RX7 Convertible Experiences

I have owned Rotarys on and off since 1978. From the RX2 through several RX7s. My convertible has an aftermarket turbo on it and it not only the most fun car I have ever owned, but also one of the most reliable. If you take care of a Rotary, it will last well over 200k miles. Although gas mileage is not that great, you save in rebuilds and repairs on the car.

i have a convert, the targa top is awsome. the rotary motor in the car is the best thing to come to cars. these cars can take anything you put towards them. the factory bbs wheels give it a great touch. i bought it because this car has been my dream car and i saved up to get it.

A true sports car

I have always has an RX-7 in my garage ever sInce I first learned how to drive. The rotary engine has the life of a Honda (if treated right) and has the power of an inline 6. It is the funnest car I have driven. Even more fun than the C5 Corvettes. The 50/50 weight makes for awesome handling. I am a true rotor-head for life.

Don't Buy One!!

I bought mine with 90 thousand miles which is quite low for that old of a car. I did a bunch of work on it. New brakes, shocks, which are insanely expensive to put in as they had to tear the rear of the car apart to install them. Parts were crazy, I have BMW and parts are half what I paid for Mazda parts. In the winter when I moved to Portland from Ca. I had a hard time starting it. 10 mechanics later the compression was low on one of the rotors. Car had 129 thousand miles, been babied from day frequent oil changes, etc. Needed a new engine. It was fun to drive when it worked but why do these cars have fans, the engines always burn out and people still love them. I am over it.

Love my RX-7

I've had two now, and I've loved them both. The only serious repair concern involved losing compression in the engine. It's not a problem that will kill the car but it can be annoying the first time. What a ride. This car hugs the curves, loves the road, is fun to drive. Great on long trips, too. OK, so it doesn't have cup holders. So what. You need to keep both hands on the wheel to feel the excitement anyway. The oil-cooled engine is great in Southern climates (like mine) and when you regularly change the oil every 2500 - 300 miles, you have no worries.

This car is so incredibly fun to drive, and for the money you spend, you can outhandle and outaccelerate 95% of the cars on the road.

I have had 2 RX-7's so far and i love both of them they handle the turns better than any car i have owned. I have added a few minor things to increase the Hp and it has made a difference, the Rotary will run for a very long time if you take care of it by checking the oil and water levels, if the temp gets a little high "STOP DRIVING IT" until you find out what is causing it. I have heard of many people killing their rotarys due to a leaking water hose. Overall an awsome car for the price.

Best Car Ever Made

The rx7 is in my opinion the best car made to date, and the 1989 to 1991 models are the best. With a 80 inch 1.3L 13B 6-port rotary engine, the sound and high end can't get better. This is THE car to have if you plan to autocross, or if you just like to corner like that inner maniac. With a 50/50 weight distribution, this is one of the best handling cars ever. You mold into the interior, and get the feeling of being in a jet. This isn't just driving, just like the owners arent just owners. We're fanatics!

Best performance available for the money

Faster (straight-line)than a non-turbo 300ZX or Supra and handles better than 98% of all cars on the road. The rotary engine is a mystery to some, but it is wonderful and easy to work on in the spacious engine bay. Maintenance is simple. Lots of aftermarket performance options, though these aren't a requirement for fun, unlike with a Honda. Comfortable enough for daily driving, and still stylish even though the design is over 15 years old.

Super Fun Car!

I would have purchased this car when I was in high school if I had the money. Now it is my fun second car for weekends and playing around. This car has been very reliable and only required a tune up and some exhaust work to be brought back to good running condition. It needs some work on the intake manifold (5th and 6th ports), because they are stuck (works sort of like Honda's VTEC concept - but the rotary engine has no valves).

Great car, Rotary engines have a unique sound. Unlike other cars, the 13b rotary loves high rpms. This car corners like a true sports car. 50/50 weight, no need to slow down just turn the wheel and hit the gas. If your tires are worn the rear end might slide a bit, easily corrected by steering. Thats only when you take a 90 degree turn at 60+mph. The suspension is stiff, so the car stays solid, no bounce. Hit a bump at 115mph on the freeway, I was lifted up out of my seat a couple inches but the car didn't budge.

One man's opinion on my RX7 after 12 yrs

This car gets attention wherever it goes. Awesome styling, sleek body design that's timeless. A real thrill to drive on country roads with the cd cranked. Handles like it's on rails, responsive and cool sounding rotary engine. Top notch stereo/am/fm/tape/cd by Pioneer. Headrest speakers, plus four more give great sounds. Couldn't ask for a car to do more. Leather interior, great power top with T-top option. Paint looks as good as new. Has California hitch for pulling small boat, trailer. Am looking forward to driving the RX8 coming out this year.

You gotta love 'em

Have owned 3 of these, and never owned another car. '86 base, '88 GTU and now my '90 Turbo II. It's a beautiful car on the outside with that perfect sports car look, but nothing too radical that will end up looking dated, even now 20 years after the design inception. The handling is top notch, and with a simple plus size tire and wheel upgrade the next time you need new tires you'll stick to the road like glue. Comments abound on the car, and most people can't believe it is a '90. It's funny how many people think the car is only 5 or 6 years old. Grab a turbo if you can, they are most definitely the most fun of the different versions. I'd love a convertible for the summer.

extremely fast car, fun to drive. has minor reliability quarks but they'r worth the trouble. turbo boosts well at 6.5 psi. dont drive in rain or snow because traction is minimal. and sometimes traction is bad on old roads but only when driving with a heavy foot.

Handles like a Porsche of the same vintage. very fun to drive. very comfortable sport bucket seats. The engine is very reliable, but the rest of the car isn't. I have had to replace the alternator, battery, brake master cylinder, clutch master cylinder, clutch, wiper switch, radiator, window switches, stereo (I guess I didn't have to), and usual routine maintenance. These cars just reach an age where everything breaks at once. If you get it before this age or after someone has fixed everything, they are very very nice cars that are fun to drive. People will be envious when they hear you have one.

I just love the car. I would suggest it might be a car more suited to someone willing to do his own mechanical work. Especially as they get older, even one in good condition will likely need some attention. Incredibly fun car, can be had cheap, and the design looks surprisingly up to date, not losing much to newer cars on the road today in the looks category. Great option for an affordable sports car, that can respond very well to modification. The turbo models can be hard to come by, if you get one, take care of her!

The solid, yet nimble road feel, along with a luxurious cockpit, gave it a refined ride that begged for twisty mountain roads. When I put it on the track at Portland International Raceway it tore through the turns with gusto. The caveat was that I'd bought a 10 year old car, with all the wear-n-tear that that implies. Sadly, the clutch completely died on me after only 6 months. In the end, with the dead clutch, maintenance risk and the pressing need for 2 more seats, I traded it in for a Nissan sedan. Sigh.
