232,000 miles and going strong

With the 5.2 liter engine, it's an extremely reliable vehicle that's taken me 232,000 miles on and off road in fourteen states. No core powertrain work has been necessary so far. The only time I got stuck was in deep, virgin snow without chains when I got off the trail into a shallow ditch.

Haven't had a single problem with it yet. Very impressed overall, but the gas mileage is terrible.

I just got this Jeep about a month ago with 150k miles. I had to have some long needed maintenance done, but aside from that it's been great so far. It has about a 4 inch body lift with mud terrain tires and nice rims. It also has great power and it does extremely well offroad. Gas mileage is bad, but that is just a price you have to pay. Overall it seems great and handles well.

Overall, I'm in love with my JEEP. Bought it to satisfy my-next-car-is-a-4x4-v8-and-jeep. Been all over, in all terrain, and love it.

Very Satisfied with Jeep

These older Jeeps, along with the newer models are some of the best all around vehicles out there. I have owned one for nearly a year after buying it from a close friend who had driven it for years and taken care of it. Its reliability is unbeatable. It's also rugged and ready for about anything you could possibily need it for. One of the bigger advantages of the Grand Cherokee is that it has the most room of most any Jeep model so there is plently of leg room, and carrying room which is important for someone who packs it once a week with a large sound system and instruments or camping gear. I would highly recommend this vehicle.

Blown Engine,sick sad and miserable

I loved the Jeep. It was driven less than seven thousand mi per year and had regular maintence. With less than a hundred thousdand mi on it, the engine threw a rod through the block on the freeway on the way home. Needless to say I am heartbroken. I am a grandma and this vehicle has seldom been in 4x4, never beat or abused. within 2 years of being new, paint was flaking off and the dealer got that problem fixed, One new set of Michelin tires, brakes, and power steering hoses were the items that had to be replaced. Now it is sitting in the driveway with me griping away.

A great SUV for town and country

We've used this car for over eight years to tow a camper, commute in LA traffic, go to the mountains, and for everything in between. It is our most trusted and reliable car, and the most used. I would buy another.

14 Years of Reliable Ownership, The Perfect Jeep

What a great SUV. I had a sharp looking dark green 1993 5.2L V8. A fantastic car for the mountains, snow and daily driving. It had amazing passing ability, great ride height and visibility, good cargo space, and very comfortable front and rear seats. For me it was nice to have the spare tire mounted in the cargo area. Regularly maintained and hardly anything went wrong with it in 14 years, well over 100,000 miles. Alarm system was touchy, a window would be glitchy on a rare occasion, and the radio stopped working a few years ago, but it was otherwise perfect. They are reliable. The first SUV to have an airbag. I would still be driving mine, but some good-for-nothing bozo stole it. The only issue with these early Jeeps is the recall because of the gas tanks exploding in rear end collisions. If you get one, be good to it, and it will be good to you.

TAKE GOOD CARE OF THEM AND THEY WILL RUN FOREVER

bought my first one at the turn of the millenium. now twenty years later, it has a bit of minnesota rust from all of the salt but the engine is strong and so is the transmission. front rotors literally rusted off this vehicle from the salt but new Nakamoto's were put on and it carries on. biggest issue in this wet PNW area is the moisture incessantly attacking it, parked outside they never seem to ever dry out at all. Best to keep dessicant on the dash and keep that recharged each week lest you start to condense way too much moisture in the car. those rear vents are there to allow the occupants to breathe but they can be an issue in wet places like the PNW is. Anyway, with an MSD6A on her, she got 25 plus MPG on the highway, and get this, I ran Bosch Platinum plugs in her for 14 years and she still started. Of course they were worn pretty badly but due to the MSD6A, they still fired. best place for that is to mount it under the wiper arm plastic shrowd on the passenger side, as there is nowhere in the engine compartment for it to keep it cool. Note: water pumps, radiators, and alternators are about al you'll change on these other than the oil. Using LUCAS oil stabilizer, it stopped the oil consumption in it's tracks and the lifters sound less clacky and it just runs like a scalded dawg. Just an amazing vehicle even with the VIC cold solder joint issues and the leaky caps that make the overhead mileage computer and compass not work. All in all the best vehicle I have ever owned, so I bought a second one one year newer because they're just bullet proof. Second one has the 318 C.I. v8, 5.2 Litre engine in it, and yep, it needs the shifter linkage grommet at 221k miles but it's still on it's original MOPAR water pump!!! Oh, forgot to mention the electric fuel pump on the 4.0L one went out at 157k miles, and required the tank to be dropped to change that. Nothing beats these older jeeps. NOTHING!

Like the size and driver visibility. The features are good. The motor has a 180k miles on it and uses a qt of oil every 1500. Hoping to drive it for another 16 months and then buy something newer (or new).
