As a XC90 owner who has experienced the loss and replacement of one of these transmissions, I offer the following: The dealers response certainly does sound "fishey" but you have left out some important details that need to be considered in your situation. For example, who replaced the transmission the first two times. If in either case it was not Volvo, I doubt that you have a claim against them. It ... Read More
this is true my wife just bought an 05 xc90 with 83000 miles two weeks later the transmission service urgent light came on. I have a 2004 XC 90 T-6. The original tires are Michelin MXV4 (i think that's right) Pilots. these tires are terrible. wore out very fast. The volvo is heavy and is AWD which makes them wear out even faster. I do mostly city driving too. I recently bought Michelin Primacy and like the way they fell so far. I have about 6K miles on them and no sign of wear ... Read More
I realize I'm replying to an old post but... My XC90 wore out tires quickly too. The dealer replaced the first set for free. After talking to people I found out the dealer provided the CHEAPEST tires available. I went to Sears and bucked up for the tires meant for heavy vehicles and rated to last 60,000 miles or something like that. Anyway, tire issue was never an issue again. Avoid ... Read More
RE: 2005 XC90 T6 with 73,200 miles. I have just been told my failed transmission was a result of a faulty radiator which allowed water to get into the system. I am told this is a known radiator defect and Volvo will not assist in any way. Are there any class action suites addressing this issue? Oh, by the way, my Engine Control Module also needs to be replaced. I have ... Read More
I have a 2005 XC90 T6 with 80,000miles. My "Transmission Service Urgent" light went on 4 days ago just as I was about to get on the expressway with my wife and 4 kids in the car. My 2005 XC90 T6 has had the same issues with the transmission at 90k miles. It broke down on my family and I while driving home from our Thanksgiving travels. Just this past weekend (not 6 weeks later) we got the "Transmission Service Urgent" msg again and took ... Read More

Sorry to hear the news, 'Thankful 5' (about your transmission), but great to learn that Volvo Canada will help you with this. Thank you for sharing this. I bought my wife a 2004 T6 about 3 years ago. Our transmission went at 140,000 kms (about 86,000 miles), very similar to the timing of so many other posters in this forum. We were gutted as this is the car the family uses to drive the kids around, thinking it was the safest car on the road. But paying thousands for a new transmission is ... Read More
I too have a cracked engine in my 2005 volvo CX90 after 83,000 miles. With it being 9 months out of warrenty, are there any suggestions on how I can get Volvo to at least partially help. It seems to be an issue with this vehicle
I have a 2005 XC90 T6 and my transmission broke down for the second time at 87000 miles, this time my volvo dealer has agreed to replace my transmission for free (parts and labor) out of good will... since it has less than 100,000 miles, and a 2 year warranty with unlimited mileage. The new transmission is different than the old one, it's louder with less pick up power. I guess ... Read More
Great to hear they were so kind and you were offered the parts and 1/2 labour. It really depends on the "dealership" for a deal on labour! Well mate, I don't know who you are, but thank you for your kind advice. I did call Volvo North America. Not surprisingly, they were very kind, and very helpful. Thanks mate [on the 'Volvo-pays-for-the-replacement-parts' idea]; I'll network with Volvo/NA first thing Monday morning and see if they'll help. If successful, I'll advise here accordingly. All the best ~
Why are you paying $4500. This is a patent DEFECT and this transmission should not need replacing anywhere near 100K or miles. This is not some CHEAP SUV...it retailed around 60K originally back in 2004-2005. This should be covered by Volvo of North America especially since it is under 1ooKmiles. Even now when you go to sell it it has depreciated so much you'd be lucky to get 10k in the ... Read More
Thanks for your post; it's comforting to know we're not all imagining things. My 2005 Volvo XC90's transmission began malfunctioning this week by not going into 3rd gear. Whilst driving at about 25mph the other night, I then heard / ... Read More
Hello there. I desperately need some advise. I own a 2005 Volvo XC90 purchased in 2009 in NJ. It wasn't bought from a Volvo dealership so I don't know if I am covered in anything. I own a 2006 2.5T xc90 with 70,000 miles, and it has been a great car. The 2.5T and all other volvo 5 cylinder engines have a great reputation for reliability and longevity. I bought a used 04' xc90 t6 about a year ago, and I think my transmission is about to fail. I am slipping while in 3rd gear. Will volvo help pay to repair even if i bought used?
Personally, I would invest in something other than a Volvo XC90 as the maintenance costs are enormous on these cars. I am not familiar with the XC90 V8 maintenance records; however, my 2005 XC90 T6 transmission has been replaced twice, new tires replaced every year, and etc. are just a few repairs that are normal repairs for the vehicle.

This would "square" with my understanding that Volvo redesigned the transmission for 2006 which corrected the earlier years inherent weaknesses. Hello All, There is no reason to join a class action law suit for 2003 - 2005 XC90 T6 Transmissions. Volvo will cover these 100% up to 100,000 miles! This is more than generous! What more can Volvo do? They have admitted to the problem and they will stand behind their product! Stop thinking that Volvo owns your vehicle forever! It's time to take possession of your vehicle. Your retailer is ... Read More
Correction, the Volvo XC90 is a 2005. Outstanding news. Volvo had the case opened for 5 days in which they worked with the local Volvo Dealership. Volvo called back on Tuesday and stated they would pay 50% of parts and labor with me picking up the remaining 50%. I called back and stated I was aware of the ongoing issue and asked how they reached the decision to only pay 50% ... Read More
For those of you looking for some recourse regarding the dysfunctional transmissions recurrently put in the 2003-2005 Volvo XC90s - see this website to join the class action lawsuit. Volvo knew the problem existed very early and continued to replace transmissions with rebuilt and faulty transmissions that had to be replaced again - If you are like us, we have spent thousands and tons of time while receiving horrible service. Jeremy, I am sorry to hear that you have joined the club. Volvo has sworn over-and-over that the transmission problem was limited to the 2003 through 2005 models. They send they re-designed them and stopped getting them from GM in 2005. I guess not, now that the 2006's are getting up in years and mileage. Good luck with Volvo Cars of North America, we have one of the first 2003 XC90s ... Read More
I just got my 05 xc90 back last week after being in the volvo repair for almost 2 weeks. It has less than 42000 miles on it. Transmission was leaking and also got into the axel. Had to have both the transmission and the axel replaced. Repairman made it sound like this is something unusual. Luckily, I have an extended warranty and all but $200 was covered BUT ALL is not ... I forgot to mention...Volvo not only covered the cost for replacing the transmission, but also the front axle, radiator and all lines. There is no warranty other than a standard 90 day issued with the repair, which originally caused me concern given the fact that I thought the transmission was faulty (meaning it would go again in another 50-75K miles). However, the service manager told me the root cause (as determined ... Read More
Last week I got the dreaded "Urgent Transmission Service" message and my trans felt like it was stuck in one gear. I bought the car used a few months ago..has 70K on it. I was shocked at the high prevalence of this issue as I read through everyone's posts, however I also found valuable information. When I took the car to the Volvo dealership the next day, I awaited the diagnosis ... Read More

Hi,I have a VOLVO 2005 XC90, I want to change the POLLEN FILTER, I do not know location end and how to open.......Does anyone know how to do... Thanks ;)
The engine was replaced recently with a used V8 with 53,000 miles. It was not replaced at 20,000 miles with a new engine. I believe it was replaced because of an oil leak that drained the engine & blew it. I wouldn't consider buying it were it not for the fact that the engine was replaced by a friend who works at the dealership. He knows Volvo's well and I trust ... Read More
I'm looking at a '05 V8. The chassis has 73k miles on it and it's got a replaced Yamaha V8 in it with 53k miles. Also, new tires, brake pads, tie rods. It's from a Volvo dealership which will certify it to 100,000 miles with the Volvo totalcare warranty. It's AWD with 7 passenger, heated seats. Everything except nav and dvd. Dealership is offering it at $17,900. Any thoughts? Also looking ... Read More
We have a 2005 XC90 V8 with Volvo Navigation system. We have updated the maps every year. In the last few months the system just looses where we are and sometimes it will relocate us on the GPS but other times we have to shut the sytem down and it may not re-locate our position for a day or two (which is frustrating when travelling!). We also purchased a Garmin to ... Read More
