Never buy first year production/design car
Bought this car used with 45k, it was to be my commuter car and a replacement to my older 2000 celica gts with 200k. First the goods: mpg is great, good looking car, good ride, most things are within arms reach, power is ok for little car, good cargo space. Now the bad: Yes, the world famous transmission issue with this car, car was at the dealer twice, things started to fall apart at 54k, little things, too much to list, got the car fixed and sold it at. I wish I had done my research before I bought the car. Yes, i am back driving my 2000 celica, she never give me problem in 7 years.

I wouldn't suggest this car.
Awful transmission problems, Ive already had it replaced along with the clutch and its under 70k miles. Bluetooth wont connect most of the time and parts literally fall off. Its a goodlooking car but thats about all it has going for it.

Not one of Ford's Better Ideas!
Though the SES is very sharp looking, gets pretty good MPG (though a friend's TDI Passat at twice the size gets just as good MPG) it has many flaws and I honestly wish I hadn't bought this car. The 6 speed auto trans had to be reprogrammed, I'm reading about those who had to get new trans and I'm nervous since I'm 2K miles out of warrantee. I can't enter or exit a driveway with any grade without scraping. I can't see though the back window due to the read hear rests, no center console creates right arm fatigue. The AC vents blow right on my hands creating aches. At 5'11" I sit way too low, the back seat is basically worthless and SYNC is an abomination. I'm an unhappy camper.
Ford Fiesta Transmission Problems
Well my Ford Fiesta had less than 1800 miles on it when the transmission started chattering while holding a steady traffic speed of 30 MPH after it warmed up. Now it does it bad between 30 and 55 MPH, still after it is warmed up. Its fine when its cold. Also twice after putting 2900 miles on the car, the transmission would not release when trying to stop at a stop light. It drove me through a red light, TWICE. It was as if I was driving a manual transmission car and forgot to put the clutch in. Scared me to death, but Im forced to keep driving it. Took it to Kline Motors, a Ford dealership in Winfield KS. They said they worked on it for 2 hours and charged over $172 and did nothing.
Practical & Fun Commuter
Having owned this car for over eight years, I'd say this is a very intelligently designed car. It provides a great deal for the dollars spent at and since purchase. The ride and handling are just right making it a fun car to drive. It's stable on the highway - not buffeted about by wind from passing trucks. It is quiet and the heated seats and heater/defroster work very well. It's unfortunate that Ford has decided to discontinue sales in the U.S. (again). Maybe it will return (again). Update: I've given thought to trading the Fiesta in for a 2019 model since they are selling for less now than I paid in 2010 as Ford gets out of the sedan business. I still like the car very much. No complaints. Update: It has been over nine years since I bought the Fiesta and I feel very much the same about it. Honestly, I'd like to give credit to the engineers who designed this inexpensive car so intelligently. I also give credit to the people who built and assembled the car. Some friends have suggested that I buy a new car to help out our currently economy, hurt as it is by the corona virus. That's the most compelling reason to sell the Fiesta and buy a new vehicle. Update: My Fiesta will be ten years old in December. I still drive it and it's still doing fine and looks fine as well. The exterior is in very good shape, especially considering it does not have a place in our garage so it stays outdoors all the time. And, the interior is in fine shape and cleans up so well. I made a smart purchase way back when. The Fiesta is now ten years and three months old and doing fine. Just had oil changed, new wipers installed and tires rotated. When it warms up a bit I'll clean the interior then wash and polish it. No problems. Update: The Fiesta was eleven years old this past December and everything about it is great. It made it through another northwest Ohio winter without problems of any kind. In this time of increasing auto prices, it actually gained value in the past year! I'll wait until prices fall again (as they will) before shopping for something new. The next time it's warm and sunny, I'll give it the good spring cleaning it deserves. My Fiesta will be 12 yrs. old in December. Just over 70k miles now. Still going strong and looking good. A smart choice. I hope Ford will make a small electric vehicle sometime soon. Update: I don't think anyone cares to read about the condition of a 12 year and 3 month old Fiesta. But, just for the record, it's still fine. As soon as the weather gets warm enough, I'll give it a cleaning inside and out. With the average price of a new vehicle at about $50,000 I'll keep the little Ford awhile longer. It's good, reliable transportation. I sold the Fiesta in December after 14 years of very reliable service. Bought a 2024 Ford Escape PHEV. Very nice car.
