I wanted to wait till my first year of ownership was completed before offering my opinion. As of July 3rd I will have owned my 2014 Elantra SE Manual for a year and have put a little over 16,000 miles on it. My thoughts after a year is that this is a very good, solid, economical and reliable automobile and has been completely trouble free. I really like the styling and find the car very comfortable to drive. The fuel economy is fantastic. Mixed city/highway cycle returns 36.4 mpg and if I am keeping a steady 70 – 72 on the highway I consistently get 40.2. The Elantra is an exceptional value and is worthy of consideration in a new car purchase.

Engine problems

I love my Elantra and never really had any issues up until a month ago. I just hit 106000 miles and I started getting a knocking noise in the engine. I brought my car in to get checked out and they said my engine was shot and needed to be replaced. They said there was large amounts. If metal and damage to cylinder walls from wire wrist pins. I googled to see if others were having this issue at all, sure enough A LOT of people once getting over 70,000 miles started having this same issue and having engine failure. People say it should be recalled but hasn’t been. I fortunately bought a lifetime warranty so I didn’t have to pay much at all to get my new engine but unfortunately most people don’t have that warranty and I want to warn people about it.

This car is simply cheap. I bought it used with only 35,000 miles and one other owner. However, the car rattles, hesitates when accelerating, gives off a sulfur smell, and even sometimes feels as if it's on half power. I've taken it to the service shop multiple times and they always say nothing is wrong. Every time i take it in it's like none of the problems exist and they always say they didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. More recently, out of the blue my car would not start. It was not the battery, actually the battery was perfectly fine according to AAA and the shop. It made loud screeching noises and jerked so bad i thought my car was going to jerk down the hill. This has never happened before but it's like to this point i'm already fed up with it, and I'm wondering what else could possibly go wrong. It started smoking and everything then we decided to tow it to the hyundai service and repair shop, and which in return told me NOTHING was wrong with it! They said when they started working on the car it eventually started, but then cut off, and eventually started again. The car has been turning on ever since however I am afraid to drive it. They said they don't know why it's doing any of the things that it does because there's "nothing" wrong with the car. Moral of the story is, I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone, especially since if something is unordinary you might have three different hyundai dealers telling you there is nothing they can do.

This is a solid car by a solid company. I am constantly amazed by how well thought out all the features are and the high quality of workmanship. I used to rent plenty of Hyundai cars when I traveled for work, and now that I spend more time doing a standard commute, I am absolutely delighted by the fully loaded options. You simply cannot go wrong with the leather interiors and technology options crammed into this car.

I bought this car in 2014 with every accessory available. MPG has averaged 32.2 in city driving. Paint has held up well and so has the interior. Still looks brand new inside and out!! Miss my SUV so will be replacing this car with the 2016 Kia Sorento.
