Nissan just wouldn't be the same without its Z, so when the company gave its iconic sports car a fairly thorough redesign for 2023, enthusiasts breathed a collective sigh of relief. The former Z had been left to languish for too long, and we hoped the new Z would breathe some life back into the brand. Though not totally different from its predecessor, the latest Z is a quicker, more comfortable and far more modern vehicle in every way. Power comes from a twin-turbocharged V6 engine, and the Z offers the choice of a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic. Considering Nissan added the Nismo version for 2024 — a major and welcome addition — it's not surprising to see the two-seater continue into 2025 relatively unchanged. The only noteworthy addition is the classic Bayside Blue color scheme borrowed from the GT-R lineup.

Driving experience

How does the Nissan Z drive? Our manual-transmission test car accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5 seconds flat, slower than the six-cylinder Toyota GR Supra. While we love the option of a six-speed manual and the Z's automatic rev matching, the gearbox feels cumbersome and imprecise.

The Z Performance stops from 60 mph in 112 feet and registers 0.98 g of lateral grip, trailing rivals. It feels more reluctant and less satisfying to drive when pushed. Body control and steering feedback could use refinement, and while the brakes feel strong, the antilock braking system can allow slight lockup that can briefly unsettle the car.

The Z's day-to-day ride quality is commendable. The low-profile tires do let a lot of small, sharp impacts into the cabin, but larger bumps are dispatched with ease.

Visibility is fair directly out of the back, but the blind spots are bigger than in other coupes and the view forward is hindered by a lower seating position and large windshield pillars.

We were underwhelmed by the Z's advanced driver assist systems, which are limited to adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning. Both systems are also too sensitive for a sports car. Rivals have more features, and they work better.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Nissan Z? The Z is one of the more comfortable sport coupes on the market. The heated seats on our Performance trim level test car featured both manual and power adjustments, and our drivers found them plenty comfortable.

The Nissan's climate system maintained excellent control over cabin temperatures, and we appreciated the easy-to-adjust vents. The three dials that control the climate system are appreciated, but they can be tough to read at a glance. We're less enamored with the noise, or at least the quality of the noise, emanating from the Z's turbocharged engine. It lacks refinement and doesn't sound particularly sonorous.

This new generation of Z feels less claustrophobic than the previous model and provides a driver-centric layout with lots of useful information. The customizable digital instrument cluster is crisp and readable in all lighting situations. The 9-inch touchscreen features easy-to-read graphics and is quick to respond to inputs, but the menu structure and various redundant home screens could use a rethink.

For as low as the Z sits, it's not overly difficult to get in and out of thanks to generous door openings and fairly unrestrictive seats.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The Z has been given Nissan's latest touchscreen interface. The graphics are crisp and the response times are fairly quick, but the layout of the home screen graphics as well as some of the information it can display are pretty questionable. (Do you really need to check your stock prices in this car?) We thought our test car's Bose audio system was just OK, lacking the richness and resolution we'd expect from a branded audio system.

Thankfully the touchscreen is easy to reach because the Z's voice control system leaves a lot to be desired. It has a pretty rigid menu structure, and the system had a difficult time understanding many of our commands.

Storage & cargo

How’s storage and cargo? Despite a seemingly large hatchback, the Z is far from the most practical coupe. With a meager 6.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity, it trails the GR Supra and Ford Mustang, and the cargo area is compromised by its shallow depth and open-to-the-cockpit design. This means groceries will either be flattened under the rear glass or wind up in the front seat if you're not careful.

Storage for passengers is better but isn't always convenient. There's a small tray in front of the gear lever, and the cupholders and center console can manage smaller personal items. The problem is with the larger storage areas. They are tucked just behind the front seats, but you can really only reach the small bins and extra glovebox once you're seated in the car.

Is the Nissan Z a good value? What you want from the Nissan Z will heavily influence whether you think it's a good value. The Z lacks the bang for the buck of rivals like the Ford Mustang GT and Toyota GR Supra. But if you simply want a stylish, sporty coupe that focuses more on comfort than all-out speed, the Z makes more sense at this price. Build quality is solid, and the Z is available with an appealing array of interior color options. The warranty is fairly standard, with three years/36,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper and five years/60,000 miles of powertrain coverage. Roadside assistance is included for three years/36,000 miles.

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates a six-speed Z will get 20 mpg combined, and we were pleasantly surprised to see our test car achieve nearly 26 mpg on our mixed-driving evaluation route. The Z backed that figure up with another result of just over 24 mpg on a separate tank of fuel with far more city traffic mixed in. If you opt for the nine-speed automatic, the EPA says the Z should return 22 mpg combined.

The Nissan Z is a tricky car to pin down. Its styling and sports car heritage are a bit misleading because it leans much more toward a grand-touring coupe than a true sports car. Besides the Nismo trim, the Z simply lacks the performance, the reflexes and the visceral excitement you can get from a more focused sports car. But that's not to say the Z isn't a good drive. It offers attractive styling, a torquey engine and a far more comfortable ride than most other low-slung coupes could dream of, especially over long distances. There's a bit of refinement still lacking in this new Z, but it's got a character all its own.

The 2025 Nissan Z is a two-door sport coupe with three available trim levels: Sport, Performance and Nismo. Every Z is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine driving the rear wheels. For those unfamiliar with Nissan, Nismo is short for Nissan Motorsports and serves as the automaker's in-house tuning brand for a variety of its vehicles. When the Z relaunched in 2023, we felt that the Z had lost some of its performance edge, lacking the acceleration and handling capabilities of rivals like the Toyota GR Supra and Ford Mustang. But when the Z Nismo dropped for 2024, we were genuinely surprised at how meaningful the upgrades were in making the Z finally feel like a true sports car. The handling is far more crisp and predictable, and the subtle styling tweaks give the Z Nismo an understated presence the standard car lacks. Our only real gripe about the Nismo is that it comes only with the nine-speed automatic and the six-speed manual transmission isn't offered.
