Incredibly expensive to maintain the V8 Bi-Turbo
Constantly requiring expensive maintenance. Bought with 60K miles in 2015. Have spend $10,000 -- and this it at least 1/3 less than what the dealer would charge. EVERYTHING requires massive labor and parts are amazingly expensive. My 6th BMW, but my first V8 Bi-Turbo.

Fun to drive but have software issues
I took delivery of my X5 4.4L V8 in January 2012. The performance and body design of this vehicle are without a doubt awesome. It's interior layout and idrive system are equally impressive. Nonetheless, I am disappointed with the rear entertainment system. My DVD player will activate when initially placing a DVD in the player (when the vehicle is on), However it will not resume play using the DVD play button. Additionally, the DVD player volume control button does not work. I was informed by one of the local BMW service departments that the problem is a software issue and that BMW is seeking a solution.

Beautiful fun and strong but o longevity
I bought this 2012 xdrive50i used with less than 100 miles on it. Less than a year later I had issues with the drive train to be specific the front differential and the transfer case, fixed but continues to return. Now that's just the beginning, it started burning oil literally a quart a week. I took it to bmw in fayetteville NC for the oil consumption test and it failed miserably. They kept it a week to perform this test to tell me it needs to be repaired and updated with new parts that bmw knows to be design issues. Long story short the replaced engine that's already been changed clearly didnt fix the class action suite that the agreed to fix so now it's over 8000 dollars for the dealer to fix it out of pocket. So now I'm stuck with a high end SUV that smokes if it sits too long , burns oil and possibly the fix could still return fro. What I've been told by an imports shop who would do it cheaper but advised until they fix the problem like they said they would it may still come back.

Transmission blew at 80K miles
While it's sturdy and fun to drive, the transmission blew apart at 80K miles! That's beyond ridiculous. Cost $12K to fix :( I cannot recommend a car that had a catastrophic failure at those low miles. My Lexus and Infiniti are much more reliable. I will NEVER own a German made vehicle again. Who cares how it drives if it falls apart????!!!!!

Powerful Lemon!
I've owned five BMW's since my first (a 1969 BMW 2002). Have loved them all -- until this one. For the first time, "treated" myself to the high-end engine: the 5.0 liter bi-turbo. Since then, I've spent over $20,000 on repairs, and still have three oil leaks that fortunately don't present a safety hazard or affect performance, because they would cost another $15,000 to repair. I've put 150,000 miles on all my previous models, with minimal non-maintenance repairs. This car, in addition to all the repairs, has suffered at least three recalls, and numerous lawsuits settled by BMW. The major settlement, of a lawsuit over engine problems, entitled me to nothing more than two oil changes (the pro-rata discount based on mileage for complete engine replacement was an insult, since it covers less than 20% of the cost of the repair). Have had several other problems (electronics and turbo issues) requiring repair also. They are apparently adopting Range Rover's strategy: if your friends see you driving one of these cars, they know you have money to burn. I will never buy another BMW.
