Did Honda Get the New Civic Right?

tholemu, 05/04/2016
2016 Honda Civic LX 2dr Coupe (2.0L 4cyl 6M)
22 of 23 people found this review helpful

The new Civic was entirely off my radar until a week or two ago, which is somewhat odd (or perhaps a testament to how bored I'd become with them) considering I've owned only Hondas since my first car in high school, a 1988 CRX DX. Following the CRX was a 1994 Civic DX coupe, then a 2012 Civic Si Sedan, and next a 2013 Fit Sport (automatic, ugh). I'd always looked forward to owning an Si after driving and modding the CRX and Civic, but was somewhat disappointed when acquiring the 2012 Si. Its departure from the old school Civic was quite noticeable, and while performance wasn't terrible, it just didn't feel like a Civic should, in my opinion. I plan on making this a long-term review, updating once a week or so. [5/4/2016] Yesterday I drove home the 2016 Civic LX coupe equipped with the 6-speed gearbox, and after a few miles behind the wheel it seemed as though finally a new Civic had a bit of the grit of the previous generations coupled with the convenience and comfort I now appreciate more than I would have 15 years ago. The driving position feels natural, as does the operation of controls, pedals, the gear shift, etc. I'm quite surprised by how lively the 2.0L (K20C2) engine is, especially in the low-mid RPM range. It's not a speed demon by any stretch of the imagination, but for getting around town and commuting to and from work while also getting good gas mileage, I don't see how this doesn't fit the bill. The gearbox seems pretty crisp, maybe better than the 2012 Si. There's been some speculation about which engine will appear in the Si and Type R models for 2017, and I feel as though the K20 coupled with forced induction would make a solid power plant. I'm a bit confused about the actual compression ratio of the K20C2, since I've seen both 9.8:1 and 10.8:1 reported in different places. Regardless, I am pleased with the configuration. After comparing some of the numbers between a 2000 Civic Si coupe (curb weight: 2,612 lbs, 160hp/111ft-lbs torque, 22/29 city/highway MPG) and the 2016 Civic LX coupe (curb weight: 2,739 lbs, 158hp/138ft-lbs torque, 31/41 city/highway MPG), they are actually quite close in terms of power and weight on paper. What's very noticeable is the dramatic increase in fuel economy with the new model. I'm quite pleased with the vehicle after the first couple of days, but who knows what will happen down the line. I'll continue to post updates periodically as I get in more drive time. [5/10/2016] It's been one week to the day since taking possession of the Civic and I am struggling to find anything I don't like. The vehicle, plain and simple, feels solid. It should though, right? I've logged just about 200 miles -- she's still a newborn. So in that respect, yeah, I would be seriously concerned if there were issues or things I noticed that didn't seem right. However, compared to the ride quality and cabin noise of my 2013 Fit, the Civic far exceeds it. This could be to the numerous changes to the suspension and chassis components (new rear suspension, bushings, stabilizer bars, rear damper brackets, etc.)*, and only time will tell if the durability holds up. Regarding fuel economy, I am averaging right around 31mpg. With that said, I can say with confidence that if I spend more time babying it and trying to get better mileage it will be quite easy to break into the mid and upper 30's. Even when accelerating mildly to keep pace at highway speeds the mpg gauge hangs around 40mpg. The Fit would average about 30mpg, which always disappointed me. The Civic is far more enjoyable to drive and will almost certainly achieve more greater efficiency around town and on the highway. Prior to my Fit I always owned vehicles manual transmissions. I really, really dislike automatic transmissions, so coming back to a manual has been quite refreshing. What's more refreshing is the satisfying feel and sound (yes, there is some degree of a nice "click") of shifting gears with this particular gearbox. It may not be as crisp as what you would find from the factory in the S2000s, but for the base model Civic, literally the cheapest Civic the dealer had on the lot, I could not be more happy. Back when I had my 1988 CRX and 1994 Civic DX coupe, I longed for a close ratio 6-speed, and to see Honda mate this gearbox with the K20C2 is quite encouraging. It feels as though the engine is allowed to work as designed by not having it coupled with a longer geared 5-speed. If there's one thing that has baffled and frustrated me a bit it would be the Bluetooth system. It could be an issue with my phone (Galaxy S4), but I have encountered pairing issues a few times. Either the phone will fail to connect over and over when the Civic seemingly rapidly attempts to connect and send a verification code, or it will only connect to phone audio and not media audio. A few minutes of trying to rediscover and pair the devices usually fixes the issue. *Source:Official 2016 Civic Coupe Press Kit

Liked the shoe color, so I bought the matching car

I love the catchy bright green color which just happens to match my favorite pair of shoes. This replaces my 1999 Toyota Camry Solara, which I drove for 265,000 miles and 17 years 9 months. Although I was very happy with the Solara, any new car is going to impress after driving such an old car. I think the Civic Coup Touring is a great value. The total cost was very close to the Solara even though car prices have gone up in the last 18 years. The Civic is missing a couple of features (power driver seat and garage door control) that I liked in the Solara, but adds many new features. The sound system that comes with the touring trim level is better than the Solara SLE's excellent sound system. The integration with Google Maps navigation via Android Auto is excellent. I'm so glad I don't have to use Garmin navigation in order to use the large dash display. I'm lucky that my Samsung phone is a bit old, so it does not have the new Android operating system which has lots of reported issues with Android Auto. I had to migrate my music library from Apple to Google because I cannot use both my iPod Touch and my Samsung phone at the same time. Google Play Music isn't quite as good as Apple's but I'm happy I was forced to move my ~15,000 songs to Googles cloud servers. The cruise control feature of slowing down for the car in front of you demonstrates fairly primitive self-driving technology. It tends to slow abruptly, especially when you are approaching a vehicle turning left or right from your lane. I keep using it a lot to try to understand when it's best to enable it and when it's best to disable it.

Great car but cloth seats s--k!

Great MPG and pick up in highway. Cloth seats with the foam like touch are cheap and hot on back & fanny. This car would be great if it wasn't for the seats. Will give more info on seat material soon. Suggest you Spend extra on leather seats.

Best Civic Coupe ever

Samuel Newman, 05/09/2016
2016 Honda Civic EX-L 2dr Coupe (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT)

Pros: - great MPG, mine average is 37 for NYC-NJ-LI; - coupe looks very good - people are still staring and asking about the car; - acceleration, especially in Sport mode; - fun to drive. Cons: - constant issues with Android Auto on Samsung Galaxy Note 4 - I'm an IT guy and still can't make it work properly. - CVT is not smooth. When I slow down fast almost to stop and then release brake (mostly in traffic) - feels like stroke in CVT. Audi's 1.8T 2004 CVT feels much better that Civic 1.5T 2016 - manual front seats for EX-L? come on, it's 2016

This car could be great, but I have had constant computer and electrical issues as well as problems with the third brake light housing coming down within the first week of purchase. I have found, per my dealership, that every coupe with a third brake light has the housing coming down. The electrical issues included the passenger window and sunroof not working randomly. The display would stop working for several minutes at a time, beeping constantly during this period. I have had multiple computer updates and this car had been in the shop for over 30 days total. The basic response from the dealership was, "That's what you get for buying the first year of a new vehicle." Update: After 2 years of ownership and multiple electrical issues, I finally traded it in for a 2018 Si. It was still having USB issues, and two weeks before I traded it in, the entire computer went black for about 10 seconds. I was over it at that point.

I would never own another Honda

I bought the 2016 Civic Lx to replace a 2012 Civic that the electrical system failed on. I thought it was just a rare issue, boy was I wrong. The first week I owned the 2016 Civic the third break light shroud fell and block view through the rear windshield. The local dealer tried to repair it multiple times, but it just kept falling down. It took threatening Honda Corporate USA with the lemon law to get it fixed. The car was good over all for a few months, but then began having strange random issues. The trunk would open on it's own, windows would roll themselves down when no one was around and the car was locked. By the time it was a year old the Air Conditioning stopped working, a few weeks later one of the key fobs completely failed, replacing the battery in it did nothing. The final event was when the car caught fire sitting in the driveway. It was locked and had not been driven for hours. Honda took no responsibility what so ever for any of the problems, and I lost thousands of dollars I had invested in the car.

Handling is down from previous generation

Evan Lau, 07/24/2016

I've had my 2dr Civic coupe (1.5L turbo) for 3 weeks. I spent a lot of time in the beginning setting and resetting the programs like auto door lock (which doors to lock) or unlock, auto ignition as some were not practical or suited to me. With the "drive by wire" steering, there's a somewhat disconnected feel to the steering compared to previous generation Civics. The car is also wider and longer than the previous generation, so steering control did not feel as precise and the tail wagged during hard corner. Pick up is uninspiring below 50mph. The turbo only kicks in at speeds above 3,500 rpm and usually above 50mph. It rarely kicks in in the economy mode. To feel the turbo, turn off the "Eco" button, but your fuel economy will suffer. Best of all is the fuel efficiency - I drove ~240 miles on the highway on a hot 90 degree day with air conditioner on, at 74mph, and averaged 41mpg. It's that incredible for a non-hybrid.

After owning several Honda's I left the brand a couple years ago and leased a Lexus. With the introduction of the 2016 Civic I returned to the Honda brand and purchased a 2016 Civic Coupe in touring trim - which is loaded to the gills. I couldn't be happier to be rid of my Lexus because I now have a car with more features for half the cost, and the interior, noise and harshness levels, and ride quality all mimic a car costing thousands more. Everything seems really well put together, the only complaint I have thus far is the drivers seat is a bit firm - but after a leather treatment it seems a bit more flexible. I'd definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone seeking a premium coupe loaded with luxury, tech, and safety features for not a lot of money. Reliability has been first rate!

Loving my coupe...the green machine!

I am truly amazed at the improvements over the last generation! This car swayed me from an Audi A3. It is classy, refined, agile and quiet. I chose the LX because it has all the features i need without alot of fluff. It has loads of technology, even in the base model. I love how it handles and the Sport mode gives the engine a nice growl! There are discounts on this hot coupe, so haggle when you purchase! The only changes might be adding sport paddle shifters ( a little inconvenient shifting from sport to drive mode) and making mud flaps standard to keep my beauty clean! (I am adding them myself, as I bought them with the car and did not want to pay for installation. ) After 18 months of ownership, I still love this car! I recently tested the hatchback, which was released after my purchase. I think the coupe is better, unless cargo space is a top concern... After 48 months, still love the Civic! A/C condenser went out, and was replaced free by Honda and warranty on system bumped up to 10 years. I still would like the hatchback, and will probably get one when I am ready to let go of this jewel... Sold the car in September 2020 because used car values skyrocketed and i had another car to drive.

I bought it in April 2016. Only 1 to 2 of this model per dealer since the Coupd is so new. I shop around for s nice, tech, fairly economic car... I am 20 yrs old... I had a used car prior to buying this one. I am still in college, live with parents, work part time.... I really love and enjoy my car a lot. Highly recommended.

I purchased my 2 door Coupe July 23, 2016 and its been great ever since! I love the interior and the exterior seem like a luxury coupe. I was so excited to test drive, I totally forgot to see if it had a CD player, so after signing all the papers and driving it off the lot, I realized it didnt have one! I still love and enjoy it though and my ONLY COMPLAINT is this third brake light always falling down UGH!!! I've had it replaced but the dealership says its a design flaw and I called Honda and they said they are working on a remedy. The car isn't the most quiet ride but smooth enough..... I'll give it 4 STARS!!

Obviously when buying a coupe, you have to expect a little bit of a rougher ride vs. a sedan (let's call it a sport suspension) plus I think on the EX models with the wider tires you sacrifice a little road comfort as well. Having said that, the ride is still very smooth - in my opinion much smoother than the Mazda 3 hatchback I test drove. I had a 2005 Civic sedan, and Honda has really worked out the road noise issue significantly. It doesn't have the horsepower of a Camaro or a Mustang, but it has the look and feel of a sports car with luxuries galore for $24K. And thanks to Edmund's I got a great deal buying the car with no stressful haggling with the dealer. I have only had the car for 4 weeks, but I am averaging 38 mpg - I do mostly highway driving; acceleration for merging into traffic and changing lanes is no problem. The steering feels tight and in the rain I have had no issues with traction. I made my friend ride in the backseat and she said it was extremely roomy and comfortable which really surprised her (it was a bit of an argument for her to sit back there). It's a Honda so let's assume the long term reliability will be excellent. The new 2016 styling makes it an extremely sexy car inside and out that puts a smile on my face every time I drive her. After 1 month I am still in love with this car and have had no second thoughts or regrets about my purchase.

I have this car in Energy Green and it turns heads every day, I receive compliments on a daily basis. The leather interior is very nice. I traded my 2006 Civic EX for this one and the cabin space is HUGE in the 2016 but the trunk is much smaller. The downside of this car is the glitchy infotainment screen, it started not working within the first week! The dealership passes the blame on Honda, Honda customer service blames the dealership. I am waiting to get my headunit replaced and hopefully this will gix the problem. You can google to find more info about this problem. Bottom line is that this is a sexy, sporty car for under 25k with fun bells & whistles that are sure to excite.

Fun car to drive with great acceleration. The dealer added a body kit to this black Civic Touring and it looks like the 2017 SI. It didn't sell in 2016 and the dealer wanted to sell it. When I first saw the car this past weekend (Labor Day 2017) I wanted it. It has everything and then added styling. The car was discounted so I got a pretty good deal. My wife thought we needed a sedan but now that she has driven the car, she is very happy with the coupe. It is a one of a kind Touring since it has the body kit added. Had the car for a year and I'm amazed at the gas mileage. Driving around town the car averages 32-36 mpg. Very pleased with it's performance after two years. Plan on keeping this one for along time.

I will start off by saying if you are cross shopping this Civic with other cars in the class, it will not be the cheapest. However, mark my words, it will not drive the cheapest, feel the cheapest, or look the cheapest in the slightest. This car is such an absolute bang for your buck, I don't understand why anyone would get anything other than the newly redesigned Civic. It will crush the Cruze, Sentra, Mazda3, Camry and really any other car in this segment, did I mention I can get upwards of 44MPG's in my car? If your a research based consumer like I was before I made my purchase, I will also invite you to check out the 5-Year Cost to own on the other vehicles in this class, the Civic, much like every other Honda is without question, the valedictorian.

I traded my Honda Civic LXP coupe. Seat comfort wasn't that great, in fact I had to buy a cushion. Interior and exterior materials did not seem to be of good quality. Radio system wasn't very good sounding. Very good gas mileage but that is where it stops for pro's. Difficult to get in and out of backseat.

Poor Acceleration on Steep Hills

Looking and comparing between Honda Civic LX with CVT XMSN and Mazda 3. The engine of civic roared when climbing up a hill without increasing or maintaining the original speed. The engine rpm didn't go higher than about 3400 and the car slowed down while climbing small hills. I think this is an attribute of CVT. I also rode a Toyota Prius in Pennsylvania that has CVT as well and it reminded me of that. Also, Mazda 3 has much more technology features than civic. I found civic interior dull and flat as compared to Mazda 3. I think I'm going with Mazda 3 since these two cars are very close with every other feature and Mazda 3 has traditional 6 speed automatic XMSN.

Traded in a Golf GTI to get a 2016 Honda Civic 1.5 T coupe. I had been disappointed with the direction Honda had been going with their Civics and even the Si version. Numb steering and not great handling .This new iteration (as of 2016) was a delight on the test drive. The seating position, the seats and most of all the steering feel and weight. Yes in a Civic . Absolutely gratifying. I have had the car for 2.5 years and it is a joy to drive everyday. I did get rid of the OEM Conti tires which were horrible in the snow and put on MIchelins which have been fantastic in all seasons here in the NE. The entertainment system would keep crashing with blue tooth so I went with a wire connection to my iPhone (turned off the Bluetooth) to use Apple Car play and it has been flawless since. I hope Honda keeps this up and continues to inject driving fun into its cars like the old days in the 80s and 90s.

Shop around long distance in order to negotiate with your local dealer. I hade lease price differences of $50/month, comparing apples to apples. I live in Virginia, and Koons Honda was the most forthright dealer here and Herb Chambers and Weymouth Honda in Massachusetts. The local dealer, Pohanka, wasn't even in the ball park, until I leveraged the other prices. Koons and Chambers were very nice and in hindsight, I regret not having purchased the car from Sunny at Koons in Manassas. This company followed up with a personal conversation from the General Manager, interested in finding out why I didn't use them. The dealer I bought the car from, Pohanka, didn't even come over and say thanks, didn't show us the controls or review the car and let me go with an empty tank of gas...

This is my 3rd honda, 2nd civic ex-l. i had a 2015 civic ex-l and traded in for 2016 civic ex-l. I am so sorry i did that and paying a lot more for no difference in upgrade. the trunk is small, no power seats on the drivers side. I think they cut the size a lot! I think in 3 years going to change to a different make car. I am so sorry i traded my 2015, : ( big big big mistake!!! only thing good it has 8 speakers and turbo and faster than the 2015 and has Sirrus! that is it. Don't waste your money.

People say I have a tendency to complain a bit. Well, it's never about my Honda Civic. What can I say. It's by far the best car I have ever owned and in the past half century I have owned quite a few.

Engine performance is awesome but one problem I have seen so far is the rear center light cover kept falling off. I was told that there is a recall and a new adhesive is being developed to correct the issue, otherwise overall it's great for single guys and gals.

LUV MY CIVIC EX-T

This is a great car to drive and enjoy overall. I have the Turbo that works quickly to reach 60mph and beyond. Great looking car and interior, with a plenty of room in the truck for shopping, suitcases, or golf bag. I wish I would've otten power seats just because of the many different positions. Don't get me wrong, the seats are comfotable, just my own preference. The steering wheel volume control is new, but placed beside another control which I have push instead many times. I would highly recommend this Civic EX-T for those wanting dependability and great looks. This is a winner design for Honda.

Love this car! Handles great, fast pickup, cute design, only problem I've had is the touch screen went black and it was difficult to get back. Not sure how I did it. So far has not happened again.

It's FAST! Have to admit, I bought it for the looks but when I found out I could get a turbo charged engine, my fate was sealed.
