In Praise of Old Friends

What a kick it is to read these reviews of this truck, which I've owned since 1999. Driven under every possible condition imaginable -- long distance, short hauls, towing trailers, through deserts, over mountains, in blizzards, on- and off- road, it's been through several girl friends, two wives and three kids and 258,130 miles. Sure, it's needed repairs, just like me, including all those listed by "Disgruntled Owner", but there it is, still ready to take me wherever I want to go, without a complaint, like it has for over a decade. It's like an old hat, so comfortable you forget you're wearing it. It's my home, my refuge, wherever I go. Every inch evokes memories. Some of me will die with it

Great truck! Simply put, if you can find one that's been looked after, don't hesitate. Sure they have some common issues, but what doesn't? Overall it feels safe to drive, comfortable as all heck and the power and capablitities to pull most anything. I am looking to buy another to keep as a spare before they are all gone!

GREAT SUV

We had this truck for 12 years. I loved it so much. I finally decided to start doing performance upgrades on when I got back from Iraq in January with dual exhaust (Flowmasters) and a K&N Cold Air Intake. Unbeleivable and noticeable changes were felt. Gas milage is what is expected but sure as hell doesn't seem as bad as what is on paper. The interior is a little boring but add-on possibilities are endless. The seats are large and comfortable. Very reliable. Was rear ended 3 times in 12 years, the most recent (2 weeks ago) totalled it, thanks to F250 flying into me going 50 mph while we were stopped for traffic with my newly adopted 7 month old daughter in the back. We were all ok though.

Had to replace engine around 85,000 miles, then around 130,000 miles had to replace head and vortec gaskets. Also had to replace radiator, shop busted old one when they replaced the gaskets. Still on original tires. Seats are electrical and fully adjustable, power windows, rear hatch style doors w/washer n blade, cruse control low mileage on mine due to the fact I drive a 18 wheeler. Started using Lucas ethanol treatment. Mileage has really gone up. Now averaging between 16 and 17 MPG. Rated around 10 MPG for the type of driving I do in it. Now using Lucas oil treatment and the engine is running a lot better. At 278000 miles trans went out. Very expencive to repaire.Having a lot of electrical issues with windows and door locks Don't know why it says 2 door. It is a 4 door.

I bought this truck because it is simply the best design chevy ever came out with along with the infamous 5.7 power house. I think this truck is more reliable then my past too brand new trucks, no problems, and it rides so good. I have room for family despite it is a two door but a little elbow grease and you will get in the back. Anyone thinking of purchasing one of these you will be very pleased i think, and I just hit 182,000 miles this morning and its still trucking.

I am a 56 youthful year old male, living in New Jersey and who regularly travels to North Carolina with the comfort and reliability of my 1997 Tahoe. Also, I own a 1986 & 1987 Mercedes Benz 560 SEL, but when I leave to go to work or travel, it's my 1997 Tahoe that receives the assignment. Did I mention that I stand @ 6 1/2 feet tall and enjoy full comfort of leg and height room. Power is good and fuel economy presents no discouragement for a daily driver. Clean and sleek body lines on my midnight blue Tahoe, demands road and curb appeal and evening relooks upon entering my home at days end. If you own one, my comments are understandable, if you do not, it's an experience at your lost. BYE BYE !

Best SUV on the Market in 1997

I have had a good experience with my Tahoe, I have put in about $2500 in general maintenance about 1600 was labor. I put on a new water pump, alternator, brakes and cleaned the fuel injector, as well as other general maintenance. For 116,500 miles you figure that replacements parts will be needed. Very dependable. Will get new shocks soon, as I am starting to bounce. The platform is old but my 97 rides and handles better than my dads 01 Expedition Eddie Bauer. It is also quieter and the seats are more comfy. I gave it a 4 for fuel economy other than that it's a great vehicle.

A true "LEMON"

I've always been a Chevy person. I owned their full size & compact Blazers, 1500 pickup & two extended cab trucks before throwing my money away on the Tahoe-Lemon. To test drive the Tahoe is to 'want' the Tahoe... roomy interior, smooth ride, just the right size. Unfortunately, to own the Tahoe is to 'be broke'. Poor mpg (less than sticker indicates) & Constant Repair! I have replaced the tranny, starter, alt, water & fuel pumps, windshield wiper moter (recall), front interior door handles, passenger seat belt assembly clasp/lock, idler arm, brakes & rotors several times, & plug sets too many times to count. Steering scensors fail on/off as do electronics, interior plastics are now breaking.

After reading the other reviews, my Tahoe looks like a Toyota. I was woried about GM quality but had to have a V8 SUV for towing which meant Expedition or Tahoe. At 100k mile, the only real problem was the front suspension (Pitman and A arms had to be replaced to keep the truck in alignment). New altenator, battery, a few sensors, cap and rotor have also been replaced. This SUV still has the most confortable seats of any SUV, tows exceptionally, is just the right size, and has classic SUV styling. Didn't think I would get used to the mushy brakes, but they do stop ok if you remember what you're driving. MPG has been about 16.5 in city/highway mix.

Love this car for its great lines, 350, availability of aftermarket parts and its ability to move in the snow. Unfortunately, we're on our 4th transmission; this one a warranty replacement for the new one we put in when the second one went south. The next time it eats a set of rotors I'm going to spend some real money and buy a pair that should last. There's also a sensor in the power steering that goes sour routinely and makes for some exciting wheel play on snow and ice and is in fact, a serious liability. Anyway, glad to have mine and no intention of letting it go; it's one of tomorrow's classics!

I love this vehicle for taking trips. It rides better than my car due to the large wheel base. The Tahoe gets about 13 in town and 18 on highway. The only problem is that I dont trust it for any trips any more. The tranny dropped at 80K. I am now at 103K and I have spent about 5,000.00 in repairs so far. I love the car other than the repairs. A 30,000.00 vehicle should not have to cost an additional 5,000.00 in repairs

We started looking for an SUV last year and when we saw this one, we had to have it. The Tahoe drives better than any other SUV in it's class. It is very solid on the road and gives great confidence. This much I love. I HATE the reliability. Immediately after we bought it, we had to have several fuel injectors replaced at about $500.00. Some time later, the fuel pump failed. We also replaced the alternator. All this in about a years ownership. Oh yeah, and the drivers door handle broke off. We also find that the lack of rear air conditioning is a major down side. So, like I say, we love to drive it, but it is a huge money pit.

After replacing the engine manifold, transmission, starter, water pump, master cylinder, radiator all between 70-80,000 miles, my tahoe runs ok. Brakes are poor as have replaced 2 sets of rotors but am still on the original pads. The rear door leaks and needs a new gasket. This car is only used by my wife for daily trips to take the kids to school and other events. Dealings with GM customer service are like having a root canal. They are very good at the denial game. My mechanic who is now my best friend says that my problems are not uncommon with regards to the transmission, manifold and brakes. Not a car I recommend purchasing.

The best truck I've ever owned. Its very reliable, great for road trips, towing, getting around in the snow etc. I bought it with 130k and now it has 170k. I had to replace the intake manifold gasket and have the transmission rebuilt but, other than that its been small cheap stuff. One of the best things about owning one of these is parts are plentiful and cheap. It doesn't get great gas mileage (12-15) but, its a V8 Truck. I would rather put extra money in the tank than have $1k repair bills on a vehicle that only a dealer can work on.

Being 6'8" its the only vehicle I can drive 15 hrs and still be able to walk afterwards. Added K&N intake and comp cams components to engine great edition. Gets close to 18 around town and 20 on freeway. Planning on replacing brakes with aftermarket disks. Found Optima battery to solve charging problem and genuine AC Delco alternator, haven't had a problem since. Keep fuel above quarter tank and fuel pump lasts a long time. Recently was in a horrible wreck where vehicle was totalled, no passengers were injured, vehicle did everything it was supposed to. Love it so much am going to buy it back and do a frame up rebuild. Recommend one to anyone looking for used SUV just keep up on maintence

Where do I start? I got mine 11-24-1998 and if I wasn't a very mechanical guy I would've gone mad by now. It would be a great vehicle if it wasn't breaking all the time. The list of things that broke are: Fuel-pump at 40K, Intake manifold gaskets 2X, Transmission at 80K, Front rotors continually warp- inadequately-braked vehicle, Water pump, Radiator, Interior plastic parts galore-Sun visor vanity mirrors R/L, Right side electric mirror, Alternator 3X, Rear cargo door strap, Rear speaker, Paint on hood and top shot, Dog tracking problem, Grill plastic parts are all breaking, Wiper pulse board. I am a bit remiss to not remember everything. If I ever sell it, it will have everything corrected.

I couldn't be more THRILLED that this is my first vehicle! I was going to trade it for a small car, until I got it on the road. Had to fix the rear brake lines to get it road worthy. currently need to fix one stabilizer bar, front brakes could go any day, part of the front drivers side frame is rotted pretty bad, the vehicle clicks funny when reversing and there's a leak in the gas tank near the top. She had about 427k when I got her. after putting on almost 1000k a month since Oct, I'm STILL in love. I will be sad when she has nothing left to give, hopefully that won't be for a long time yet

Unless they make a new model or Hummer makes a 2 door, the value will go up on the body style. Its value is also in the power to weight ratio. It can pull more than I think it should. The spline on the drive shaft can be damaged. If you sell yours, always remember, if the dealers say it's hot, then it is. Anything that ever broke was for a reason directly linked to the condition it was exposed to. Plastic tabs for example on the interior, were not designed for endurance, but for ease of assembly. Put Baer disk brakes on all four, and replace injectors. Cost of repair much less than interest on new loan alone, exceptional recreational second vehicle.

We bought it at 18 months old. It was basically new. Pretty good service until 75000 miles then it turned to a POS (piece os Sh..) The intake manifold gaskets started leaking for no reason. $800 at the GM dealer. Same thing happened to my dad's 96 Suburban and my best friends 99 Suburban. 80,000 miles the condenser coil went out. They had to completely disassemble the dash.$667. Never rode the same after that. Then the ERG valve. By the time they got through with us that cost another $500. Like I said...POS

Purchased Tahoe used from Russ Darrow (don't buy from there) had to replace the transmission within a year of purchase. We tried to find out if it was under warranty and got the run around from Chevrolet. Within two weeks it had electrial problems. 8 months of purchase the transmission started slipping and the rear end made a clunking noise. The window adjuster and lock mechanism fell into the door and we can not use those buttons on the passenger side. I do not like the anti- lock brakes that were designed for this vehicle. When I come to an abrupt stop the whole vehicle shakes and feels out of control.

I am an ASE master tech. All my vehicles are maintained religiously. I purchased my Tahoe brand new. It is a love/hate relationship. At 31,000 the car quit on the road due to battery post failure. It spewed acid all over the R/F brake line. At 43,000 miles, the transmission failed. It was 8 mos out of warranty. Chevrolet's response was I should have purchased an entended warranty. Now at 52,000 the intake manifold leaks. I have replaced the rear pinion seal, wiper motor, water pump, front brake rotors, the idler arm, and last week the transmission valve body again.

This truck has reliability problems of certain components. Steering sensors have failed twice, fuel pump once $900, transmission $3500. This truck has 75000 miles on it and never pulled a trailer, nor been used off road. Fuel pump and transmission will fail without warning and leave you on the side of the road. Steering sensors cause the truck to turn off the road or into the oncoming lane, but atleast you can get back to town to the shop. I paid 1997 prices and received 1977 reliability. If buying one be sure to get an extended warranty and a cell phone to call tow truck when it breaks down on the road.

I purchased my Tahoe in '02 w/74k. She was a 1 owner with a fresh tranny! This SUV is the bomb! Done the average repairs: fuel pump, pittman arm, brakes and rotors. Rides great @75mph. Just remember it is a heavy SUV! You can not drive it like a car and expect the same results. (brakes, fuel economy, maintenance) My tank- Tahoe is holding its own at 167,000 miles with no signs of engine problems. If you are going to buy used, forget Ford and Dodge. Go Chevy

Bought used with 51K on her. Ran great up to 80K. Timing chain broke, dinged the valves and $4,000 later had it back for a week before the timing chain broke again (dealer installed incorrectly) Now at 120,000 mile have had to replaced brakes and rotors three times, replaced alternator twice, transmission is going and the fuel regulator is about to go as well. replaced wiper motor as well. Comfortable/powerful ride, but will cost ~$10K to get another 100,000 miles out of it. Ready to move on to something else.

Reliability has been low in history of this vehicle. Fuel pump at 33K, water hose quick connect corroded and broken at 40K, tranny died at 55K, Driver door handle breaking at 60K, Alternator @65K, windshield wiper circuit board @70K. Had Delco battery leak acid that destroyed battery cables. Parts counter at Chevy dealer recommended I get another brand because he had a room full of leaking batteries and Delco did nothing to redesign to prevent problem. With all this no wonder the term of endearment for this vehicle starts with "piece of". Now that everything has been replaced it runs great and I intend to keep for some time as tow vehicle for boat.

I originally leased this truck for three years and could not part with it... so I bought it. Under warranty, GM replaced 2 a/c blower fans, fixed the power steering, replaced the break rotors, replaced the rear pinion seal, and fixed a few rattles. After the warranty was out, I fixed a coolant leak, did the brakes again, and replaced a valve in the transmission. I figure I put about 1k/year into the truck for the last 3 yrs and now have 83k miles. The other day I noticed leaks from the transfer case and rear pinion seal again.

I should have known truck was trouble when I drove it off the lot & the alt. went. Since then I have replaced brakes & rotors, rebuilt trans, replaced water pump, battery, starter, windshield wipers just stop working, trans cooler, built into the radiator, sprung leak causing all sorts of probs, the head gasket leaking all this under 88k! Believe what you read in the reviews. It's not reliable, brakes are awful, electrical system is bad & the trans is trouble

At 98,000 I put in another tranny (this one under warranty)! Five hundred miles later this tranny went bad too. Holy smokes!! GM still tells me there is nothing wrong with their transmissions. Bought my 1997 Tahoe LT 20 years ago because it was the last year a new 4WD 2-door SUV model was available across all manufacturers. It has been a wonderful family truck - pulled boats and trailers with quads up mountains and across sand dunes, yet always got an appreciative look at events when I pulled in with that classy shiny black big guy. Never had one maintenance issue other than normal maintenance at Wesloh Chevrolet, Carlsbad, CA. Would have kept it forever if I hadn't totaled it in a recent accident. I always felt safe in my Tahoe and it came through in the end as I walked away uninjured. Wish Chevy would bring back the 2-DR model!

This is one of the greatest vehicles I have ever owned. Mine, though it has 150K miles, was extremely well cared for. Safe, reliable, fun to drive, easy to park(tight turning radius)and there really is no substitute for a Chevy 350 V8!! Mileage is better than I expected; 16+mpg around town. (has aftermarket air filter) I've owned 3 Suburbans and never ot more than about 12mpg with them. Of course that was in my younger, heavy foot days! (and cheap gas)Its a classy looking truck and somewhat rare to find in the 2door body style. I agree with another reviewer here.. ..If you can find one of these in good condition, BUY IT! They don't make them like this anymore. A true classic!

The Hoe

I bought the hoe and ever since I've loved it. Awesome horsepower with a few upgrades, "headers, K and N air filter, performance exhaust." With a fuel system flush and tranny flush I have gotten better fuel economy but for the ponies its pushing I'm ok with it. It's awesome for mudding and pull offs. But if working the overdrive transmission it needs a BG tranny flush and the conditioner for protection. I've had to do regular maintenance but what vehicle doesn't need it. If your looking for fun go with General Motors.

Great Truck

The truck has always been good to me and has never given me any problems. Actually you can get used to the brakes and it's not totally unsafe. Quesiton if you really need the room. I bought it thinking that I will use it, but it mostly sat in my garage as a second vehicle. So, if you really are going to use it's towing and interior size, it would be worth it.

I've had a great experience with my 97 Tahoe. We're selling to make room for a Volvo wagon now that we have a baby, but if I could, I would have held onto this truck for another 20 years. Gas mileage is not the best, but reliable and safe.

I just traded my faithful '97 Tahoe in on a Honda Accord. No longer need the Tahoe's room or towing ability, and gas is getting expensive. After 92k miles, it ran like brand new, used zero oil, and was as tight and rattle-free as the day I bought it. I'd give it a 10 for reliability, except I had to replace the water pump, alternator, front rotors, & rebuild the master cylinder. Otherwise it was trouble-free and only needed tires, a battery, & gas (15 mpg avg). It was an excellent, comfy, roomy, nice-driving rig, and I know there'll be times I'll miss it. I'd buy it again if I had the need.

I just purchased my used Tahoe in March of this year.I have to say I'm not disappointed.About a month after I purchased it I drove from New York to Florida and back without a problem. It took some getting used to but once you get comfortable with its size its smooth sailing from there. She drives smoothly on the highway and equally well on local roads.I was also surprised at the fuel economy.I was expecting to have to stop for gas at least 6 or 7 times and wound up only stopping 3 times. With gas prices these days that was a definite bonus. It's very spacious with lots of cargo room.I was able to fit the contents of a 1BR apt in it.I have no complaints.

Rectently bought my '97 Tahoe Lt 4 door 4wd with 122,000 miles on it. This is the best vechile I've ever owned hands down. Very comfortable, a nice powerful Vortec 5700 motor suits it well. I've got a nice high ride, nice comfort inside and plenty of room for the kids. I live in the Chicago area so the weather here can get rough. But with the push button 4wd were ready. This truck is true Chevy. Love it. Got a great deal on it too. Under $6000.

This has been a great truck. I drive it off road about 4 weeks a year and in the snow during winter in Colorado. It handles either great as well as dry pavement. It could get better mileage but hey, it's a full sized SUV what do you expect?
