TOKYO — Total global sales of the Toyota Prius reached a cumulative 3 million units at the end of June, making the Japanese compact far and away the world's most popular hybrid vehicle.

Introduced in Japan in 1997, the Prius family is now in its third generation and includes a variety of models, including the standard Prius hatchback, the Prius Plug-In, the entry-level Prius C (sold as the Toyota Aqua in Japan) and the family-focused Prius V (called Prius+ in Europe).

Hybrid gasoline/electric technology first developed for the Prius now has spread across the Toyota range and into the company's upscale Lexus lineup.

Edmunds says: A remarkable track record for the pioneering hybrid.
