If you purchase a 99 Lightning, be ready to upgrade to some of the features found on the 2001 Lightning and the after market goodies. i.g. Just to name a few, head and parking lights, grill insert, upper brake light, 80mm MAF, intake filter, blower pulley. Alum. driveshaft, 373 gears, traction bars, 2003 heads, Level 10 shift kit and a re-tune which is mandatory when upgrading the drive train. If you're a speed and torque freak, there's almost no limit as what you can do with a lightning as long as your money holds out. I do have one problem with the Lightning though and that is the quality of the seat and steering wheel material (cheap) Anyway, I have had my white 99 since July of 2000 and really can't complain. It has 78000 miles with original paint and it runs just as strong as ever. I had mine kicking out 16 lbs of boost, but realized the bottom end couldn't hold up to it, so I dropped it to 14 lbs. Keep a couple things in mind with this SC 5.4L. If it runs too lean, it's going throw a rod and the spark plugs could blow out because of the lack of threads in the heads. Head problem fixed in 2003 late year models. I keep mine in the garaged and take it out every now and then to car shows and just to drive it to keep the seals from drying out. It's amazing how many people at shows haven't seen a Lighting or had any idea Ford made them. On day it will be a collectors item.

Excellent performance, acceleration and handling on curves and at high speed. Not a good vehicle for gas mileage: averages about 13.5 city and about 15 on the highway. No problems with the truck except clear coat. The clear coat evidently is not compatable with Louisiana water--the water ATE it. Can't polish it back to new luster. Not good mileage on tires either-- Goodyear F1's 295/45ZR18 may last 20k with rotations every 3k and watch the air pressure.

I have had many types of trucks. I have also spent a lot of time on my trucks. I have found the most exsilirating truck I have ever seen ( under usual paments) This truck is an excellent choice for the fast sportlike truck. This truck is very fun to drive and easy to clean.

What can I say about this vehicle other than WOW. I bought my 1999 Lightning used in February of 2001. I owned a 1995 Cobra prior and wanted a truck with a Cobra like feel. That is exactly what I got. I've had zero problems with anything on the truck. The performance is outstanding, throw you back in your seat, tire screaming, fast and furious excitement. The gas mileage is not bad either. I once drove on a 300 mile trip and averaged 19 mpg. I would recommend this truck to anybody.
