HOLLYWOOD, California — Sunday's American SpeedFest at Brands Hatch Circuit in England, a tribute to and celebration of the U.S. automotive and auto racing culture, will also have an American driver, Kevin O'Connell, who will become the first U.S. driver to race in the Euro Racecar NASCAR Touring Series on a road course.
O'Connell, of Newport Beach, California, is a veteran of stock and sports car racing with experience in the NASCAR K&N Touring Series, Grand Am Road Racing and other venues.
"We have a new venture business partner with an international ambition that will be marketing with us in North America and Europe this year and we wanted to find a unique series of racing events to compete in," O'Connell said. "The developing NASCAR series in Europe was an easy choice for us and I look forward to announcing our partner later this week."
Euro Racecar NASCAR became an officially sanctioned touring series of the Daytona Beach, Florida-based stock car racing organization prior to the 2012 season. The series was created in 2009 by Team FJ Group, with support from the French Federation (FFSA) and its president, Nicolas Deschaux.
The series features NASCAR-inspired racecars with bodies resembling popular U.S. models such as the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang. The cars have tubular steel chassis and are powered by American V8 engines.
The series will be a headline attraction at the Brands Hatch event, with the fifth and sixth rounds of its 2013 schedule slated for Saturday and Sunday.
Spanish driver Ander Vilarino, who drove his Camaro-bodied TFT Banco Santander machine to last year's inaugural championship title, has won all four rounds contested this season, including the first two at Circuit Paul Armagnac at Nogaro, France, and the next two at Circuit Dijon-Prenois.
Activities at the legendary Brands Hatch circuit will range from showcars of NASCAR stars Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne to replicas of iconic American cars such as the Starsky and Hutch Ford Torino, the Dukes of Hazzard General Lee Dodge Charger and the Knight Rider Pontiac Firebird.
Edmunds says: The Euro Racecar NASCAR Touring Series is heralded as a "Road to the USA Driver Training Program," but in this instance an American driver will be utilizing it.
