktooth but earlier coupe). So I expected E350 would not be exactly mind blowing to drive but still would be a nice ride in a luxury way. Well, it was not. Engine is clearly lacking, even in Sport+ mode, and, to add insult to injury, noisy (!) - not sport noisy, but more like complaining Hyundai. Suspension is floaty - if someone likes that cushy feeling, like driving on a pillow, thats fine, but to me it felt uncomfortably disconnected from the road and car felt like it was heavier than it is. Want to take a corner, better slow down to 5m/hr, unless you enjoy your blood curling. Steering is terrible - no road feel, only works without your blood pressure going to 180 after you practice and just 'know' how much you need to turn the wheel to achieve that turn - I felt plainly unsafe. Its relatively elegant looking, sure. Interior is fine but seats uncomfortable (in Mercedes ?!), my back started to ache after 30 mins of driving and I could not adjust mine sufficiently, though seats controls are conveniently located. I was not too fond of transmission level located on the steering wheel, but thats minor thing. Seats frankly could use some better material than felt cheapy leather imitation they used. Though probably Mercedes would charge another $7k just for leather seats. Interior design was rather pleasant, though not really impressive to me. Some controls locations could make your brows rise (at least mine did). In addition, while its a relatively large car, the interior space felt just enough, not large at all. In fact, not larger than my wife's BMW Z4 which a good yard or two shorter (sure its a two seater, not four, but if you are a driver you dont care ). I cant imagine buying this car for just a little less than my BMW440 - there is simply no comparison in overall value, before even starting to talk about driving enjoyment. I found that E350 is definitely better car than Chevrolet Cruse, for instance, but not for the money. Was curious what other people think of it and so read couple reviews, including this very Edmund's. The only explanation I have for their positive review is that they did not drive E350 but only E450, and with some add-on packages, which probably pushed the cost of the test car close to $70k or so. In which case, still not a good value. Mercedes own C class AMG is better, Audi 3-5 series are better; BMW 2-5 series are better. The only reason in my view to own E350 is for underachiever to have a prestige badge at discount or getting it as uncle Joe inheritance.

My 2021 Mercedes E Class Convertible has not disappointed me. I have owned this car for 31/2 years and have enjoyed it every time I get behind the wheel. The exterior styling is second to none and the interior is 1st class and very luxurious. The ride is smooth, powerful and the gas mileage is very adequate considering the high performance engine. This car is a keeper.

The best car I've ever owned

The car is comfortable and drives like a dream. I ordered exactly what I wanted and M-B built it for me in Germany. The only negative is the cruise control. It's now like every other car and I loved the way it used to work with the cruise control on a stick below the directional signal lever.

The car (as a co-driver) feels really nice to drive. I love how the car parks for you, it’s a good speed for everyday driving, and very good safety features,

I knew what I was buying and I was right in my choice. Performance, quality technology comfort exceeded expectations for the money. A sensible rewarding deal given prices of the new. The E350 2021 sedan comes loaded with common sense. Not only subtle luxury.
