Don't listen To The "Low Pep Engine" Hype!

2017 Jeep Compass All New Trailhawk 4dr SUV 4WD (2.4L 4cyl 9A)

Here is my 2 cents on the 2017 Compass. First of all, I'm a long time Jeep user, around 12 of them over the years, so I considered gas millage when shopping for my new Jeep. The Trail Hawk Compass I purchased gets over 30 MPG HWY when driven with MPG in mind. What I mean is no heavy acceleration when passing or climbing hills, just ease into any acceleration scenario. At any rate, I've read reviews where folks complain about the acceleration, but one has to get used to pushing the accelerator with this new Compass. Believe me, if you punch the gas this thing is plenty peppy, it's just a matter of getting used to how much to gas it. They have installed a 4 cylinder engine for good MPG so getting used to the 9 speed transmission and how to punch the pedal takes a while, but this thing has plenty of pep. Also, I don't understand why folks complain about the stop/start feature that the compass boasts.... It works perfectly for fuel savings and can be turned off at the press of a button.... I love my compass and for the MPG I get I'd say it's a great vehicle for any type of travel outside pulling a heavy trailer load, but isn't that why they make trucks? I purchased a factory lifetime bumper to bumper warranty for $3,500, so warranty options are a huge plus. Take a chance on the Compass and enjoy its great sound system, comfort (for SUV), stylish looks, and killer interior, you won't be sorry.

The Jeep Compass is just plain fun to drive. It is a Jeep and has a firm ride that is solid and is confident under any road condition. The interior is not as "plush" as other vehicles to which it is compared but it costs thousands less but it is still well equiped. Those who complain about this car after buying it apparently never bothered to drive it before spending their money. One can't blame the car for their failure to determine whether the car is right for them. Over all it is a fine vehicle it is a Jeep not a luxury sports car.

Finally traded in this pile of junk

To be honest, I absolutely loved this Jeep when I bought it new. I was able to rationalize the gutless engine and absolutely terrible 9-speed that required ramming the gas to the floor to coax a downshift. It really is a rotten engine and transmission combo. Just a dog to drive. But it was a Jeep. And it could go places other crossovers could only dream of. So I loved it, dour interior and poor fit and finish be damned. Then it started living up to the Jeep reputation for poor projected reliability. The Jeep was in the shop a LOT. I could still justify it while the repairs were under warranty, but when Jeep refused to cover items that broke for a second time, after having been repaired once, sometimes twice, while under warranty, I’d had enough. The Jeep looks good and does have respectable off-road capabilities for its class, but it wasn’t ultimately enough to overcome the terrible reliability and complete lack of support from Jeep and the dealership when fixing defective parts with new defective parts that were destined to break again. And once factory warranty has expired, even the extended warranty I bought wouldn’t cover the cost. So at 55,000 I traded it in on a Mazda CX-30 Turbo. Wow. Night and day. Don’t miss the Jeep at all and will never buy another. And this is coming from someone who has owned 7 different Jeeps in my life. Poor quality and even poorer support from Jeep and the dealership cost them a lifelong customer.

If I Could Do it Over Again.......

2017 Jeep Compass All New Latitude 4dr SUV 4WD (2.4L 4cyl 6M)

If I had another chance at purchasing this vehicle.......1) I'd upgrade to the advanced safety features; as it is there are a few blind spots requiring constant diligent observation. One blind spot is the front windshield pillars. The pillars create a momentary obstruction to pedestrians crossing the pillars.. be vigilant!! That said, other models have similar obstructions. 2) As is common with this genre of vehicle, the vision to the rear both left and right is limited. Jeep needs to include blind spot monitoring in all levels of the New Compass, not only as an option. However I would purchase the option in a moment if I could do it over again. The New Compass provides a solid feel and ride, which is important to me. Getting used to the shift points on my six speed manual (which I opted for) is a normal learning curve. So far other than the listed items, I am pretty well satisfied.. Of course, at 10 days in, I still enjoy looking out my front window at my new Compass; the new car feeling has not yet worn away.....

All New Latitude is a Great Value

The All New Jeep Latitude is a vehicle that is a great value with great resale value, especially with 4wd. The ride is stiff and the handling is very good. The interior is good quality and not plasticy and cheap like the Jeep Renegade. The seating is very comfortable. The infotainment center, even with the smaller 5-inch screen and bluetooth, is very nice. The only upgrade that I would suggest is the larger screen along with more technology. It would be worth the extra money. Overall, I am very happy with this vehicle. It is my first Jeep. I did a lot of research and prefer this model over the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Don’t waste your money on this vehicle. There are way too many faults about it that can’t be overlooked. I bought it with hopes of having four-wheel drive capability in the winter. The four-wheel-drive worked well, but almost like it thrust the Jeep too much that I would almost drive off the road. Besides that, Jeep did nothing to improve this vehicle since it came out. It is clearly obvious on every aspect of this piece of junk. My biggest complaint is about how underpowered it is. It’s too slow which forces me to stomp on the gas and operate at high RPM’s. I feel like I’m in everyone’s way to the point where I feel like I’m in danger. I felt nervous to drive or go anywhere in it because of this. There is too much engine and road noise. Wherever you sit it’s completely compromised, especially the driver’s seat. The back seat is too small and is accessed by stupid door handles. Cargo capacity was disappointing for my needs. Visibility is awful. Gas mileage is terrible with a small tank and short range (Prepare to become a frequent visitor at the gas pump). Like I said before, the Compass has old tech and an uninspiring fit and finish (hard and ugly plastics galore). Mine was the High Altitude model and it seemed so obsolete in terms of design and the limited capabilities of the touch screen. Strangely, the speedometer is so hard to read that I am either speeding or going too slow. Oh, when you let off the gas pedal you literally started losing speed QUICKLY, thus taking a lot of effort for the engine to pick up speed again when you put your foot back on the gas. For reliability, I had electrical issues with the third brake light and could not shift out of park. I had to have a new wire put it that ran from the fuse box to the third brake light. I never felt confident with the brakes. These issues did not set a pleasant tone for ownership when it had under 30,000 miles. I only liked that it came with remote start and heated seats. Overall, the Compass is so far in the dust compared to anything and not worth it. I just bought a new Kia Sportage and love it so much better than the Compass! I hated it so much that I only had it for ten months and put only 8,000 miles on it. I have never felt happier to get rid of it! Choose a different direction than the Compass!

I was shopping for a KIA Sorrento or the smaller version; the sitting is not comfortable, I pass by a Jeep Dealer, liked the shape and size of the vehicle and the seating was excellent; price comparable , big difference the doors are heavy, you feel secure. the KIA's , and other brands are not.

I love my new jeep compass, however, you really have to be diligent when turning corners for pedestrians, the columns at the end of the windshield are kind of wide (had the same issue with my old honda accord so i'm used to it). Drives very well just had for a week so I can't critique repairs yet. Overall, I'VE BEEN CONVERTED! No more sedans, SUVs ALL THE WAY! One year later, I'm still in love with my Jeep! However, the radio system sucks the big one. It has one of those old fashion antenna so reception on the radio is horrible. Thank goodness for CDs. Overall performance is awesome!

Buyer Beware - Electrical Issues

I bought this vehicle in July. Was very excited with my Brand New Compass until the issues started. The first electrical issues where with the screen (radio) is temperamental and will decide to not turn on. Then the issues with the engine started. When starting up the Jeep it would acting like it is running only to not have the engine starting. I have had it at the dealership three times for the service engine light. The first time they said that there were no codes and it started properly every time they had it. The next time they found a vapor leak above the fuel tank and now when it went into the shop to be fixed it now also has a cracked hose. Because of these issues they said it was causing an issue with the carburetor which cased the engine to stop?!? My car only has 2,900 miles on it!! There should not be this many issues with a Brand New car. I am greatly regretting my purchase!

If I could rate this car zero stars I would. Just leased it a week ago 4x4 latitude with all the gadgets etc. Anyway, I was driving down a busy street and It was a red light so the "start stop" system which turns off the engine at stop lights to save fuel started working (You can turn it off by hitting a button everytime you get in the car, but is that really the solution to hope this never happens again). Normally, this system has worked fine. HOWEVER, as I felt the engine turn off, all of a sudden, the car went CRAZY. The parking brake was on and I couldn't turn it off, the wheel wouldn't move, the gears would shift but they flashed, the screen turned on and off, and I COULD'NT TURN THE CAR OFF. I was sitting in the middle of a busy one way street on a green light, people were honking, and I couldn't move. I was stuck and couldn't do anything about it. I tried to hold the push to start button down but to no avail, my car WOULD NOT MOVE NOR RESTART. I was sitting in the road for about 10 minutes freaking out and about to call AAA. It was like the car was off, but it was on. Cars wouldn't move around me so it might even be possible that the emergency lights that I turned on weren't even on. Suddenly I tried the on button again and it worked. So I turned the car around and gave it to a dealer and explained my problem. They said it would be done in a day. TWO WEEKS LATER, I still do not have my car. No one could figure out what was wrong with it. They told me since the car was so "new' (It came out in feb and it's July) that they didn't have the technology to figure out what the problem was. The had to call Chrysler who STILL hasn't send over the parts. It was a computer problem, but it took them a week to figure that out, when I told them that the first day. I am very upset that a new car would just stop working like that and I could do nothing about. The dealership and even the own JEEP company didn't know anything. It's scary to think that when they get the replacement part they are going "to fix it" but yet they couldn't even figure out what was wrong with my car. Before leasing this car I checked what people had to say about it, and not once did someone say it stopped working. Well that happened to me and I want everyone to be aware before they think about the New Jeep Compass. (By the way the replacement courtesy vehicle they gave me was NOT sufficient at all. It was a base model with no backup camera, no blind spot, and no automatic headlights. The vehicle I brought in was equipt with everything, even a sun/moon roof. It would be nice if they gave me a car to drive that was somewhere close to that. If I had brought in an SRT Jeep GC would they give me a Dodge Dart?)

I haven't even had the car a week and already started having problems. My stomach hurts just thinking about this car. First, my gas tank won't fill up all the way. At first I thought it was the gas station nozzle. Went to second gas station only to have the same problem. It kept popping off like if It was full. It gets maybe 90% full. I drive home and suddenly its full... okay great! Next morning get on and it's lost a quarter overnight just by being parked! The gas milage is a joke I been driving it speed limit and it has never reached the 25MPG advertised. The computer keeps reading 16 mpg is my average... I can't believe I have to spend so much money on gas this is false advertising and I hope more people complain about this. Today my central computer screen turned off and rebooted on its own. I have to call the dealership already. The air-conditioning is like room temperature at most. I have have to use the MAX a/c button to try and cool down as I live in SoCal. My first jeep and I should have stuck with Toyota as my previous two vehicles were from there. I am completely devastated over this purchase. Seriously if you have some of these same problems email me as I am going to start asking for things to be fixed and the more people complain the faster. [contact info removed]

This car is Perfect!. 2nd gen Compass (My Latitude is 9 speed auto with many other upgrades) So fun to drive, great looking in and out. The Detailing in the interior with it curves and chrome accent gives it a solid expensive look and attention to detail look. Everything appears to be laid out perfectly. Best handing car I have drove so far. Very smooth ride on highway, and excellent on turns. Lot of technology and electronics in this car. Too soon to see how they all hold up. Very stylish exterior with nice curves with no wind noise. This is my first 4 cylinder car, and I have to say I am impressed! Power and acceleration is just enough even with 5 people in the car. I don’t know why people are complain about this, lets get real, this is not a sports car where you going to feel a gravity pull when you gun it. I think it’s plenty for a 4 cylinder and size of the vehicle. I am averaging 20 MPG, I kind of expecting a bit more since its rated 23 city and 30 highway. But its way much better than all my previous cars. The "Stop start and Go" can get annoying, however it can be disabled by a push of a button. If this car holds up as is, i just might buy it at end of my lease. Love it!

The ride is bouncy, the brake pedal is short ;having my foot dangerously slip off at times, the electric system ( radio/dashboard) goes on and off, the drivers seat is uncomfortable, the oil goes low often ( ive never seen this on a car) and the car dangerously stalls out. Has Issues

I bought my 2017 Jeep New Compass used with 4,000 miles. The car handles well, looks good, I get avg. 28 mpg which I think is great for an AWD vehicle, but I've had multiple issues with it. On the way home from the dealer I noticed a rattling in the front end, it was the driver side stabilizer bar linkage was broken. After a while I noticed the remote start would not work after sitting overnight, the AC would be on full blast when I turned the car on, headlights would turn off and on by themselves. That was all fixed with a software update that took them 2 weeks to figure out. It was doing good for almost a year, then it said I needed to service the auto stop/start feature. Dealer replaced the hood latch pin and said it may fix it. Hasn't happened since then. Most recently, I was going around a curve and the low oil pressure light came on. Checked the oil and there was just a little bit on the very end of the dipstick. It had been about 5,000 miles since my last oil change and when it was drained my husband said there was only about 2 quarts left. Motor has been burning oil since I bought it, sometimes seems worse than other times.

Just dont buy it if you are looking for a reliable vehicle for your self and your family. Look else where. I am not trying to be negative in my review but honest because I own this SUV and its been a big stress with unlimitted manufacturer recalls. Hope this hint was helpful. Don't buy that good looking unreliable JEEP COMPASS 2017

I have a 2017 Jeep Compass Latitude. For the most part I like the vehicle. However, I just found out yesterday that it is burning oil. I have 52,500 miles on it and it should not be burning oil. So, I get online and find numerous complaints of this problem with the 2017-2019 Jeep Compass models. I think Jeep needs to do a recall and fix this problem. I have owned several Jeeps and never had this kind of problem.

I love my jeep compass high altitude! It is very comfortable behind the steering wheel considering I am 6feet 5 inches tall! I have as much headroom and legroom as my Nissan Titan. The double stitched leather interior looks great. Performance and mileage are also good! Can not wait for the snow to checkout the four wheel drive! Buy one you will not be disappointed!

Almost everything in the Edmunds review is wrong as it relates to my Compass . It has real nice interior appointments with lots of room . This Jeep is loaded with accessories that are quite convenient . The 2.4 makes impressive power . The 9 speed transmission is perfectly tuned to the vehicle making it a pleasure to drive . It is quiet and responsive in all departments . The cold weather package gives thoughtful options for cold weather operation . Jeep was thoughtful enough to provide an override for the stop/start system . This is something many brands do not provide . It gives an average fuel economy of 27 mpg driven on rural roads . We are very happy with this vehicle . update --- now after 3 years of ownership we are still very pleased with this Compass . No repairs have been needed . It's still fun and pleasing to drive and still gets around 27 mpg . Very good vehicle . update --- still very happy with this Compass . It get good gas milage , it is fun to drive , and has needed no repairs to date .

Regrets and misery

I was in a bind because my old Mariner finally gave up the ghost after 15 years of solid performance. Went with a local dealer and the nightmare began with a low mileage 2017 (two years old) Seemed okay at first but wasn’t aware of start/stop option and dealer never even mentioned so you can imagine my surprise when it shuts off at a light. I think the default should be off not on but that’s me. I hate this option. Noise! If you open rear windows for the circulation and the front are closed the noise and vibration is unbearable. Had problems out of the starting gate with locks not working. Hadn’t even realized after two weeks of using it. Clicked the fob, beep happened and I walked away. Just happened one day to walk back as I forgot something and found doors did not lock. I had been leaving groceries and purchases in car while shopping and thankfully nothing got stolen. Took dealer one month and five tries to finally correct. It was a safety issue of course because if I was in a situation of danger I would have been out of luck to protect myself or if I had a kid in the backseat doors could have been opened. Had to get a new battery and most auto parts stores said nope, too hard to change on those. Dealer wanted close to 400 to replace the battery! Finally Autozone changed for me - total cost 229 for battery no charge installation I am not one to let the gas tank run low but others have told me if low fuel light is on it’s too late. And speaking of fuel - got in it yesterday and began to start up and gauges went wild telling me fuel low, and car won’t stay running. It will be back in the shop tomorrow. A little research shows it might be fuel filter we shall see. I plan to ditch this lemon first chance I get. I think Jeep should focus on making a better performing cat and spend less time embossing geckos into the frame.

Loving this car so far

I love this car! Drives heavy like a luxury vehicle and has a lot of premium finishes but didn't break my budget. Some of the technology features take a little while to get used to and I don't get as great of gas milage as I was expecting (but I rarely drive on the highway and have a hilly commute everyday) but it's been a great choice so far. Everyone that has ridden in the backseat say it's very comfortable and there is lots of room. The cargo space is smaller than I expected but since the back seats fold flat it hasn't been an issue at all.

Electrical failure

This is the only vehicle I've ever owned that needed warranty repairs... 7,000 miles, dash screen died and needed to be replaced. 12,000 miles a complete electrical failure, system needed to be completely replaced which included seats and floor removed. Both batteries died and needed to be replaced at 17,000 miles. At 18,600 miles, intermittently doors won't lock, touchscreen erratic, outside temp gauge off by 10-20 degrees. 22,000 miles, starter relay failed which shut off the engine. What's next? Jeep extols its vehicles' off road capabilities. But I pray that mine will hold together when I drive over a speed bump. Slowly.

Was a little uncertain about purchasing a Jeep Trailhawk, especially after reading some reviews. But I can tell you it’s a fabulous vehicle! The size fits between sub and the larger Jeep. With lots of room for my frame of 6”2. Most magazines complain about the 4 cylinder being under powered but really, it gets up and goes. If you want lightning speed buy a Vet. My car has everything except a sunroof so get yours loaded and you’ll never be disappointed. The car is priced right ..... Off to do a little off road 😎 My best, Joe

Not a great car for tall or wider people

We use our vehicles for delivery and are in and out of vehicle all day. The edges of the seat are very hard and hurt our legs as we exit. The seat pans are also too short and tilt upward into your thighs. If you're riding all day it's very uncomfortable. Not enough lower back support. Emerge with back and tail end aching after a day in the car. The front seat also has to slide back too far to accommodate tall people. So there's no room in rear seat for other tall people. Acceleration is poor (gutless) uphill and have to turn AC off if you want robust acceleration! Engine is very loud/deafening on acceleration, it sounds like a motorcycle!

Jeep Compass Trailhawk needs a push up the hill!

I recently test drove a 2017 Jeep Compass Trailhawk. I wanted a small, all-around SUV that would especially get me up skiing. Took it for my usual test drive up I-70 to see how it would perform on the uphill grade. With the pedal to the metal I could barely manage 70mph. Thought I was going to have to get out and push. Absolutely anemic. This vehicle might work in city traffic and for flat-landers but in the mountains, forget it.

Not all compasses are created equal. I opted for undercoating, was given a loaner which was brand new and exact model and it was great. Not so with the one I purchased. Put 400 miles on both the loaner and my car. I CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE! The car I got has issues with driver door panel warpage, wind noise/cabin noise and engine/exhaust noise, none present in the loaner vehicle. I could not swap them out.. The gas mileage stinks. 16-17 mpg when advertised average is 25mpg. The muffler is getting noisier and it is brand new. Heard there is a recall on it but nothing official yet. The dealer is evasive and is just plain lying about the noise issues. Not done pursuing remedies with the dealership or Jeep Chrysler. I hope to get some resolution. I am just sick about this. I am disabled and being taken advantage of. The Chrysler Jeep people are helping me with this, but the dealer is "independently owned and operated", which I have heard 100 times. The best we can do is discourage people from buying Jeep as there should not be these problems on a new car. Quality control? What's that?. BUY A DIFFERENT BRAND! In mourning.......

Noisy, I just bought the Jeep in November and the unconnected is already not working.. so pissed off. I did not know that a lot of people had the same problem. People even sued over defective product. Acceleration is horrible. The damn thing is so damn slow I feel like I'm driving ms. Daisy. It kills the gas because you have to press the gas pedal so hard to take off.... old fashioned looking features.. technology sucks. Which I did more research before investing. Now I am stuck in a82 my loan which the dealer failed to explain...

We leased this car because we wanted something reliable since we were having our first child. With in the first 13 months this vehicle has been in the shop 6 times for all sorts of issues. Some of them major and dangerous. Twice the start stop system malfunctioned and would randomly kill the jeep... happend the first time pulling out into traffic... the touch screen radio has been replaced twice because it would bug out the reverse camera and GPS. They still haven't resolved the wind shield wipers randomly turning on if you roll two windows down at once. I talked to a couple techs at my local shop. They say they work on these compasses daily. It shows because everytime they need a part it on back ordered for weeks. Hope you like spending hard earned money on a fully load rig just to drive a plain Jane rental half the time.

It is a great little SUV with lots of extras, great gas mileage, and a good ride. The 2.4 4-cyl. has plenty of power and performance for a mid size SUV. We are very satisfied with this vehicle for the price.

Got the car(2017) as a rental(20 days). I just can't believe I am driving a new 2017 car. I understand that it is the basic model, but come on, it is 2017, at least you should offer a usb. Cons: 1. the acceleration really sucks, I don't feel safe driving this car. 2. Abnormal noise from the front window whenever the speed is over 50.. 3. Noise from the break from time to time. 3. the oil tank is tiny, paired with a really bad MPG, had to visit the gas station often. 4. bad visibility

I unfortunately fell in love with the looks of my Trailhawk. It drove well, handled well, and got pretty good gas mileage (around 24mpg). I loved the heated seats and steering wheel and the technology. But, the computer fritzed out one day about a half mile from home and every single warning light started cycling through. It would not go back into gear and I had to get it towed. $2500 and a new computer later, all is well. Until one day driving home in Nashville traffic and it simply will not accelerate. I had to pull off (after nearly getting hit) turn the car off and wait a few minutes, restart, and it ran fine. Oh and you have to be a master mechanic just to change the batteries (yes there are 2 - one is the start/stop battery). So, as much as I loved it, it just was too unsafe with all the weird stuff that would go wrong.

My wife's dad purchased 3 jeeps all at the same time. A patriot, a Cherokee and the compass. All have the same engine. The patriot has the manual transmission. The Cherokee has the 9 speed and my wife's compass has the 6 speed. Just some context of my experience with fiat Chrysler products. Okay so within 6 months of owning it and some 4k miles or so later the manual transmission eats one of the shafts I can't remember I think it was the output shaft or something along those lines. It took 2 months to get a manual transmission because apparently they are hard to come by and had to be shipped from Pennsylvania. Okay no big deal it's a one off thing right? Nope about 2 months later it does the exact same thing again. Also around this time windshield wiper fluid started coming from the inside of the car. Keep in mind all these cars are either brand new or within a year or two old and none of them have over 30k miles at this point. The Cherokee has a transmission problem and needs it replaced so we get it replaced only for the engine to need the entire top half replaced because of lifter tick because of the engine burning oil and not maintaining proper oil pressure. The compass has been the best one no major transmission issues or engine issues...unless you count burning 2+ quarts of oil in 4k miles to be major which I do. No help from the dealership as we have the Mopar lifetime warranty on the jeeps that they only offered for a few years before they started to lose money on it. They try not to honor it and have tried to blame us before but we don't even change the oil or add coolant unless it's at the dealership so they can't throw it on us. The paint is bubbling and it has rust on the wheel wells. The fake leather seats are already starting to tear in a big way and they cheap out on the ADHESIVE FOR THE DOOR SEALS. So I'm constantly having to fix it. The transmission is starting to slip after 100k miles because the six speed is a "non serviceable" transmission according to Jeep. It's just cheap materials all the way around. It's a heavy SUV with a SEVERELY underpowered engine with a mediocre interior. All of the Jeep products we have we are only keeping because of the warranty. If we had to pay more than $100 for the warranty to cover the large items we would be out over 10k dollars now. We will never ever purchase another Stellantis fiat Chrysler Products again. The only saving grace which isn't even anything is I do think they look half decent. They aren't comfortable. They aren't good on gas. The gas tank is tiny. They aren't reliable and they are cheaply made. If you can afford one of those you can afford an older Toyota highlander or older Lexus rx350 or even Acura MDX. Don't buy one of those and support fiat crappy business practices. They sold all the cheap cars to people thinking that nothing would happen but now Stellantis is losing money because people won't purchase new jeep Dodge Chrysler cars and trucks. I think it's a great thing because these cars only deserve to see the great junk yard in the sky. Stay clear WELL clear of any of these jeeps. If you want a jeep look for an older jeep with the 4.0 inline 6 that will take care of you not these plastic pieces of crap that couldn't pull a greasy string out of a cats behind! Do not buy. Do not pass go. Jeep stands for "Just Empty Every Pocket" remember that.
