Overview
The Model Y is the most important vehicle in Tesla’s lineup and a sales success since it first launched. For 2026 we expect Tesla to finally make long-awaited updates to the Model Y, most of which will be carried over from the recently updated Model 3 sedan. Expect a new exterior design and improved ride quality from a revised suspension setup. Inside the cabin, the Model Y should get ambient lighting and a passenger screen in the rear, among other small touches.
Edmunds spotlight: Better quality
Edmunds has owned several Teslas — beginning with the first iteration of the Model S — and we’ve noticed a step up in build quality over time. This is very much true of the new Model 3 that we purchased, so we expect to see the same thing with the updated Model Y. Build quality is not something that everyone considers in a new car purchase, but it can make all the difference over the ownership experience.
Competitors to consider
The Tesla Model Y has a huge list of competitors to pick from, so be sure to check current incentives and lease deals before making a purchase. Two of our favorites are the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Compared to the Model Y, Hyundai's Ioniq 5 offers better driving dynamics, while the Ford has excellent passenger space and superior hands-free driving technology.
