2017 Honda CR-V Touring

This was a total remake year for the Touring edition and Honda hit a home run with this model. The technology is excellent. I have been driving this auto for three years and not a problem. I get 33.5 mpg on the highway. Excellent handling and it has very good acceleration.

Owned this for 1 year and traded it in on a used Audi Q5. 2 issues 1) Could never get the driver sitting position right. Steering wheel didn't telescope close enough and seat never felt right. Passenger seat was too high, non adjustable, not very comfortable. Didn't notice it on the test drive. Crusie control hunted. I've never have CC vary in speed and operate so un-smooth. It fought with the transmission logic. So it would either have too much power or not enough power. Had to hurt fuel economy. SPeed would vary by +/- 1 mph and RPM swings by 500RPM on FLAT GROUND and even on a constant downhill! My Honda Civic with same drivetrain doesn't do this at all. Cargo area and rear seat space ad HUGE. Best in class and probably rival full size SUV's and full size luxury cars. Really nice back seat. Automatic Climate control wasn't very accurate and we constantly had to make temperature adjustments. Again, my Honda Civic works much better. Engine was a great compromise with plenty of power and great economy. Never felt underpowered. But the transmission could use to hold gears a little more even if it gives up some acceleration. Too responsive. Overall, I'd prefer a good 7 speed DCT or 8 or 9 speed conventional automatic. On my Honda Civic, the CVT is a better match. GET THE HONDA OEM STEERING WHEEL. Cost $600 to have it dealer installed. Don't know why this isn't standard on EX-L and above in the USA. It is in Canada.

Car rides more like an upscale SUV. 2017 updates are excellent. I compared the CR-V to Mazda CX-5 and went with the CR-V for extra cabin space ESP trunk area. This car is so much fun to drive. I love the technology and Apple CarPlay.

This is my fourth Honda. I especially love this one because it is an SUV. I had a small Chevy pickup before this. I helped supply donated cardboard boxes to a church food program. Having the SUV made it easier than carrying the boxes in the back of a pickup. I could get as many boxes in the back of the SUV as in the truck, but the best advantage is that I don't have to worry about the boxes getting wet in the rain. I can leave them in my vehicle overnight without having to unload them when I worried about the weather. It is roomy, comfortable, and it gets excellent mileage.

Piece of crap

Unhappy customer, 11/14/2019

Nothing but dead battery problems since I purchased this car. 6 dead batteries in 2 years. Ongoing electrical and dead battery issues. Honda Corp is no help, they no longer in my opinion stand behind their product. This is my 6th Honda, never even one problem with the 5 others I owned, but, this one is nothing but problems. Just keep towing it to the dealer to get battery recharged, as instructed by Honda Corp. They say as long as the dealer can jump start it, then it is not considered an ongoing or recurring problem. The dealer believes that there is an underlying electrical problem, that they cannot find. I owe 3 more years on this piece of crap.Unreliable and unsafe car. Honda Corp has really crappy customer service. I was a loyal Honda customer, never would have even thought about purchasing another brand of automobile. My opinion has drastically changed. I will NEVER purchase another Honda again in my lifetime. Plus, must mention, that the dealer did check the version of software that was in my vehicle, according to the dealer the version I had was for a CRV 2017 LX, I do not have an LX, I have an EX,AWD. The dealer did a software update, and said this may or may not fix the problem. I am left to wonder was the wrong software put on my vehicle as it came off of the assembly line. I will never know, Honda Corp had no response to my question regarding that. If you have this vehicle and a problem with the battery always going dead, look at Honda Service Bulletin TSB#A17-032, this might be an interesting read for you. Dealer says they will keep looking for the problem, But my warranty is going to run out soon and Honda Corp states that even though there is a service record of ongoing problems with my vehicle, they may choose NOT to cover the problem after my warranty expires in Feb 2020. It is at Honda discretion.

Rear Differential Failure at 29K

MarylandCRVOwner, 02/06/2019
2017 Honda CR-V Touring 4dr SUV AWD (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

In December 2018, my 2017 Honda CR-V Touring model started making this weird shuddering noise/motion when I was making tight turns such as a right or left into a parking spot. I took the car to the dealer on December 22, 2018 for an oil change and told them about the noise. After performing the oil change, the service adviser stated that they could not recreate the noise. As I continued to drive the car through the rest of December and January, the noise and behavior became worse. I took the car to an independent tech that was in my neighborhood just to ask them about it. They checked the car and let me know that this was likely an issue with the rear differential. I took the car to Honda today (February 6) and they confirmed that the rear differential has failed. They reported that metal particulate was present in the differential fluid. A new differential is being shipped in and will be installed tomorrow under warranty. Note that I did have the rear differential fluid changed at 15K miles per manufacturer's recommendation.

Small Suv but Big in storage and safety features

This is a great choice and a great value if your looking for large cargo space and all the bells and whistles on the safety features on a small SUV. I think it is fun to drive, nimble, very short turning radius, and quick to respond and brake. The music sounds much better than rated. Very comfortable. Cons for me are the 14 gallon fuel tank, I'd prefer 17 gallons to not have to stop as much. The Honda CRV gives a warning to refill at 11 gallons useage which is a little early. Very happy with my purchase. Great value. update After 5+ years, the car has needed zero repairs. It’s averaged 28.5 mpg with mostly city diving- I prefer taking the fuel savings mode off for zippier performance. I have appreciated the touring models features. I use adaptive cruise control daily along with lane assist. It works great in stop and go traffic but I wish it would start braking about 50 feet sooner. Very comfortable seating.

Bought It and Love It

Donna in New Mexico, 07/15/2017

I was driving a '98 Honda civic HX around town and a 2002 Acura MDX for the interstate. It was time to consider just one car that would satisfy the features of my old cars. I usually buy used but decided to look at the 2017 Honda CRV. I briefly considered the RAV4 but vetoed that. The reviews of the CRV impressed me enough that I bought it sight unseen and no test drive (who does that!). I got the color and model I wanted. I now have a little over 2000 miles on it and have been very satisfied. Pros: not cramped. I was afraid that coming from the MDX the CRV would feel cramped but it isn't bad at all. The trunk area handles my large dog easily. Really like the ease of dropping the rear seats forward. Like the ease of console and touch screen. Everything is within reach and intuitive. There is enough power to pass on the interstate. Was pleasantly surprised at the quietness of the ride and ease of steering. I live in rural southwest so keeping a car clean is a challenge. The desert sand color doesn't show the dirt like some other colors would. Overall it is big enough for the interstate but small enough to drive around town. The capless gas tank was a welcome surprise. With all the technology and ease of pushing buttons I laughed out load when I found the manual lever to open the gas door. Over all the safety features are awesome. Cons: I had real wood in my Acura so could have done without the plastic wood. Just doesn't work for me. The cruise control doesn't hold well on the downhill. It creeps up to 5 miles over the set speed. There is an uneven surface on the back seats when they are let down. I lower them for my dog and the fabric stretched out of shape when she stood on the seats. I am not too crazy about the leather covered steering wheel. The stitching is bothersome.

Fuel in oil

If you haven't read all of the horrible regarding the fuel leaking into the oil.. do so now! Honda is well aware of the problem and will not do a damn thing about it! Changing the oil every 2-3k miles is ridiculous and will not actually solve the problem! I have spent more money on my 2017 Honda CR-V trying to get it fixed only to be told the problem can't actually be fixed because it's an error on Honda's part! DO NOT buy a 2017 Honda CR-V if you want to live headache and frustration free when it comes to worrying about your vehicle!

I had a long checklist of criteria and this hit the mark. I am still discovering things that this does! For example, I did not realize that the highbeams came on automatically and then reset when necessary. What a great feature! I needed something with power and good gas mileage and this definitely fits that bill.

Engine issues spoil an otherwise great suv

There’s a lot to love about the 2017 cr-v. Attractive design, fantastic gas mileage, comfortable and roomy interior for its class, comfortable front seats, and a peppy engine. But the engine is also the fly in the ointment. Mine suffers from the oil dilution problem and Honda, while admitting there’s a problem, seems incapable of correcting it. There was a “fix” in 2018, which was just anew thermostat and a reprogramming of the engine has done little to solve the problem. The oil fill level on the dipstick still goes up as you drive. I’ve cut the oil change interval in half to try and help the situation. (At my cost obviously). On the plus side, the cr-v now has 140,000 kms on it, and hasn’t packed it in due to the problem. The fuel injection failed at 120,000 kms. It had to be replaced at a cost of approx $2400. Fortunately I’d purchased the extended warranty. Another negative is the infotainment system. It’s very awkward and unintuitive to use. Compared to the system in my Ford F-150, it’s a lost cause. I wouldn’t recommend the 2017 or 2018 model years.

There were some hiccups with some of the electronics about 6 months into owning my new CRV back in 2017. As expected my dealer took prompt care of the issue and since then it has been trouble free. I get 32+ mpg around town & 37-39 mpg on interstate travel. The Touring model is worth the money; it fits in everwhere.

Thank God for Extended Warranties

Was all good until it hit 82k miles. All the warning lights came on. Trip #1 to service, found nothing. All warning lights came back. Trip #2, changed all the plugs. One day later, engine popped, went into limp mode, all warning lights on. Trip #3, changed all the injectors. Been good since, now @ 84k the air conditioner died (and it's 87 degrees). So what will I do after they repair that under the extended warranty? Probably time to ditch it. Sad, because it is a nice driving vehicle. Always been dealer serviced and all up-to-date. Been reading around different sites, and we're also suffering all sorts of issues with my daughters 2015 Fit. I think Honda quality has slipped. Very subjective, but don't want a vehicle I can't trust.

This car (and maybe an angel or two) saved my life! I owned it for 6 months and absolutely loved driving it. The sensoring features on it kept me awake on my long commute to work. The off road departure, lane assist and cruise control pacing were/are a necessity for me now. I can't imagine driving without it. I was in a wreck where I rear-ended a vehicle sitting still on a dark, two-lane busy state route. I popped up over a hill and there was the car. There was not enough time to stop. My air bag deployed as I slammed into the back of the vehicle. The whole front end of the CRV was crushed and crumpled up to the windshield. I was perfectly fine - only one minor scratch on my hand. The amazing thing was I didn't even feel like I'd been in a crash. I didn't even get sore. The front end of the Honda totally absorbed the impact of the crash. After my new car was totaled, I bought another Honda CRV - 2018.

We had 10,000 mile on this vehicle when all of a sudden the dash lit up like a Christmas tree, loss of power steering on a busy interstate. We called Honda’s road side assistance numbers and they were very busy empathetic, had a wrecker to use in less than 2 hours. The vehicle was towed to our dealer of choice and it was found that a part was not put together right during assembly. Warranty covered everything. The infotainment screen is outdated, slow and glitchy. The seats are comfortable but the vehicle needs more sound dampening material for road noise.

This car offers nearly everything that we were looking for. The only thing that it lacks is height adjustable passenger seat. None of Honda's vehicles offer this feature at any level. Competitors (although not all) do offer this as standard equipment. Handles well in all kinds of weather. Rides comfortably on long trips. Update - two years later, we still really like the CRV. At first we were a bit leery of all the electronics as we had traded in a ten year old Accord that had none. Now, we appreciate them, especially lane assist and follow. The seats are very comfortable, the drivers side more so as it has height adjustment. The vehicle has done everything we wanted one to do including hauling things. We have had a glitch in the screen. Honda, as usual, has been responsive to our issue.

The first and most importan quality of this car is such amount of features that you can get on EX Trim for a low cost; even I compared the safety features of this with other luxurious cars that not include them. For compact SUV I have to say that pretty spacious inside and finish looks made of quality materials. Very comfortable, good fuel efficiency and enough power. After more than 3 years of ownership I have no complaints and no mechanical issues so far. Update: 5 years now and I’m still very happy with it. The oil dilution problem was fixed on dealership at not cost and the only complaint so far is the infotainment system that once on 4 to 5 months interval gets freeze and we have to reboot it

I bought certified 2017 CR-V LX from dealer two weeks ago. I’ve only drove 250 miles. No issues so far, I really like it. Upd.: it has been 1,5 years. So far only battery died. Another thing - I feel like there is some “car smell”. I am aware of oil dilution isssue (which mostly occurs with EX/EXL, but no 2.4 L LX), but I don’t think I smell gas. My wife does not smell anything and call me crazy. Otherwise, all good. Although these planned 30k and 45k maintenance are costly (like 500$ each).

CRV's just work

I have fallen into a pattern of trading up at each generation change. We had a 2012 EX AWD and drove it 80,000 completely trouble free miles. While never the absolute best at any single aspect, Crv's just seem to do anything and everything that comes up so darn well. Same is proving to be true with this 2017 model. It is so much more of a road cruiser than the previous model.

This was a better upgrade from our falling apart constantly dying 2009 Saturn Vue hybrid but it started to fall apart. The base model has barely anything to offer. Most of the time my phone wouldn't connect to my speakers. We drove this car across the country so i could have it for college and the drive was fine. Buyer beware of the uncomfortable seating for long car rides in the LX model. This is not made for tall people in the drivers side. The car drained it's gas super quickly. The battery died several times but actually just wasn't connected properly meaning the battery would disconnect from car randomly. The car doors felt cheap to close and there was a loud wind noise on the freeway. Honestly only made it to 18k before we traded it in for a new car. Upgraded to honda civic ex 2020. Not a CR-V fan anymore even though it looked nice.

Honda is plastic

I have less than 35,000 miles on my crv. The plastic button on the gear shifter broke off. Honda has instructed dealers to replace all buttons on crv`s on their lots. They have not issued a recall just that service bulletin. Online research shows that this broken button is a widespread problem. Honda corporate wants me to pay $100 to have service document for Honda corporation to "consider replacing". That is "consider it" to replace a $20.00 part. This is just a small piece of broken plastic smaller than my thumb. What a rip off.

Retired engineers review

I have owned the car for two years. Two warranty items, battery died, replaced for free. Plastic piece in shifter cracked and failed. Dealer replaced in a few minutes. The turbo engine and CVT are impressive compared to normally aspirated step transmission power trains. The turbo has a lot of torque and the car just accelerates quietly and smoothly. It takes a little getting used to because it is stepless. Some designs and options try to make it feel like step transmission which from an engineers perspective makes no sense.

A/C and Battery Defects

First I had a defective battery at around 6000 miles. I drove it to the dealer because all the control panel lights came on and the brake pedal jerked repeatedly when I pressed the ignition. Dealer replaced the battery. Then around 12,000 miles the ac stopped working. Dealer said it was a cracked ac compressor and kinked wires so they replaced the entire system. Since then it's been good, but I'm still getting the extended HondaCare warranty from Hyannis Honda (cheapest) in case something else comes up. Love the safety features.

The interior trim is not wood as I was told on the brown paneled part of the trim. Make sure you get into a class for new buyers. I bought my CR-V in June and still trying to get in a class in now mid August. Not happy about this at all.

This is not my favorite vehicle I have owned, but it will do. When you buy it be prepared for the hard sell of all the "extras" that you don't need. That alone has soured me on the car. It's comfortable and relatively quiet. Am still waiting on the title- previous new cars I have purchased I received the title right away and was able to get plates, now I will either have to waste part of a vacation day or take up part of my Saturday standing in line at the BMV. Need to have the car a little longer to determine reliability, ease in handling during inclement weather, etc. Truth be told, wish I bought a Suburu.

Car is great. When nearing a turn with the nav it tells you when you are 1 mile away and 200 ft away, nothing in between. I have already missed a few turns due to this. They should add a 1000ft warning.

Just what we were looking for as an additional family driver. Small enough to zip around town and large enough to take a trip and hold some luggage. However, the much publicized unburned fuel issue is real. The car smells like rich fuel at idle, and the oil is saturated with additional fuel. Dealer won’t do anything unless codes are set from OBD2. Honda has an engine crisis with that turbo that they will not admit to, and are screwing loyal customers who expected more. I feel like I bought a liability now and likely will get rid of it. Honda should be ashamed of how they are handling this issue.

I have owned four Honda CR-Vs before this one. The all performed admirably. This one, however, outperforms the others by a wide margin. The new safety features are outstanding. There is collision avoidance, lane departure warning, and logical cruise control to name a few. I am completely satisfied with this automobile.

We love the safety features on the 2017 CR-V. The car is very comfortable. Our first time driving it was on a 6 hour ride and it was a pleasure. The heated seats are great for our cold, mountain climate. So far we are averaging 29 MPG. We are very happy with our choice.

Best SUV for the city

I wanted an SUV that was short and had a backup camera so that I could easily park it. The CR-V fit the bill. I couldn't find my preferred color in 2WD, so I got the AWD version. Gas mileage doesn't meet up with the EPA expectation, but is great for any SUV. I'm most impressed with how effortless it is to drive - easy steering, excellent brakes. Another standout is the Apple CarPlay. Its integration is the simplest, most straight-forward that I've seen. The safety features are great, as are little things like the cap-less gas filler, heated front seats, rear cover that moves up to make a flat surface with the rear seats folded down, etc.

Don't bother looking at anything else. I've owned a number of cars throughout my life and this unconditionally is the best vehicle I have ever owned. There's nothing like getting into a vehicle, especially the back seat, and you don't have to have anybody make adjustments up front. This is huge especially to someone who is 6 foot 2 inches tall. Cargo capacity, don't even think about it. Plenty of room. I am getting consistently 30 miles per gallon City Highway combined . But, don't take my word for it check one out of your Honda dealership.

I owned previously a 2014 EX CRV and recently made the best purchase ever of a 2017 EXL-w Navigation CRV and the difference was 180 degrees. Comfort, Reliability, much more quiet in interior, trunk way better, finally powered trunk! very comfortable leather seats and in the coldest weather we,ve ever had in Houston the heated seats worked excellent! 10000% happier and very happy with my new CRV.
