NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, England — Development team Polyphony Digital and publisher Sony have announced that the next installment of the Gran Turismo racing simulator, Gran Turismo 6, will be available in time for the holidays this year.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced plans for the game at a celebration of the 15th anniversary of the self-proclaimed "real driving simulator" yesterday at the United Kingdom's Silverstone Circuit.
The company said that Gran Turismo 6 will be released for the PlayStation 3 and is multi-device compatible — meaning there will be special Web and mobile versions offered, too.
GT6 will have 1,200 cars at the time of the launch, which is about 100 more than the final garage available in its predecessor. A few cars new to this game will be the 2011 Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale, 1971 Ferrari Dino 246 GT, 2012 KTM X-Bow R, 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3, 1968 Alpine A110 1600S and a 2012 Tesla Motors Model S Signature Performance.
Silverstone Circuit will be featured in the game and is one of seven new racing locations, making a grand total of 33 tracks and 71 layouts. There will be downloadable content (DLC) available after the release that will increase the track and car count.
The game features a new physics engine with realistic tire and suspension kinematic modeling developed with help from partners Yokohama Rubber and KW Automotive. Sony also improved the course maker, loading times, social and community features as well as the variety of performance modifications that are available for each vehicle.
The Gran Turismo series has sold over 70 million units in 15 years.
Edmunds says: Although Sony says Gran Turismo 6 will come out this holiday, Gran Turismo 5 took five years to develop and even had its hard release date delayed at the last minute. We will cross our fingers that the sixth installment of this epic driving simulator makes it on shelves by the end of 2013.
