4.6 Liter 8 cyl Eddie Bauer
Foggy windows every time it rains (very poor climate control). Third row seat means a sloped cargo floor. Heavy items fall out to the ground when you open the liftgate - watch your feet! No separate fog light switch - you can't use fog lights when using the auto lamp feature. Auto lamps only stay on for 20 sec after vehicle is shut off. Heated seats turn off after 10 minutes. Cheap plastics used throughout interior. Screeching noise from instrument cluster area. Ford is still scratching their head over that one.
I love this car.
This is my second Explorer and I would buy a third one. This car has been amazing with very little work needed.

Originally set out to purchase a GMC Envoy SLT 4x4, but was more impressed with the Explorer's ride quality, driver's seating position, and cargo area...have used the Explorer for numerous road, camping, and skiing trips...very good gas mileage considering the size and weight...4.0L V6 provides ample power around town, but struggles with four adults + gear on mountain grades and passing on two- lane highways...have to run the A/C on cool days (mid/upper 60's) because the manual mode warms outside air too much, even when set at 60.
Brake Downs
I bought this suv with 36000 on it. I have replaced all four wheel bearings at a cost of around $450. a piece. That started at 46000. The four wheel drive modual went out at 87000, cost 490. It just turned 90000 and guess what? The transmission went out, cost 3,550. I have driven Fords for over 35 years and this is the worst luck I have ever had and of course Ford won't help, I ask the dealer about the tranny at a local dealership and he almost laughed. Not sure but was told the parts are made in Mexico! Go figure! Oh the heated seats also quit last year. Guess I don't need a seat warmer anyway, and I forgot the lift gate shocks, I replaced all four of them.
Great SUV for the money
We like the ride and handling of the 2002 compared to the 1999 xlt we recently sold. Highway trip was great vehicle performed well and suspension is mcuh better than our 99
