If you could replace the mechanicals you would have an outstanding minivan. It's big, and handles better than any other its size. We've had it on several long trips, and it was quite comfortable. But we've paid for it! Second transmission baulky--we'll stick it out til it goes entirely, thank you. We nursed the engine 110000 miles before the head gasket went. That was a mistake! The brakes are headed for their fifth repair. On the other hand, it never left us stranded--always struggled home. I would estimate this car cost Ford almost as much consumer loyalty as their 'suicide SUV.'

Waste of time and Money

I bought this car new. It had 3 transmissions, headgasket, a wheel bearing, check engine light problems, ABS light problems,and those are just the big ones before 60,000 miles. When I took it too the junk yard at 130,000 miles the cruise control didn't work, the inside lights stayed on and it chimed, the back wiper didn't work, the transmission was going out again, the check engine light never went off(which the dealer never had an explanation for), and it was VERY well cared for. I have never had anywhere near this many problems with any car and this will be the first and last ford I ever buy.

Problems: head gasket; door chimes (all the time); wipers work sometimes; check engine half the time; seat belts broke in back; HUGE cruise off button was easy to accidentally hit; this was the first vehicle ever that I had to look at the radio to do anything with it. Volume, on/off, presets, every button was the same size and feel. F.O.R.D: Full Of Retarded Design.

This is a totally unreliable, poorly built junk mobile and money pit. Ford built the engine out of two different metals that wear at different rates. As a result, it blows head gaskets every couple of years. They did not oficially recall it, but they had a "campaign" where they would repair it at no cost if you happened to bring it to a Ford Dealership. The first time the head gasket blue, it had my family stranded in a bad part of Los Angeles, about 600 miles from home. We had to tow it back and get a rental car to continue on. Since then, we've known its unreliable and haven't risked taking it very far.

The Money Pit

Three months after we purchased this van, the engine blew. Fortunately, Ford paid for the new engine due to a recall, but one year later the same thing happened (head gaskets blew) causing another $1500 in damage. Six months later, it appears to be happening again. For what we've paid in repairs ( plus the initial cost), we could have bought a brand new Honda Odessey or Toyota Sienna. Whenever I see a Windstar owner in a parking lot, I love to ask them how many engines THEY'VE put in. We all appear to be in the same boat. The transmission is about ready to blow, too.
