Much like art or high fashion, you're either going to "get" the 2024 BMW XM or you won't. The clever engineering that underpins the XM is the vehicle's saving grace, as the styling, performance and luxury elements defining the rest of this M model are simply not enough to justify the experience on their own.Read full review

2024 BMW XM Review
Pros
- Fantastic balance of modern design and performance abilities
- Future-forward interior styling
- Everything-to-everyone ethos
Cons
- Massive three-ton curb weight
- Overly stiff ride for a luxury SUV
- Outrageous MSRP = questionable value
What's new
- New more powerful XM Label Red model debuts
- Part of the first XM generation introduced for 2023
Overview

Last year, BMW debuted perhaps its most polarizing vehicle to date: the XM. This big, blocky SUV is larger than the X5 but smaller than the X7 in BMW's lineup, and it's the only vehicle to be offered exclusively as a high-performance M division version. For its sophomore year, we get a new and more powerful XM Label Red model with a stunning 738-horsepower V8. Whether you love or hate it, the XM is an impressive engineering feat, but we suggest you check out our Expert Rating to see where it may come up short.

Edmunds spotlight: Plug-in hybrid performance vs. efficiency
The XM isn't your typical plug-in hybrid. Rather than focus on ultimate fuel efficiency, this powertrain devotes itself to performance. With between 644 horsepower and 738 hp, we can't imagine anyone wanting more. The XM can travel about 30 miles on electricity alone, which could conceivably save you a ton of money in the daily commute. Once the battery is depleted, the XM is only estimated to return 14 mpg in combined city/highway miles, which is even lower than some non-hybrid rivals.
Competitors to consider
BMW's usual Audi and Mercedes foes line up against the XM, as well as a few you may not expect. From Audi, we'd consider the RS Q8 and SQ7, while the AMG GLE 63 S represents Mercedes-Benz. None of them is as raucous as the XM, but they're also more comfortable and significantly lighter. We'd also cross-shop it with any of the Porsche Cayenne models, BMW's own Alpina XB7 and the Cadillac Escalade V. If you're looking to go full electric, try the BMW iX or Mercedes EQE SUV.

We drove the 2024 BMW XM on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
8/10
How does the XM drive? Sticking an M badge on a BMW gives the vehicle a mountain of expectations to overcome. To some extent, the XM scales that mountain thanks in no large part to some impressive engineering. The XM manages to overcome its surprising three-ton curb weight by sprinting to 60 mph in 4 seconds flat and dashing through the quarter mile in 12.1 seconds at over 114 mph. To go faster still, opt for the 738-horsepower Label Red version of the XM (644 hp is standard). That hustled to 60 in just 3.9 seconds and blitzed the quarter mile in 11.7 seconds at 121 mph.
But those numbers, as well as the 0.98 g we recorded on our skidpad and the 104-foot stopping distance from 60 mph, aren't much different from what you can achieve in a BMW X5 M. The XM's massive weight represents its biggest and most disappointing drawback.
As a plug-in hybrid, the XM can at times provide smooth application of both its electrical and internal combustion power. We found the transitions between the two systems to be smoothest once up to speed but a bit too unrefined at lower speeds, especially when pulling away from a stop. Even with all of its impressive engineering, the XM seems to have narrow operating windows in which everything feels pretty good.

Comfort
6.5/10
How comfortable is the XM? The sporting intentions of the XM conspire to nearly do in any attempt at being a luxury SUV. The steel springs used by BMW M performance engineers are so stiff as to absolutely ruin ride quality on anything other than a perfectly smooth surface. Things improve quite a bit at highway speeds, but the XM feels compromised because its massive weight requires a hard-riding suspension to keep body motions in check. Interior noise levels are also borderline unacceptable for a luxury SUV, with near constant tire roar and high levels of ambient road noise.
The front seats go a long way toward taking the edge off the XM's rigid ride. While they offer a wide range of adjustability and plush padding, they don't look or feel particularly special. Despite its length, the XM is only a two-row SUV. The rear seats sure look the part of a luxury SUV but lack any adjustability or meaningful support. Thankfully, the XM's climate control system has absolute control over the interior temperature, and the front seats offer massage, heating and ventilation functions. Massaging and ventilation features are conspicuously absent for the rear seats given the XM's luxury SUV aspirations.

Interior
8/10

Another similarity to the X7 is the ease of getting in and out. The XM's doors open wide and the seats offer no impediment to access. The rear seats are set very far back, so there's plenty of room to almost walk into the XM before turning around and dropping into the steeply raked seat. The driving position is something else the XM shares with the X7. It's more upright and elevated than you might expect, but the XM manages to look and feel smaller than it is once you're on the move. Our only gripe regarding outward visibility are the exterior mirrors, which are too small for such a large SUV.

Technology
9/10
How’s the tech? The XM showcases some of the latest BMW innovations, and they're pretty impressive. BMW's suite of advanced driver aids can be hit-or-miss in how they perform, but they're a hit here. BMW's optional Highway Assistant even allows for some hands-free operation at low speeds when conditions permit. The infotainment system takes a while to learn, but overall we're impressed with the operation of BMW's newest iDrive system. BMW's voice-activated virtual assistant is also a cut above most voice control systems in how it responds and in its ability to easily change things like the climate control settings.
BMW pushes the envelope even more with its Android smartphone integration. Android users can quick-pair their phones to the car, and navigation directions show up as turn-by-turn directions in the driver's gauge cluster. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are wireless in the XM, and the SUV features both wireless and USB-C charging. Our test model also had the optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system. We found it pretty impressive and capable of drowning out most, if not all, of the XM's road and tire noise.

Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? Even given the XM's length and the SUV's only two rows of seating, the cargo capacity is relatively small. At 18.6 cubic feet the XM offers less cargo space than a Volkswagen Golf GTI (19.9 cubic feet), BMW X5 M (33.9 cubic feet) and the Lamborghini Urus (21.8 cubic feet). Further hampering the XM is a high load floor. It makes loading larger items, like a modern stroller, harder than it should be. Interior storage for front passengers is largely limited to the center console. The wireless charging pad and cupholders can be concealed under a retractable door, and the XM's door bins are sizable.
The plus side of the XM's relatively flat rear seats is how much easier that makes hooking up a child's seat. The generous legroom and wide door openings make it easy to load even the largest car seat, and anchor points are easy to access.

Fuel Economy
7/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA says the XM gets 14 mpg combined and offers up to 30 miles on battery power alone. We think those numbers are accurate since during our time with the XM, we got upward of 22 mpg with extended highway driving and we achieved 34.3 miles of electric-only range on our evaluation route. In mixed driving, we saw around 16 mpg thanks to the hybrid system's constant assist. The XM Label Red we tested went 32 miles on all-electric power and got 22 mpg combined after the battery went flat.
Value
7/10
Is the XM a good value? Buyers looking to make a statement without leaving the comfort of a well-established brand like BMW are unlikely to complain about the overly stiff ride or some of the features the XM is lacking. But if you're cross-shopping the XM against a Mercedes-Benz GLS, a BMW X5 M or X6 M, the XM's value is dubious. It costs tens of thousands of dollars more and doesn't really provide much in return.
Warranties for the XM are fairly standard. BMW offers four years/50,000 miles of both bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverage and extended roadside assistance for four years/unlimited mileage. Free scheduled maintenance is offered for three years/36,000 miles.

Wildcard
8/10
It's tough to know how to judge the XM. On one hand, because of its M brand pedigree, you have to judge it as a super sport SUV. In that respect it falls a little short of the mark, failing to even meet the performance of its X5 M stablemate. On the other hand are the XM's luxury aspirations. But those are scuppered by the XM's almost punishing ride quality and many shared interior parts from less special BMWs. But there's no denying the XM's massive presence, impressive chassis engineering and top-shelf infotainment system. The XM certainly has its moments ... but they can be fleeting.
2024 BMW XM trim level differences
The 2024 BMW XM is available in the base XM or the new XM Label Red trim. Both are powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine paired with a plug-in hybrid system and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base XM (644 horsepower, 590 lb-ft of torque) has a 25.7-kWh battery and is estimated to return up to 31 miles in electric-only driving. The XM Label gets more power (738 hp, 738 lb-ft) and electric range should be comparable. All-wheel drive is standard for all XMs as is 240-volt charging capability at up to 7.4 kilowatts.
Which XM trim does Edmunds recommend?
The BMW XM is a bold car, so you might as well go all-in and spring for the new XM Label Red model. You get even more power and an even more extroverted personality.
