Multiple problems with coils in engine

2004 Mazda MPV ES 4dr Minivan (3.0L 6cyl 5A)


Bought the vehicle used in 2008 with about 40,000 miles. Loved it at first, rode smoothly, feels like a car, looks great for a minivan and love that the sliding door windows roll down. Fast forward to about 75,000 miles. The first engine coil goes. 90,000 two more blow. Now at 101,000 miles, the 4th coil is being replaced tomorrow. There is a design defect in the coil placement in this MPV that allows water to enter the coils, and shorten the live considerably. Some other little things here and there, but the engine is the big issue. Trading it in for a more reliable vehicle right after the repair is done.

Suggested Improvements

Factory recall for defective design of engine coils. This should not be an expense owners should bear.

Agree with Lorf. Mine has a mere 58K miles and have replaced at least five coils (I lost count!) this year in addition to enduring some transmission issues--mainly needed a reflash but only the dealer could do it and the cost was unbelievable. Too bad because it was the perfect city/country minivan until the coils started self-destructing. Probably warrants a class action but who has the time for such things.

Same problems here as well as master controller for power door on passenger side. Dealer troubleshot several times and still couldn't find the problem until last week. Getting it fixed this week and trading it in. It's not old enough for all these problems. Also have had some issues with the brakes. 2 years ago had it in for brake inspection because it was making grinding sounds. They said it was just road noise. We were getting ready to go on a trip. Drove it to the inn just fine, it spent the whole weekend parked. When we got in it Sunday to go home it was even worse. Took it in first thing Monday morning and the brakes and rotors were completely trashed. I have a hard time believing they really did a brake inspection. Then, last year had brake issues again. Servicing at the dealer stinks and so do all these repairs. Plus, it handles terrible in snow (and even hills when it's rained hard) and I never got the gas mileage out of it that I should have been able to. Trading it in for an suv, which also isn't great on gas mileage but I should be able to get where I need to go when the weather's bad.
