WOODCLIFF LAKE, New Jersey — The redesigned 2015 BMW X6, the German automaker's blend of an SUV and a coupe, will arrive in U.S. showrooms in late 2014 with some major changes in store for consumers.
Pricing will be announced closer to launch.
It is expected that the lineup may start under $60,000, due to the addition of a new base rear-wheel-drive model, the 2015 BMW X6 sDrive35i. The base 2014 X6 with all-wheel drive starts at $61,725, including a $925 destination charge.
All 2015 X6s are equipped with an eight-speed Steptronic sport automatic transmission. The vehicle also gets what BMW calls a "more extroverted design," while retaining its trademark long hood, short front overhang and large wheel arches. A power glass sunroof is standard.
New exterior color choices include Dark Olive and Flamenco Red Metallic. Options include aluminum running boards and adaptive LED headlights. All models feature standard 19-inch light-alloy wheels, while 20-inch alloy wheels are optional.
A greater emphasis has been placed on functionality in the 2015 X6. The rear seat backrests can now be split-folded 40/20/40. The power tailgate can now be opened and closed via remote control and from the driver seat.
For the 2015 X6 xDrive50i M Sport, BMW adds aerodynamic touches, including large front air intakes, side skirts, a diffuser insert for the rear apron and a custom kidney grille design with bars in matte aluminum.
The 2015 BMW X6 sDrive35i and X6 xDrive35i are equipped with the 300-horsepower 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine.
The V8-powered X6 xDrive50i gets improved performance for the new model year. The 4.4-liter V8 engine churns out 445 hp, a boost of 50 hp.
BMW said EPA mileage estimates on the 2015 X6 will be available closer to launch.
A wide range of driver assistance systems is available on the X6. They include a Driver Assistance Plus package with speed limit info, which shows the speed limit for the road in the instrument cluster.
Edmunds says: Car shoppers who don't have to battle winter weather will be happy with the addition of the new rear-wheel-drive X6 sDrive35i.
