Best Compact for Commuting...go with EX Trim

Put aside the sporty and nifty handling of the Mazda3 and Ford Focus because what most commuters want for the 5-day grind is a smooth riding highway vehicle with low cockpit noise, and that's where the Honda Civic excels. I have been getting 33 mpg combined in city/highway driving or about 400 miles before the next refuel. On really long highway trips with the ECON button on, I have hit 40 mpg! The EX trim is where the value lies for commuters...rear disc brakes, auto headlights and "pothole friendly" 16 inch tires with beautiful alloy rims.

I just picked up one of these. Would have never considerd a civic but the dealer near me was having great deals on them. Boy am i glad I went to look. The 2014 Civic is smooth, large on the inside and very fuel efficent. Everything is put together very well and the car is very solid. I never lack for power and hope to have this car for many years to come.

We got a great deal on a lease and traded in a Prius that needed a new hybrid battery pack. Honda has always been my wife's favorite. This is our third new Honda. All you do is change the oil and put in gas. You can't kill it. It just keeps going. We have the base LX, but it is still a beautiful car with excellent fit and finish. It doesn't lack any features that we miss. The interior is pretty with hard ugly plastics mostly banished and replaced with soft colorful materials. Gas mileage is great and we achieved the E.P.A. estimate of 39 m.p.g.on a long highway trip. Upholstery stains easily. Too much road noise seeps into the cabin. Plastic wheel covers are not attractive.

My second Civic one year later

Excellent value for the money, Honda reliability and resale. CVT takes some getting used to, very good MPG with or without the Econ feature activated, awesome highway car! This is my second Honda Civic. I replaced my 1994, also purchased new, one year ago. I love this car, especially the back up camera and handling. The ride over some city streets is a bit choppy but the OEM tires probably contribute to that. I find it a joy to drive on the highway without the road noise or driving fatigue that I experienced with my smaller old Civic. The CVT shifts smoothly and is different than a conventional automatic transmission, but I have not had any of the problems that some people mention. I like the sound system and being able to interface my IPad with the audio display. The build quality is solid without any squeaks or rattles. I would recommend Honda to anyone thinking about purchasing a new car.

This is my 74 car !! Went back to a Civic Exl from an Accord sport 2013 I guess I like smaller cars. I see some complain about gas mpg and this is all about your right foot. the Accord could range from low 20s to well over 40 as to the Civic, high 20s to 41 42 when being careful. Love the keyless entry , blind side, the car really has great features, and has a sporty feeling. Plain and simple this is a lot of car for the money !!!!

After seeing many family members and friends over the years owning and loving their Hondas, I decided to give in and try one on myself. I am simply amazed. A compact car that is as roomy, comfortable, and quiet as a much larger, more expensive car. Steering feels great, turns quick, soaks up the bumps, sudden braking no problem, gives the driver a feeling of confidence. Acceleration could be a little better but it's acceptable from a 4 cylinder with automatic. I've gotten 37 mpg combined city-highway. Incredible value for the money.

I leased this car and I've had it for a little over a month now, and I just LOVE this car!. I got a bang for my buck!. I had a 2012 EX prior to this car and this car is eons better!. The styling is awesome!. The steering is sportier, the interior is better built and I love the push button start, LaneWatch and backup camera. I need a backup camera due to limited range of motion from surgery. I pay $80 less than I did for my 2012 but get more for my money. The car rides smoothly but don't expect it to be like my Mom's Lexus or even my Dad's Acura though. I was originally going to get a Subaru for good traction for Illinois winters but the Subaru felt dull and dated compared to my new Civic.

Gas mileage, NAVI and acceleration not as expected

UPDATE 5/25/2018 - Acceleration still a major issue. Every time I take my car to Honda for service I complain about this issue and they tell me there is nothing wrong with it. They tell me it's a new feature and I have to drive the car differently. What??? Not acceptable. Very disappointed with Honda to actually come out with an answer like this. The gas mileage is definitely not as I expected. My 2006 Civic EX that I traded in had better gas mileage with over 100,000 miles on it. I have it set with ECON all the time and I feather the gas petal to a point that I almost get in an accident for slow acceleration, and still only get 34-36 MPG at best. I have yet to get over 380 miles on a tank full. I use to get 425 plus on my 2006 Civic with the same gas tank size. Also, the NAVI system is terrible. No spoken street names for a 2014 model???, are you kidding. Plus it is not very intuitive and can't make changes as you drive. Big waste of money. The only good thing is there is no other GPS device mounted to the dash. UPDATE 5/25/2017 - Also, a very serious issue, the acceleration is horrible from the start. When you step on the accelerator from a stop there is a major hesitation which is VERY dangerous. When going out in the highway from a stop the acceleration actually stops for a period of time and doesn't move and eventually picks up after 2-3 seconds. Very dangerous!! I brought back the car to her dealership every time I service it and they tell me the same thing, that there is nothing wrong with it, and that with this new CVT transmission I have to learn to drive it differently. What?? I have brought it back to 3 different Honda dealers and they all tell me the same thing. That is not acceptable. This is very dangerous. I have noticed all over the Internet complaints about the acceleration as well. I love the car, but that is definitely a big issue.

I've always wanted a Honda civic because of the great reviews and good gad mileage. I get 35 city and 42 highway which is pretty great. I think the car overall is great, but there are some things I'm not a fan of. The Lx version only has 3 windshield wiper settings which is frustrating. Also the headrests sit too far forward, the interior seems pretty cheap, the Bluetooth is loud for those calling you, and the acceleration is kind of sluggish. My most recent problem though is the paint. I wax my car once or twice a month because I live in texas, and wash it almost every week. You'd think the paint would be in great condition. Wrong, after a year of owning the vehicle I have rock chips all over my hood. The paint is cheap and they won't cover it under any warranty. Overall a great car, but not worth the price tag

Glitchy Electrical System

I bought this car 2 years ago Pre-owned with 32k miles on it. I haven’t even driven 20k miles since purchasing the car. I remember going way back to when I purchased the car, my check tire pressure light came on frequently (it still does) in a change of temperature or altitude (always happens on the same highway!! Weird!). Because I’m paranoid, I always check the tires when this comes on. They’re always fine. I recalibrate TPMS system myself and the light always goes away. However, strangest thing happened yesterday. I was in middle of 3 hour drive and I stopped at a rest stop to use bathroom. Came back out and started car and so many lights came on all at once, out of the blue (check brakes, ABS, VSA, Hill start, power steering, TPMS, and probably another one I’m forgetting). Of course, I freaked out (I have nightmares that this happens!). Highway assistance came and said the car looked fine, looked like computer problem. Drove it rest of way (1 hour) and it was fine. The next day we took to a mechanic and he said it was likely due to extremely low battery in car. He put new battery in. I’m surprised the battery was already low considering the fact I bought the car just over 2 years ago and haven’t even driven 20k miles on it. The car was used when we purchased and mechanic said the original battery was in the car- which means the car dealership didn’t even bother to put in a new battery when I bought it.. ugh! So anyway, the car should be fine now, fingers crossed. However, all these lights keep coming on. The mechanic wasn’t a Honda dealership and in order to get these lights to go away, I have to go to a Honda dealership to have computer system reset. This is important to me because since these systems come up as in need of being checked, the car will disable the system that is labeled as need of being checked (for example ABS will not work now until light it cleared away). Too scared to drive car on highway until it gets reset. I’m very frustrated with how sensitive this car is!

Bad Wheel Bearings and Tire pressure sensors

Jennifer , 07/08/2019

Wheel bearings will wear very quickly! Within 60,000 miles, the front left wheel bearing was faulty. Replaced, and within another 25,000 it was bad again! Replaced again. Within 6 months of replacing the second time, it was faulty AGAIN! Very expensive over time, and extremely dangerous to drive on if it’s worn out. Apparently, it’s common in 2012-2015 year models. Also, the tire pressure sensors on this car are AWFUL! The wheel bearing issue causes the tires to wear extremely unevenly. Should have been a noted recall by Honda.

Transmission Died at 95k

As a taller driver, I never really liked my Civic. Besides not really being comfortable, it's terrible to drive at night, has significant blind spots, and the steering was not real precise. There was a recall in 2015 issued (that did not cover my particular vin) for the 2014 that affected the software used for eco-mode. Well, my car wasn't covered under the recall, but the same problem eventually destroyed my transmission when it seized up at 95,000 and had to be replaced, which was a $6k repair.

My brand new 2014 Honda Civic EX keeps leaking!

Jorge Molina, 09/20/2015

14 of 21 people found this review helpful

I bought this car in Nov of 2014 to replace my old 1989 BMW because this last one had some terrible leaks. I was tired of dealing with this so I decide to finally purchase a brand new vehicle and say "good bye" to problems. Well, in August of 2015 (not even a whole year after the purchase) I took my new civic to get its first oil change after about 8000 miles. When I was picking up my car, the service guys at Honda recommended me to take care of an "important" leak (leak!) that the car has, What??? yes, my brand new Honda civic, which I bought to get rid of the leaks and issues that I was having with my old BMW, was leaking transmission fluid. At this point I have taken the car to repair the same issue two times. The people at Honda told me that the issue has to do with the o-ring and the rear main seal. They even applied a dye and kept the car overnight to "make sure" that the problem was fixed. At this exact moment (when I wrote this review) I had the suspicious that the car is still leaking. I am very frustrated with this car. At this point I feel like Honda sold me a brand new lemon car and that really irritates me. My only hope is that if I confirmed that the car is a lemon car, Honda refund me or replace my car for another one. Otherwise, I would never buy or recommend Honda again in my life. By the way, and just to be fair, despite of the very annoying leak that the car has, the car works great.

Wife purchased a used 2014 Civic with 40k miles from a rental company over a year ago. The ride comfort is almost as smooth as a mid size car. It is by far the best CVT car I've driven and still has good power and passing ability while getting insane fuel economy on the highway. We've averaged 40 mpg on vacations and it gets nearly 50 mph in ideal highway driving conditions (it has real time mpg data). No reliability issues so far, which isn't surprising for a Honda. Two main complaints are the utter lack of cup holders - only two for the entire vehicle - and it's the hardest car I've had to get in and out of, a combination of it's low sitting position plus a slanting roof line. Also not much rear passenger room and no rear cup holders. It's a nice car for a single commuter but not if you often have more than 2 passengers.

Very Uncomfortable Seats!

I've only had the car one month and my back is getting worse by the day. Have tried the seat repositioning and adding support cushions to no avail. I have one more orthopedic cushion on order to try. My husband's back went out after a 30 minute ride (he's 5'-10 and I'm 5'-4" - not overweight) and my 70-lb. 12 yr old niece also complains of back pain in this car. Leased through Honda Financial Service and they do not allow any transfers of leases (i.e. leasetrader or swapalease). After researching this further, many Honda seat complaints have been posted in recent years. (Oh - the dealer said they will take it back in a trade - at a $3000 loss to me!!) Update August 2017: Made it through a 3-year lease with this car. It was 100% reliable every day. To deal with the awful seats I purchased a "Bottoms Up Posture Seat", which helped a lot, and also used a lumbar backrest support. I am now leasing a 2017 Subaru Outback and the seats are comfortable for all of us, even without the added support.

After a deer running into my other car with severe damage it was time for another car. My brother got the car back in 2014 brand new. After my brother bought a used vehicle I got his 2014 Honda Civic with around 120,000 miles. No major issues. Easy to maintain. It lets you know when to change the oil and if the tires are low on air. I have to reset when I get air in my tires and the oil changed. Recently I had to replace the battery. It's the first car that hasn't had to go to the repair shop for anything. Other cars I've owned had to be in the repair shop at least twice. All you have to do is regular maintenace and replace the tires. I heard they last at least to 300,000 miles. I love my 2014 Honda Civic. Very dependable. A friend of mine his mother owns a 1999 Honda Civic and it's still running 25 years later. My 2014 Honda Civic will more than likely last another 10+ years. I HIGHLY recommend this car if you need a dependable car. Plus it's fun to drive. I love driving long distances. I've got nothing to worry about with this car.

I purchased a 2014 Civic LX sedan with the CVT transmission in July 2014. Have owned it for about 1 month and currently have about 1000 miles on it. Love it so far! Averaging about 35 miles per gallon and getting about 400 miles to the tankful! Power is adequate for most driving conditions and the car is fun to drive. Seats are very comfortable and this car has a ton of features for the money (I paid $16,700 not including tax and license). If you're looking for a safe, reliable, economical car, this is it.

I leased my 2014 EX Sedan in late July and now have almost 400 miles on it. I had a 2012 EX Sedan before this and I think this car is way better!. The steering feels better weighted, maybe even sportier, plus this car is quiet whereas my 2012 was loud. I love the backup camera and the LaneWatch monitor because I had neck surgery last year. I also looked at the Subaru Forester but I didn't want an SUV and wanted good traction because Chicago winters can get messy, so the Civic fit the bill and it has FWD so yes, my Civic can handle the snow just like my old one did. The Honda's interior is modern whereas the Subaru looked outdated.

I feel secure and confident with my car. I'm living in the desert and we have a lot open roads that we use to speeding sometimes I drove over 110 MPH and the performance and stability of this car is insane. I can't ask for more Honda Canada did a great job with this car.

yes that's right first week i went to use the a/c and nothing but warm air came out, wish I tested it at the dealer. Was very unhappy to have not even a week old car in the shop needing a repair. Two years with it and its starting to show some wear. The paint isn't durable there's a couple rock chips on the hood. Things I don't like: everything about the CVT especially the loud whine noise. don't recommend for highway driving., excessive road noise, no volume knob, numb steering and driver side window shifts the interior door in the direction of the window going up and down.

My last car was a 2001 Honda Civic LX, 5 speed manual transmission, that I bought used. I drove it for the past 12 years and it was rock solid. Loved every minute of it. It got great gas mileage (36-40 right up to the end. When it finally died I went with a used (2014) Honda Civic LX with the 1.8 L engine and CVT transmission. Although I've only owned it for two weeks, I'm loving it! This past weekend I drove it 1100 miles of highway, and it got 47.5 MPG! Those are numbers that I'd expect of a hybrid on city streets. The ride is smooth, the acceleration is smooth, the seats are comfortable, and the technology package is great for the price. I could not be happier with my purchase, and I'm looking forward to another decade+ with this car.

What can I say it’s a Honda? I average 37mpg year round. The CVT transmission takes some getting used to but it is great. Transmission CVT fluid changes are much more important in this type transmission because way they work.I change mine every 30-50K miles. Very sporty looking car as well in burgundy color. It is a little harder to get in because of the low sitting position but well worth it because of MPG and sporty style.

These cars are among the best values on the market, a well known fact. Still one of the best cars in its category

Bought it from dealership with clean history, no accidents. Honda's are always a good bet for a low mileage used car. They have good maintenance/repair record.

Was misinformed concerning gas mileage

April, I bought a 2014 EXL honda civic. I had a list what the car must have. Gas mileage was top on the list. I live 30 miles from town, all 75 miles hi-way. I use cruse, Econ button, and and stay in the green dash light. I have yet to see 40 mpg or even close to that mileage. The car has 3000+ miles and the Dealer said the car would get better mileage with the summer gas and once the car passed 1500 miles The car is averaging 27/33.

When buying a basic model Honda Civic you should know that it doesn't have AUTO control for headlights. You must turn them on and off yourself.

Dashboard is Too Weird

From 2013-15, Honda went weird on us and drastically changed the dashboard, giving it a bump out and putting the MPH in a weird spot. Too much of a learning curve for me to make when every other car I've ever driven has had it in the same spot, including a Civic I drove for 13 years.

Super gas mileage. 40-45 hwy. 30 city. Great ride and handling. CVT drones a little but shifts seamlessly.

if you are a tall person then the civic isn't the best but will be some what comfortable. overall the car is great on mileage once you put a K&N filter in . it will improve your mileage 2-3 mpg. avg mpg for me was 39 hwy and 31 city, but that will depend on you foot and how heavy it is! comfort is good and the seats with the heat in winter month's is great. the instruments are nice with the blue background with the speed odometer nice and bold to see. ample space in trunk for your needs plus the rear seats will fold down for added space.to this day there have been no issues with the civic and always have the service done at the required time. the tires have nitrogen installed to replace the air ,which helps on cold and hot days having to worry about pressure difference! plus you never need to worry about the moisture inside the tires from the air which can rot the tires from the inside.
