DEARBORN, Michigan — The Ford C-Max Solar Energy Concept, which draws its power from the sun, will debut at the 2014 International CES.

The concept is estimated to have the same range as a 2014 Ford C-Max Energi of up to 620 miles. Ford and Georgia Tech will begin testing the vehicle in "numerous real-world scenarios" to determine if the concept is feasible as a production car, the automaker said.

The concept is equipped with a solar panel roof that draws power from a special solar concentrator lens similar to a magnifying glass. The patent-pending system tracks the sun, drawing enough power through the concentrator each day to equal a four-hour battery charge.

As a backup, the concept still has a charge port and can be recharged via the grid.

"The result is a concept vehicle that takes a day's worth of sunlight to deliver the same performance as the conventional C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid, which draws its power from the electric grid," Ford said.

Internal Ford data says the sun could power up to 75 percent of all trips made by an average driver in a solar hybrid vehicle.

The Ford C-Max Solar Energy Concept will be on display at the 2014 International CES in Las Vegas January 7-10.

Edmunds says: If the Ford C-Max Solar Energy Concept becomes reality, it will be good news for car shoppers in places where the electric grid is unreliable or expensive to use.
