What Is It?

What's Special About It?
This is just a refresh, so it wasn't a chance to give the 2014 Hyundai Equus a big style makeover or a new chassis or anything else of serious significance/cost. Instead, Hyundai attacked the Equus with a scalpel, nipping and tucking the exterior ever so slightly while adding a few new features inside the cabin.

At Hyundai's press conference, CEO John Krafcik told the crowd, "We didn't even bother covering it with a sheet, since you can barely see the changes anyway." So even Hyundai concedes that the new headlights, taillights and 19-inch turbine wheels are subtle updates at best.

But as Krafcik pointed out later, it was the cabin that received most of the attention. You can easily see the larger navigation screen, the optional tan leather with dark piping and the dual monitors for the passengers in back. What you can't see is that almost all of the features in the Equus now come standard. The only option now is whether to upgrade to the Ultimate package, which adds the dual monitors, cooled seats with adjustable lumbar support and other such nice-to-have features that one can easily do without.

The only other major upgrade of note for the 2014 Hyundai Equus is a retuned suspension. "We didn't feel like there was enough of a difference between the settings originally, but now you can definitely tell how much they affect the standard air suspension," said Mike O'Brien, Hyundai's vice president of product planning. Some new front bushings and a few tweaks to both the airbags and the software that controls them were enough to get the changes they wanted, according to O'Brien.

What Edmunds Says:
A modest upgrade for a modest sedan. Hyundai seems content on taking it slow with the Equus, and given all the other movement in its lineup, there's no reason to move the Equus along any faster.
