2023 Chevrolet Malibu Review
Pros
- Spacious interior with lots of front headroom
- Easy-to-use touchscreen interface
Cons
- Lackluster acceleration
- Limited outward visibility
- Dated cabin design
What's new
- Last year's top Premier trim and its larger engine have been discontinued
- All models gain standard safety features
- Part of the ninth Malibu generation introduced for 2016
Overview
The current Chevrolet Malibu generation has been around since 2016, and since then it has never quite found a solid footing against other midsize family sedans. It's also the last traditional sedan in Chevy's lineup that is dominated by SUVs and trucks. Perhaps it comes as no surprise that the Malibu is headed out to pasture after the 2023 model year, and it's not likely to be replaced.

In its final year, the 2023 Chevrolet Malibu lineup loses last year's top Premium trim and the more powerful 2.0-liter engine it included. Many of the Premier trim's features are still available in the new 2LT trim. It's not all bad news, as all Malibu models now come standard with a handful of advanced driver assist features. Otherwise, the Malibu returns with its weak base engine and dated interior.
While we credit the Malibu's spacious interior and accommodating trunk as some of its best attributes, it falls well short of the mark set by the Kia K5 and Hyundai Sonata. More importantly, there's a new Honda Accord on the way, which has the potential to claim class-leading status.
2023 Chevrolet Malibu trim level differences
The 2023 Malibu is offered in four trim levels: LS, RS, LT and 2LT. All are powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine (160 horsepower, 184 lb-ft of torque) driving the front wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission.
Which Malibu trim does Edmunds recommend?
We suggest stepping up to the Malibu's top 2LT trim since it doesn't represent a huge price increase and the additional convenience and luxury features make it more competitive against its rivals. We'd also consider adding the optional Driver Confidence packages for their safety features.Compare 2023 Chevrolet Malibu trim levels

Recalls
1 recall foundChecking if a car has a recall is simple. Just type the car's VIN number into the NHTSA website (https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls). If there's an unrepaired recall, you'll see it there.
If a recall shows up, just call your local car dealer. They'll know about the recall and will work with the car maker to fix it for free (if the recall happened within 10 years of the car being first sold).
- Recall Number:
- 22V923000
- Number of vehicles affected:

- Defect Description:
- General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles. The front impact bar, a structural portion of the vehicle frame, may not be properly welded to the front frame rail.

2021 Chevrolet Malibu Premier 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 9A)
I own a 2021 Malibu Premier and have also owned a 2019 Malibu LT. In my experience, this vehicle is very reliable if standard maintenance is performed routinely (as should any vehicle). I prefer the Premier model for the power and 9-speed auto transmission. The LT is good for economy driving. The handling is very good as well. The Premier recommends/requires using 93 octane fuel, which i … stick to and recommend using that. So gas is more expensive. The LT has the CVT transmission, which is slow to shift and does not like cold weather! Must let warm up and go easy on transmission for first few miles. The one negative I have is that the interior could feel more premium, but its good for what you pay for.

2023 Chevrolet Malibu 2LT 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
After just 18 months and 25,000 km the transmission is kaput!! We are seniors with excellent driving records so the car has not been abused in any way!! GM says they will replace the transmission but I have lost confidence in the car. Will be looking to replace pretty soon!!
Low quality

2023 Chevrolet Malibu 2LT 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
Bought a 2023 Chevy Malibu 2LT brand new. Thought it would be better quality since it is a 2LT. Had it for about 2 months before issues started. First issue was front bumper panel corners popped out. Had it in the garage a couple times. Being told there is no fix, just push it back in. Squeaky driver seat and gas peddle. Air box sounds like a goose when the louvers adjust. Had the … air box replaced. Sound came back within 2 months. I will not buy another chevy that was made prior to 2020. Seems like the quality went down hill. Of course chevy will take it in on trade at the value it is worth. Unfortunately, this leaves the customer a couple thousand dollars upside down in the deal.
Love it

Comfortable, smooth, quiet, fun to drive. I’ve taken it on several road trips and love everything about the ride, driver assist features and 2.0T power.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2023 Chevrolet Malibu, so we've included reviews for other years of the Malibu since its last redesign.
