Though it doesn't stand out in any one category, the 2024 BMW X3 is a capable all-rounder. It's comfortable and enjoyable to drive. The cabin isn't as pretty as those of its contemporaries, but overall the X3 is a solid pick for a small luxury SUV.Read full review

- Wide variety of standard and optional features for personalization

Overview

The BMW X3 is a small luxury SUV positioned between the X1 and X5 in the Bavarian automaker's lineup. It offers seating for five and strikes a careful balance of sportiness, comfort and utility. If you like the interior design and tech features of your 3 Series sedan but need more space for road trips, chances are you'll like the X3. BMW updated the X3 in 2022, and the SUV soldiers on into 2024 mostly unchanged.

Edmunds spotlight: Engines and mpg
Two engines are available for the X3: a turbocharged four-cylinder with 248 horsepower and a turbocharged inline-six with 382 horsepower. The more powerful engine available in the X3 M40i is tempting for its addictive acceleration, but the base turbo-four should provide more than adequate thrust for most. In our testing, an all-wheel-drive X3 xDrive30i had a high 6-second showing in the sprint to 60 mph, which is respectable for an SUV weighing more than 4,000 pounds. Additionally, the four-cylinder X3 recorded better fuel economy numbers than its EPA-estimated rating of 24 mpg combined in our real-world testing.
Competitors to consider
The X3 competes with other small luxury SUVs, including the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, Genesis GV70 and Acura RDX. You might also consider similarly sized fastback SUVs, including the mechanically similar BMW X4, which trades rear cargo space for a sleeker roofline. Find out how the X3 stacks up to its key competitors by reading our Expert Rating below.
What’s it like to live with?
When BMW redesigned the X3 in 2022, we bought one for our long-term test fleet to find out how the Bavarian brand's best-selling model holds up after one year. Though the popular SUV has changed slightly over the years, our impressions still apply to the current 2024 model. See how our editors liked living with our X3 xDrive30i.

Good
7.8
out of 10
We drove the 2024 BMW X3 on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7.5/10
How does the X3 drive? We tested the X3 xDrive30i. Around town, the eight-speed transmission smartly keeps the four-cylinder engine right in the heart of its power delivery. The high 6-second 0-60 mph result we recorded should be quick enough for most people. The brakes are strong for panic stops and easy to control in typical driving.
Around turns, the X3 provides composed and enjoyable handling that's often associated with BMW. Alas, the steering is typical of a modern BMW too. It's too easy to turn the wheel in the Comfort setting, making it a little imprecise. The Sport mode provides additional heft and quickness, but there's still not a whole lot of feel coming through the wheel.
All-wheel drive and hill descent control come standard. Approach and departure angles are more generous than the previous generation, and ground clearance is 8 inches. Don't expect to tackle a difficult trail, but the X3 should be fine on an unpaved road on the way to the campground.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the X3? The front seats deliver the comfort and support needed for long stints at the wheel. The wide range of adjustments ensures a good fit for almost everyone. On bumpy roads, our test X3 had a fairly busy ride quality, which we partially attribute to it being outfitted with the optional Dynamic Handling package. The solid level of control means you feel impacts, but they don't reverberate through the cabin or bounce your head around.
At idle, it's so silent that you'll want to check the tachometer to see if the engine is running. There's a little bit of wind noise from the driver's side window at freeway speeds. Engine noise is pronounced under moderate to hard acceleration, but it's not unpleasant.

Interior
8/10

A tall roof means large windows all around, so there's a good view outside no matter where you look. Cleverly, the rear headrests are short so they don't cut into your view through the rearview mirror. The large side mirrors and optional blind-spot warning make lane changes safe and easy.

Technology
7.5/10
How’s the tech? The combination of touchscreen and dial controls makes exploring infotainment menus a breeze. The nav system is easy to use and the graphics are tack-sharp, although voice commands offer limited usefulness. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is included.
Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? Generous cargo space and plentiful interior storage options make the X3 a versatile SUV. There's a healthy 28.7 cubic feet behind the second row, which can easily be lowered from release handles in the rear, revealing 62.7 cubic feet of space. The door pockets are large and numerous, and we like the small compartment to the left of the steering wheel.
Car seat attachments are easy to access, and there's plenty of space for large child seats. The X3 can tow up to 4,400 pounds when it's equipped with the optional 2-inch receiver that includes seven- and four-pin connectors. We laud the capacity, which is among the best for a small luxury SUV.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA rates the X3 xDrive30i at 24 mpg in combined city/highway driving, which is an average number for a luxury SUV with a base engine. Still, our X3 beat that rating both on our standardized 115-mile evaluation route (27.7 mpg) and throughout its two-week test period (26.2 mpg average). An impressive result.
Value
8/10
Is the X3 a good value? Though the interior lacks the aesthetic appeal of some competitors, the quality is evident. Gaps are tight and uniform, and the switches and controls feel solid. The X3's pricing structure and feature availability line up squarely against the Audi Q5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC. A bit of an advantage comes from a few ownership perks, such as a longer period of free scheduled maintenance.
Wildcard
7.5/10
Despite being a small SUV, the X3 relays driving excitement through its steering, handling and engine sound. These attributes make it a bit more entertaining to snake up a mountain road or barrel through a freeway on-ramp than some other vehicles in the segment. The X3 has an instantly recognizable shape that looks somewhat like a miniature X5, and that's a good thing. But we're less enthusiastic about the interior, which lacks the richness found in rivals.
2024 BMW X3 trim level differences
The 2024 BMW X3 is available in three trim levels differentiated by powertrain. The sDrive30i and xDrive30i both use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (248 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque), while the M40i gets a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine (382 hp, 369 lb-ft of torque) coupled with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. An eight-speed automatic transmission drives the rear wheels on the sDrive30i, and all-wheel drive is included with the xDrive30i and M40i.
Which X3 trim does Edmunds recommend?
The X3's trim levels mainly differ by powertrain, so to choose the right one you first have to identify your specific needs. If you don't live in a climate with a real winter, we recommend the base sDrive30i. Not only is it cheaper to forgo all-wheel drive in favor of rear-wheel drive, but its standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine offers plenty of power and relatively good fuel economy. If you want a good mix of added features, opt for the Premium package to gain access to handy extras like heated front seats, hands-free keyless access, a fully digital instrument display and more.

This is my first post-Pandemic auto purchase and it has been an eye opener for sure! If you
haven't gotten a car since COVID started, be prepared to be disappointed by offerings and package deductions due to supply chain issues. For some background, I cross shopped this against a … Mercedes GLC. From reviewing various GLC window stickers where some packages were called "Lite", it was obvious that some critical components would not be included (such as the hands-free liftgate, which was a deal-breaker for me). Let me dive into the Highs/Lows with some thoughts on each after owning the car for 3 weeks.
Highs:
1) Performance - this car has a Sport mode that will make you fly like a bat out of hell if you want to! Although the default driving mode is "Comfort" every time you start the car, everybody does this for fuel economy advantage when the car is tested/reviewed to match EPA numbers. I normally drive in ECO-PRO for max fuel economy but have that Sport mode on-demand when entering a highway or for passing. I'm getting about 27 mpg on mixed driving, which is actually better than the large, heavy TLX I turned in. Did I think about upgrading to the 6-cyl M40i? Only for a split second! A fully optioned M40i is easily X5 money and I don't need the speed of the M40i nor the size of the X5. BMW makes great engines that are fuel econ friendly and perform when you need it to!
2) Cargo space - I believe it's top 2 or 3 in its luxury class. Plenty of room and allows me to put my golfbag in sideways along with a foldable push cart. The available handsfree liftgate (waving your foot) made this easy over the GLC (missing in the "Premium Package Lite").
3) Door ajar warning - if one of the doors is slightly ajar, you will get a pulsating red light on the guilty door. This is extremely handy if you have kids rushing out that may not have closed the door completely!
4) Infotainment - this is my first car with wireless CarPlay and it works really well! BMW also gives you a choice of either using the touchscreen or the physical dial located near the shifter. Some functions do require drilling down into the menus but I have no issues with this.
5) Surround Cameras - my first car with surround cameras and it makes parking a breeze! There is also the added bonus of a Remote 3D Camera feature on the MyBMW app that lets you see your car's surroundings in case you forgot where you parked or possibly as info to police if your car's been stolen.
Lows:
1) No HUD available - due to the chip shortage, the HUD is only available on the M40i for $$$. I was hoping to get one this time around but I've never had it so not as big a deal right now.
2) Audio system - the standard HiFi sound system is garbage. I easily went from one of the best (3D ELS in the TLX A-Spec) to one of the worst. I read that the Harman Kardon package isn't that much better (and why I didn't look for this package). I may end up changing out the amp and/or speakers down the road when the warranty is expired. Audiophiles may want to stay away from BMW.
3) Brake feel - after 3 weeks, I'm still trying to dial in how to brake properly in this car. As you slow down, I often find the car lurching forward for the final second. Braking under Sport mode is pretty aggressive and why I only reserve that drive mode for special situations where I need speed. This may or may not be a deal breaker for some so a test drive is highly recommended!
4) Choice of ambient lights - there are only about 6-8 color combos to choose from. Red is not an option, most likely due to it being reserved as the "door ajar" color.
5) Wireless charger - a waste of $500. Although it comes with a BMW digital key which allows you to program your phone as a key, the charger itself only keeps the phone charge neutral (don't expect rapid charging here). I ended up buying a MagSafe charger and plugging that into the USB C port located in the driver side valet box. This could be a "High" instead of a "Low" if you dislike carrying the keyfob as you could use the digital key exclusively. Digital key is included in the package because you can't activate the digital key w/o the wireless charging pad (done by a BMW Genius during car delivery).
Final thoughts:
I could have waited for the fully redesigned 2023 GLC coming next April but there is a significant price increase and I have no idea if those stupid "Lite" packages will continue. I'm not a fan of getting the first year of a new gen car anyway so that made the decision easier.
Note that BMW is still trying to sell plenty of 2022 X3s and they only have recently arrived after much delay. If you are a fan of the gesture controls, you will want a '22 model as it's not available on the '23 models. You'll also have to weigh the cheaper MSRP/sale price of a '22 vs a '23 against future resale value of the car.
One Year Update: a year later, the car runs great and not much to complain about. Fuel economy has been great and the drive still brings a smile to my face. I don't recommend long trips (3-4 hours) as the seats can be uncomfortable (YMMV as everyone's body type is different). I really wish I had adjustable side bolstering since sliding in the seat can happen on tight turns. If buying used, highly recommend the Parking Assistance Package and make sure to get Harman Kardon (I didn't and regret it!). I didn't get the Driving Assistance Package but I hear good things about it. Hope this helps!

Compare the BMW X3
BMW X3 vs. Audi Q5
The Audi Q5 checks all the right boxes in the small luxury SUV category, but sadly there isn't anything that it does particularly better than its competitors. Unlike the X3, which sets itself apart with exceptional driving dynamics, the Q5 is merely OK in the fun-to-drive department. Still, if you're looking for something comfortable and well made that comes with an impressive complement of tech features, the Q5 is a worthy choice. And to start, it's priced slightly lower than the X3.
BMW X3 vs. Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class
There's a lot to like about the Mercedes-Benz GLC. It offers powerful and efficient engines, excellent ride quality, and a stylish interior brimming with tech and convenience features. It's even more exciting to drive than the X3. But the BMW has it beat when it comes to cargo capacity and fuel economy for the four-cylinder. You'll also pay less to get in an X3 than a comparably equipped GLC.
BMW X3 vs. Genesis GV70
The Genesis GV70 is our current favorite in the small luxury SUV class. It might not be quite as luxurious as the GLC, but it's a fantastic all-arounder that should not be overlooked. Its 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system features sharp graphics and responsive touch controls, but unfortunately only supports wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, unlike the X3 which is wireless. The GV70 is also reasonably fun to drive, especially with the turbocharged V6 upgrade engine, and supremely comfortable when equipped with the available adaptive air suspension. To top it all off, the GV70 is an incredible value with its relatively low starting price and unrivaled warranty coverage.
