The 2023 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is a surprisingly good addition to the BMW lineup. Though its looks aren't for everyone, the Gran Coupe's build quality, comfortable ride and enjoyable driving dynamics cannot be faulted. We do think the base engine is a little lackluster, and with options it can get pricey quickly, but we wouldn't be surprised to see some buyers choose this version over the stalwart 3 Series.

2023 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Review
Pros
- Quick acceleration from the M440i version
- Sporty handling doesn't come at the expense of ride comfort
- Roomy cargo area
Cons
- Hard to see out of from certain angles
- Steering doesn't give you much feel for the road
What's new
- Gesture control no longer available
- Air vent accent lighting is gone
- Lumbar support now only available for the driver's seat
- Part of the second 4 Series Gran Coupe generation introduced in 2022
Overview

If a BMW 3 Series is too commonplace for you, the Bavarian brand has a similarly sized four-door for you that's a bit more distinctive: the 2023 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. The Gran Coupe is a stretched variant of the 4 Series coupe, which itself is closely related to the 3 Series. The key differences between the venerable 3 Series and the 4 Series Gran Coupe lie in the latter's rear hatch and uniquely styled — for better or worse — front end. Beauty is, of course, in the eye of the beholder, but if you like your kidney grilles large and in charge then read on.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe was redesigned in 2022, and as such the model receives only minor changes for 2023. It offers two engine choices, including a 255-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder in the 430i and a hardy 382-hp twin-turbo inline-six in the M440i xDrive. Though its exterior styling might not be for everyone, most would agree the 4 Series Gran Coupe's interior is handsome if not a little bland. The driver-centric cockpit features front seats that offer effective lateral support and a low driving position. The iDrive infotainment system is another high point, with fast load speeds and a responsive touchscreen.
The Audi A5 Sportback is the 4 Series Gran Coupe's chief rival, but the coupe-style BMW sedan also competes against more traditional luxury four-doors like its stablemate, the 3 Series, as well as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Genesis G70, Audi A4 and Lexus IS. Take a look at our test team's Expert Rating to find out where the 4 Series Gran Coupe ranks in its class.

Performance
8/10
How does the 4 Series Gran Coupe drive? The 430i is the base version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, and as such it is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 255 horsepower. The engine isn't what you'd call inspiring, and its 6.2-second run from 0 to 60 mph in our testing makes it quicker than a C-Class but slower than its little sibling, the 230i Gran Coupe. The engine revs freely and the transmission swaps gears smoothly, though, so pulling away from stops and driving at low speed is comfortable and easy.
And while all-out acceleration was just OK, braking was impressive. Summer-rated Pirelli tires helped the 430i Gran Coupe stop from 60 mph in just 104 feet. It also pulled 0.97 g on our skidpad, besting other 430i models we've tested that were shod with less sticky Michelin rubber. On the street the brake pedal can be a touch too sensitive, but all in all the 430i is well sorted and easy to drive. It's a naturally balanced, confident machine that's easy to control in corners. It just isn't as fun as we'd like, and we're going to say that hang-up is mostly due to its breathless engine. If you want fun, you'll have to opt for the more powerful M440i model.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the 4 Series Gran Coupe? Despite looking like a low-slung sport sedan, the 430i Gran Coupe is surprisingly comfortable. Our test car's optional adaptive dampers made the 4 Series comfortable in all drive modes, especially Comfort mode. That addresses one of our main gripes with this car's sedan sibling, the 3 Series: its harsh ride. That the Gran Coupe delivers more comfort is a welcome surprise that we think elevates it over the sedan.
Other than the ride, the 430i is quiet and does a commendable job of insulating passengers from the outside world. Big wheels and summer tires do allow road noise to make its way into the cabin, but it's nowhere near unbearable. That said, the 430i's seats could be more comfortable. The padding was firm, suggesting the seats will require a lengthy break-in period before they become truly comfortable. Plus, these seats were manually adjustable, and we think some basic luxuries, like power seats, should be standard equipment at this price point. It's worth noting BMW's dedicated screen for climate control information means there's no digging through menus to change the temperature, and that's something we really appreciate about BMWs at the moment.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? BMW's interiors are getting a bit stale, with many of their models looking exactly like one another. From behind the wheel, it's difficult to tell a 2 Series from a 4 Series. That said, the 430i is a pleasant place to spend a lot of time. The physical controls are well laid out and most are easy to use without taking your eyes off the road. The center console is loaded with varying quality of plastics, however, and we wish things like the shortcut panel in the middle and the knob that rises above it were of a slightly higher quality.
The driving position, as you might expect from a sport sedan, is great. You sit low down in the car and the seats, while firm, are supportive. Even the back seats, which passengers might expect to be cramped, are roomy enough. A 6-foot-tall passenger can sit behind a 6-foot-tall driver and still have knee room to spare, a nice touch in this low-slung four-door. The biggest gripe we have with the 4 Series Gran Coupe is its coupe-like visibility. The side mirror blocks much of the view out of the driver's side window, and the car's blind spots are large. If you're interested in one of these, you're going to have to be careful with it until you're wholly familiar with its dimensions.

Technology
7.5/10
How’s the tech? While iDrive represents one of the steepest learning curves in the industry, it's an effective system once you wrap your head around it. BMW's voice recognition is intuitive, and it readily understands natural speech. However, BMW is pretty stingy about equipping the 4 Series with standard driver aids. Features such as adaptive cruise control and lane keeping are optional. Our test car also lacked the upgraded upgraded Harman Kardon audio system, though the standard audio system is strong enough that it wasn't a huge loss.
Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The Gran Coupe features a huge liftback instead of a typical trunk, so there is a ton of cargo space in this car. There is 16.6 cubic feet of space in the rear cargo area, almost 4 cubic feet more than in the current 3 Series. The liftgate opens wide, so the opening itself is akin to a giant mouth, swallowing everything in its path. It's far easier than packing a trunk.
Storage for small items is less impressive. There are the requisite cupholders in the center console, though they can't fit larger bottles. The door pockets are quite small owing to this car's coupe origins. The glovebox and armrest storage are also smaller than we'd like. Thankfully for parents, the 430i Gran Coupe does come with easily accessible Isofix latches, though a small rear door opening might make installing a car seat a pain.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? We tested the 430i, which gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That's respectably fuel-efficient for a small luxury sedan. On our standardized test route, the 4 Series Gran Coupe just beat the EPA's estimate, giving us 28.9 mpg.
Value
7.5/10
Is the 4 Series Gran Coupe a good value? The 4 Series Gran Coupe can get pricey but its mix of practicality, everyday comfort, and excellent build quality almost justifies its price. It's better to drive than the standard 3 Series and offers more storage space that makes it an even better daily commuter. We still fault BMW for not making more advanced driver assist systems standard, and the lack of those high-tech features at this price is borderline egregious. Keep that in mind if you're eyeing a 4 Series Gran Coupe because it may affect your decision.
BMW's warranty on the 4 Series Gran Coupe is solid, with standard and drivetrain warranties stretching for four years/50,000 miles. It also offers three years/36,000 miles of free maintenance and unlimited roadside assistance for four years.

Wildcard
8/10
The 4 Series is either extremely interesting or awful to look at depending on your personal tastes. That said, there's little doubt this BMW presents a distinct form on today’s roads. Taste is subjective, but the 4 Series is certainly different, and BMW should get credit for that.
We wish the 4 Series Gran Coupe was more engaging to drive, though. The prospect of a full-fledged M version is a pipe dream, so those seeking fun-to-drive thrills in this body style really need to consider the more powerful M440i model. That said, 430i owners won't feel snubbed, and the 4 Series is certainly more fun than the regular 330i sedan.

2023 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe trim level differences
The 2023 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is a four-door hatchback with a coupe-like swept roofline. This distinguishes it from the traditionally styled 3 Series sedan, as well as the 4 Series coupe and convertible. The Gran Coupe is available in two trim levels: 430i and M440i xDrive.
Which 4 Series Gran Coupe trim does Edmunds recommend?
We definitely see the appeal of the more powerful M440i xDrive, but that model's extra ponies and grabbier brakes come at a hefty price premium. The 430i will be sporty enough for most drivers and it comes well equipped in base form. For more luxury and convenience features, choose the Premium package for front and rear heated seats, a head-up display and wireless phone charging.

2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe 430i 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
I took delivery on my 2022 Gran Coupe yesterday. First of all, this is a very difficult car to find. There is basically nothing in stock and most cars coming in are spoken for before they get to the dealer. I was fortunate to find one that arrived at the dealer that wasn’t pre-sold. I love this car. The new BMW technology is very intuitive and much better than the former system. The … double LCD screens with the totally electronic gauges is a game changer. The infotainment screens are easily accessible and simple to figure out. The acceleration on this car is excellent. It is QUICK. I was very impressed with the acceleration and handling in the Comfort mode. The ride is quiet, great feel for the road, comfortable and responsive. Standard blind spot monitor, back-up camera and parking assist technology is wonderful. The basic car comes loaded with a laundry list of standard features. There are some excellent options to choose from to customize this car to your needs and desires. The exterior styling of this car is stunning as is the interior. The ambient lighting and cabin layout is comfortable and functional plus luxurious. The hatchback provides a spacious cargo area with rear seats that completely fold down for extra space. What a great feature. I believe that the MSRP pricing on this car is very reasonable for the value. The twin turbo 4 cylinder engine is quite impressive. If you want a luxurious sports car with some added cargo space, this 2022 Gran Coupe will impress you.

So, not everybody likes the front grille... now that that is out of the way...
This car is PHENOMENAL!!! It is the perfect balance of sport and luxury. It is incredibly fun on a twisty mountain road, but it is equally at home on a long highway trip. I have never had a car that I could get in it, drive for hours, and not want to stop. The engineering wizards at BMW have somehow found a … way to make this car crazy fast, crazy fun, and very comfortable all rolled into one package. Also, did I mention it gets good fuel economy? 75 MPH on the highway will net you an average 35 MPG on a car with nearly 400 horsepower. Engineering. Wizards.
BMW, you have perfected the sport touring car. Keep doing it.
Fast, luxurious and comfortable

2023 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe M440i xDrive 4dr Sedan AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
Tons of power but efficient, comfortable and sporty. The grille has been mentioned a lot. Personally I like it. The car is about 190 inches long to begin with. I receive a lot of positive comments. Quality of materials and build quality is a big positive. The Germans really know how to build vehicles. The inline 6 turbo and 8 speed ZF transmission is one of the smoothest … drivetrains out there. 32-35mpg cruising at 70-80mph. We carried a folding table and 4 plastic chairs for 250 mile trip once.
Bravo, BMW

2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe M440i xDrive 4dr Sedan AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
My fourth BMW, including two SUV's and one sedan, and the best thus far The M440 version I have is a pleasure: eye catching, unique design that looks like nothing else on the road. Classic BMW handling, braking, seating, etc. This car gets up and moves: put it in Sport Plus, hit the paddles, and hang on [while keeping an eye in the rear view mirror....] Makes a drive to the grocery … store or three hours on the interstate equally a pleasure. Highly recommended: well done, Munich!
