Used 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Consumer Reviews
Looks good parked in the dealer's garage
I hail from the Detroit area and we’ve always purchased cars from American manufacturers. In 1999, we purchased a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The reliability has been lousy at best. It has been in the shop for one thing or another 3-4 times a year since we've owned it. The “rap sheet” is longer than my arm! The repairs did not cease after the warranty expired (due to time lapse). At 38K, the PCM module died, stranding my wife. At 41K, I found a transmission leak on my garage floor. At 43K, the Quadring Seal (?) was replaced. Got nowhere with Chrysler. Need I say more? Reliability is the name of the game. Acura MDX here I come!
OK for now
66K and four sets of rotors. Two covered under warranty. Window regulator replaced under warranty. Transmission not refined, but no major problems. Vehicle has saved my butt numerous times in bad weather when others had lesser fortune. Would not recommend to others because of poor reliability.

CA to NM JEEP
I enjoy this vehicle alot, but it sucks way to much fossil fuel.
Chrysler Sucks
After 10k miles started having front brake pulsations. Took to dealer for repair. They turned the rotors. After 5k miles same problem. DIDO. Mechanic said that rotor was at tolerence limit and could not be turned again. I asked to replace the rotors. Chrysler would not authorize that. On 5/13/02 Chrysler service bulletin #0500302 says that for this problem, replace rotors, calipers and pads on all 1999-2002 GCs. It took Chrysler 3 years to admit they had bad parts and would not replace them. I called Chrysler to have the repair done. They said--sorry Charlie, that is a ware part and nothing can be done. THEY NEVER FIXED IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!
Transfer case
Transfer case went bad at 98K miles. Dealer wanted $800 to replace transfer case. Had transfer case repaired by private dealer by replacing the "timing belt" inside the transfer case for $200. Only other problem is with the A/C...the A/C appears to be a known problem with easy repair. Otherwise, the vehicle is fun to drive; MPG is a little less than advertised. Very comfortable vehicle with great towing capacity.
