Good Van
My wife and I bought this van w/ 150,000 miles on it. No major mechanical trouble, but getting nervous @ 165,000 miles. Radio presets worn out, and it's slow stopping. Great overall van, considering a newer one.The wipers will come on eratically for about 3 swipes, what's up with that? This is my first mopar van, but my mother has owned 4 voyagers and never any major problem, however have heard of others having transmission trouble.
Sick and broke
Was attracted to the design. What a shocker I was in for. Under warranty we had all the door locks worked on several times, but always a different problem. Ya. Water pump went out at 51000 shortly followed by trans at 52000. Talk to anyone, I must of been the only one that didn't know about there trans problems. Think that they are in cahoots with the service agencies. 2 batteries a starter and wacked out wipers. Never will buy another Chrysler/Dodge product again!!!
Will it make it another year?
We bought the van used at 45,000 miles. Shortly after we had it a month the air conditioner went out. Then the wipers would go on for no reason, and intermittent had a mind of its own. Then the starter went out. Way to many problems for a van with this low of mileage. It does handle well. We took it on two family trips and held all our gear very well.
Serpentine belt eater
Love this car other than the glitches with serpentine belts. Can't go through a puddle without the belt coming off. We live in Oregon... Had it to dealer, replaced pulleys, belts, still doing it. $$$ in belts = down time and dangerous if you were going down a mountain pass. You lose power everything without this belt...Wrestling with this 4000 pounder is not my favorite pastime.
Extended Warranty, Brute?
This is a great van to look at and very fun to drive. It is loaded with features and is very comfortable with a family of 4. We load it up and go on 2 week vacations. Very, very good vehicle for long vacations. Everything is great when its working. We are on our third trans, it goes through brakes (pads AND rotors) like buttah. The radio has a mind of its own (it sounds great though) ($400 bux for a recon at the dealer). The A/C has been completely redone, both windows in the back have new motors, the power mirrors have new motors, the front end has new stablizer bars, etc.
Great Design, Poor Reliability
This is a wonderful van with many thoughtful features. It is a pleasure to drive and handles well. Some cool ideas were poorly executed though: the "easy out" third row seats may roll out of the car, but they weigh a ton. Seats that stow flat into the floor would have been great. Unfortunately this car has given us nothing but problems. I regularly stall out, strange noises come from under the hood, and the A/C system has been replaced at great expense THREE TIMES! Ours doesn't have many miles on it, comparatively, but it is pretty much ready for the scrap heap. A shame the reliability is so shoddy, otherwise, a fantastic vehicle.
'96 Town and Country LXI
The Town and Country LXI is a very well built reliable minivan that has tons of room. This van is very comfortable and has that extra pick up you are looking for on the highways. The gas mileage is OK at about 18 in the city and 24 on the highway. I would highly recommend this van to anyone that wants a lot of room and style.
Chrysler Lemon
Wish Chrysler had got the quality up to the comfort & special features they included in their 1996 Town & Country Mini-van. When it is running it is an absolute joy to drive, but all the high priced repairs subtract from all the positive things I could say about the Van. Tranny replaced, each of the front windows have fallen into the door, replaced both headlamps because you couldn't see at night, AC has slow leak, it "dings" for 4 minutes without any indication as too what is wrong, now the final straw - the Powertrain computer module is out. I'm going to do a better job researching the next vehicle I purchase and Chrysler will be the last one on my list.
NEVER AGAIN
Although we have 135,000 miles on our T&C Lxi Van - it's cost us a small fortune to get there. The comfort, ride, and space is great. It's the reliabilty that is lacking! Our van has the special (we paid extra!) paint - which started to peel while under warranty. Chrysler did repaint the top of the van - but, it's been peeling elsewhere ever since (out of warranty). The headlights are so clouded we can barely see at night to drive and Chrysler's response to this problem - is oh..well, it's out of warranty, and you can replace the headlights - they only cost about $275 each! This is our last Chrysler product!!
96 T&C Lemon
I was one of those idealist that hoped that Chrysler had resolved their design and reliability problems (remember the K car). This vehicle was engineered to fail at 60,000 miles. Beyond the repeated brake pad replacement, we encountered, water pumps, O2 sensors, valve gasket leaks. Eventually, we expereinced what others had experienced as early as 30,000 miles; our transmission failed. You can use any search engine to find an unbelievable amount of transmission failures (enough that a recall should have occurred). However, If you call Chrysler's Customer Service headquarters they plead ignorance. They failed in every point of customer service.
