DETROIT — Detroit Electric, formerly an electric vehicle maker in the early 1900s, is teasing its postmodern sports car, which will debut at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show.

A single image of the pure-electric two-seater shows a dramatically sculpted front end, LED headlights, side mirrors mounted on struts and an unusual roof line. Pricing and launch date are not set, a Detroit Electric spokeswoman told Edmunds on Tuesday.

"It will be available here in the U.S., but I don't have any details about the car itself," said Yvonne Malmgren, a Detroit Electric spokeswoman, in a phone conversation.

The car will be assembled in Michigan, with production set for August, the company said in a statement. The production facility will have an annual capacity of 2,500 sports cars.

Malmgren would not confirm whether the car will use a body built by Malaysia's Proton, as had been reported four years ago when Detroit Electric first resurfaced after a long absence. At the time, the Detroit Electric was expected to be priced at around $25,000.

Detroit Electric's statement said the new Detroit Electric "will spearhead a diverse family of all-electric production cars, including two other high-performance models that will enter production by end of 2014."

A media event will be held in Detroit on April 3 to reveal more details about the Detroit Electric sports car ahead of its global unveiling. Detroit Electric said it will announce a "major partnership with a global carmaker" next month.

The Detroit Electric brand was revived in 2008 by Albert Lam, former Group CEO of the Lotus Engineering Group and executive director of Lotus Cars of England.

Edmunds says: An electric car start-up with deep Motor City roots is angling to grab some of the global spotlight.
