The 2022 Genesis GV70 is the brand's all-new small luxury SUV. Smaller and less expensive than the similarly new GV80, the GV70 competes against such heavy hitters as the Acura RDX, BMW X3, Lexus NX, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Volvo XC60. After finally getting a chance to drive the GV70 for ourselves, we can state that Genesis is getting tantalizingly close to equaling the established German luxury brands.

While the GV70 shares some visual cues with its larger GV80 sibling, it definitely has its own distinctive style. The two SUVs have a similar-looking front grille and dual-stripe headlight clusters, but the GV70 stands out with a raked roofline and wagon-ish rear end that accentuates its length. Genesis equips the GV70 with the same engines that are in the larger GV80. The 2.5T model comes with a 300-horsepower four-cylinder and the GV70 packs a 375-horsepower V6. Both engines have strong power outputs for the class.
There's no shortage of interesting features inside the GV70. The new SUV comes with a 14.5-inch touchscreen atop the dash, and an available digital instrument display that has a cool 3D effect for its graphics. A host of advanced driver aids come standard, and other neat tech features include a fingerprint reader that can restore a driver's seat, climate and audio preferences with a simple touch on the dashboard.
Genesis has been steadily improving the quality, performance and refinement of its vehicles over the short time since the brand was established. How does the GV70 drive? The GV70's enjoyable driving experience starts with its smooth and robust powertrain. The available turbocharged V6 provides easy and accessible power from just about anywhere in its rpm range. The base four-cylinder feels a bit more high-strung but ultimately makes satisfactory power. In our testing, the GV70 with the V6 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds while the four-cylinder isn't too far behind at 6 seconds flat. The automatic transmission delivers smooth shifts when just tooling around, but it can also crank up the aggression with crisp, positive shifts when the roads get fun. The base engine and transmission lack a little refinement by comparison but isn't a bad way to go.
Around turns, the GV70 isn't as sporty as a Porsche Macan, but it responds intuitively and predictably to your inputs. Braking is predictable too, and it's easy to stop smoothly. All in all, this is a quick and smooth SUV, but not the athlete that some others are.

Comfort

How comfortable is the GV70? Comfort is a big part of what makes the GV70 a great SUV. The front seats are highly adjustable, and our test model's seats also had heating, ventilation and a massaging feature. The rear seat cushions are also pretty comfy and offer a generous amount of recline. An adaptive suspension (standard with the V6) adjusts itself based on the road conditions ahead. The ride isn't quite as plush as the larger Genesis GV80's, but it strikes a commendable balance between comfort and compliance.
The climate control has a dedicated touchscreen that's easy to use. The seat heating and cooling are nearly unmatched for their intensity, and the heated steering wheel was equally as impressive. A quiet cabin rounds out the luxury experience with dual-pane windows keeping a lot of the wind and ambient noise at bay. There was only some low-level road noise on particularly textured surfaces.

How’s the interior? The GV70 has a slightly different interior design than other recent Genesis models and is better for it. The infotainment control knob, in particular, is much easier to use than the GV80's. The dial rotates and moves and even features a touch-sensitive surface, all of which can be used to navigate the menus. On the downside, it's easy to mistake the dial for the gear selector, which is also a dial. The touchscreen is also located a bit too far away from the driver, so you might find yourself stretching to press it.
The GV70's cabin is among the more spacious-feeling in the small luxury class. The extra-wide door openings make it easy to get in and out. We love the driving position and appreciate that Genesis makes all the main controls easily accessible for the driver. And despite the GV70's rakish body, it's actually quite easy to see out of.

How’s the tech? The GV70 comes with a healthy amount of modern tech. For starters, advanced driving aids including adaptive cruise, lane keeping assist and collision prevention are all standard. Only the surround-view camera system and blind-spot monitoring are extra, and even then they're reasonably priced as part of a larger package. The upgraded 16-speaker Lexicon audio system is part of that package and well worth the money.
Also standard is the GV70's short but wide 14.5-inch center touchscreen. It includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, but it doesn't support wireless connectivity for these systems like more and more new vehicles do. How’s the storage? Rear cargo space is very generous at 28.9 cubic feet, which is right up there with the class-leading RDX and Jaguar F-Pace. The loading area is wide, allowing for easy loading of larger things. The rear seats can be folded flat from the cargo area, so there's no need to walk around to the rear doors. Genesis' smart trunk opens automatically based on your proximity.
Storage space within the cabin isn't super generous, but it's adequate. The center armrest bin is a decent size, and we love how the tandem cupholders stay out of the way of the driver controls. Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? The GV70 with the V6 engine gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg combined (19 city/24 highway) while the four-cylinder gets 24 mpg combined (22 city/28 highway). That's decent, though some competitors are slightly more efficient thanks to integration of a mild hybrid system. We ran the V6 GV70 on our 115-mile evaluation route, and it returned an average of 20.2 mpg in heavier-than-usual traffic. Despite the traffic, we have a feeling that hitting the EPA estimate will be a challenge if you don't drive with efficiency in mind. Our four-cylinder test vehicle fared a little better on that same loop, averaging 25.4 mpg in our test, which is closer to what we'd expect to see.

Is the GV70 a good value? The GV70 is definitely a value leader when it comes to features, build quality and price in the small luxury SUV segment. While the interior may not quite reach the same level of finish as a Mercedes-Benz or Audi, it certainly isn't far behind. And the areas we think that are lacking — slightly tacky-looking carbon-fiber trim and touchscreen iconography that looks too similar to a Hyundai or Kia product — are pretty minor.
Then when you bring Genesis' warranty into the equation, it leaps even further ahead. The five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranties aren't close to being matched by anyone in this segment. Roadside assistance is good for five years/unlimited miles, which is a year better than most rivals. And Genesis provides free maintenance for three years/36,000 miles.
Then when you bring Genesis' warranty into the equation, it leaps even further ahead. Genesis is making bold moves and it's paying off. Aside from the "crocodile overbite" hoodline that's hard to unsee, the GV70 is a striking car that catches more attention than most in its class. And it's not just the outside. The interior is a fresh and thoughtful design that looks and feels luxurious.
The GV70 mostly backs up its looks with a driving experience that's sporty enough to have fun on a back road. The base four-cylinder turbo engine provides adequate power, while the V6 engine is a gem and really impresses with how the transmission behaves at different ends of the comfort and performance spectrums.

The GV70 is a small luxury SUV available in two trim levels: 2.5T and 3.5T Sport. The GV70 comes with an impressive list of standard features. While we haven't yet had the opportunity to drive the 2.5T engine, on paper it seems like the better option. It offers plenty of power for most people, and the money you'd save by not choosing the 3.5T Sport can be used toward the Select package and you'd still spend a few thousand less than the 3.5T.

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
Updating review after about a year of ownership.
I ended up trading this car in for a BMW, there were just too many things about it that started to bug me.
The Good things
1. The car looks great. I’ve had more people come up to me and start talking about this car than any other car I’ve owned
2. The interior materials and design are top notch
3. The HDA2 features are great.
4. The … car has a lot of usable space. More than expected given its size.
5. The car is quiet. Impressively quiet. They really did a good job minimizing road and tire noise.
The Bad
1. The gas mileage is bad. About 21 mpg using premium gas. This is with the 21 inch tires. The smaller tires should give better gas mileage but look kind of meh.
2. The half digital/half analog dashboard is a joke. Initially I was ok with it but after I saw cars $20k cheaper in the Hyundai line up with full digital it really started to bug me. The competition also offers full digital dash at the same price point.
3. The seats on the Sport Prestige have mesh inserts and look cheap. Yes, they allow the ventilated seats to work really well but I only use that feature 3 months out of the year. More importantly, don’t even think about using the seat massage. After using it a few times, the seat got stuck in an in between state between normal and massage. I could never get them back to where the seat wasn’t uncomfortable after that.
4. Part of the reason I couldn’t get the seat back is because the dealer never responded to my concierge request to have it looked at. I don’t think this is uncommon with that service. Without dedicated dealers and loaner fleets, I don’t see how this lack of response won’t continue to be a problem. Just unacceptable given the price and what the competition offers. This car stickered for as much as a very well equipped Q5 or X3 (~ $55k).
The So So
1. I’m torn on the powertrain. The engine feels great at highway speeds. Ex. accelerating from 55-75. The engine feels a tick slow and laggy accelerating from a stop. Ex. Accelerating from 0-60 to get onto a highway. Published 60 times are around 5.6-6.0 but these are with launch control and not normal acceleration.
2. The Lexicon system is clear but weak. Weak=Having to turn it up to 60 out 70 to get a nice loud sound.
3. The overall car tech is impressive, however it fails to execute on the fundamentals. Ex. It gives you neat things like posture analysis but then fails 60% of the time to apply those settings when you start the car up.
TL:DR summary, the car is pretty good but is let down by some nagging issues and an underdeveloped dealer network. If the car was discounted relative to the competition, these would be easier to overlook. However, if you’re charging as much as a Q5 or X3 you better offer similar tech for the price (ex full digital dashboard) and dealer experience (being able to schedule an appointment to get the car serviced). Genesis doesn’t do this.

I think this car is worth a look if you’re shopping in the Q5/GLC/X3 space. I traded in a 2018 Q5 Premium Plus for it and so far it’s been superior to the Audi in most areas. My rating is 4 stars due to the dealership experience and option unavailability on the 2.5.
Pros
-The 2.5 puts out 300hp and over 300lb ft of torque. It seems noticeably faster than the Q5 I traded. (Not as fast as the X3 M40s I test drove)
- Good steering feel. The AWD is rear biased and the steering feels more communicative than the Audi
-Styling. Styling is subjective but I think the interior/exterior design is better than what the Germans are putting out
-Warranty. Genesis gives a longer bumper to bumper and powertrain warranty than the Germans. The complementary 3yr/36k maintenance is a nice add on.
-Features/Misc. The standard safety features are great and it just has a lot of “neat” tech features for the price. The highway driving assist and smart cruise are really good.
Cons
-Combined gas mileage is only in the 21-22 mpg range. I was getting 25 mpg in my Q5
-The Lexicon audio is good but not great. It has good clarity but the bass is noticeably weak.
-The dealership experience is lacking. This is expected since Genesis is colocated with Hyundai. For now I’m ok with it since my previous Audi/Lexus dealer experiences were just ok.
-The way Genesis only makes certain options only available on the 3.5 trim is annoying. There’s no good reason the full digital instrument cluster and ELSD aren’t available on the 2.5 Sport Prestige.

I love love LOVE my GV70!!! The exterior design is sleek and an eye catcher from the front or rear. It's like a Bentley...until a Bentley pulls up. The GV70 '22 is brand new and looks amazing. Pluses - the console has a 14 inch-touch screen display, the gear shift is a dial, there is massage capability in the driver seat, there's heated AND ventilated seats, the ambient interior lighting … is nice, panoramic moonroof, and there are unique Interior leather colors (i.e. red, blue, green). The red is H-O-T. The only minus I would say is the gas mileage. I keep mine on eco to save on gas. You get a lot for for an SUV at this price point. The drive is smooth. Thumbs up for 375 hp . I like that the packages are straight forward and easy to understand. There are not a ton of add ons that get confusing. I have the 3.5T Sport Standard. It feels luxurious!!!
Not a reliable Car

Purchased my GV70 in October 2021, at less than 5,000 miles, back at Genesis where over a period of 3 months over having my car they changed the transmission 2x and then the transfer case. In October 2022, the radio/modem failed and in mid December Genesis is stating "your part is likely to be another month before shipping" Genesis Consumer Affairs is clueless and useless, never mind … Genesis Conceige/valet service that is nothing more than a dream.

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
I would have given a higher rating, but my experience with Genesis North America customer service over a very well documented issue was extremely disappointing. My GV70 had an issue that set it into a sort of limp mode, seriously lacking performance, without any code or visible sign of issue, and remaining unexplained to this day. I was able to resume driving the car after turning it off … then back on again, but from that point forward there was a slight hesitation when accelerating. After unsatisfactory attempts to work with Genesis customer service, I wrote to the company's COO in detail about my issue and subsequent, substantial out of pocket expense for my new car that I believed should have been covered by warranty, but I confirmed that my letter was never read. Instead, my concerns were addressed by Genesis middle management that gave me a runaround, albeit courteous, but offered no explanation or resolution for the detail issues that I reported, and did not escalate as I requested. I gave Genesis North America ample time and every opportunity to address my concerns, but unfortunately to no avail. Based on this, and although I love the car, regrettably I have lost trust in Genesis and would never buy the Genesis brand again nor would I recommend the GV70 to anyone. I regret having bought a car and brand whose company executives do not appreciate a customer's sincere feedback that may help them to improve their brand and customer satisfaction.
